Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/30/24

If I asked you right now, who ends up signing Bellinger: Cubs or the field?
Steve Adams
2:04
I'll still almost always take the field unless you're talking something like ... Kershaw: Dodgers or the field?

Woodruff or Ryu makes a ton of sense to sign with Baltimore, true?
Steve Adams
2:06
Woodruff doesn't do much to help them this year, but yeah, the payroll is squeaky clean long-term and he'd be huge for them in 2025. Ryu would be a fine depth piece but doesn't move the needle much for me. He was a pure five-inning guy down the stretch. I think it'd be fine to sign him, but if that's all they do to the rotation this offseason, that's a huge letdown for O's fans.

Will I be an everyday 1B or a DH platoon with Morel?
Steve Adams
2:06
They're going to get him in the lineup regularly between 1B and DH

Why aren’t my clients signing?
I just want to go on a vacation already and
Steve Adams
2:09
He's gotten deals for Kenta Maeda, Nick Martinez, Erick Fedde, Nick Senzel, Austin Hedges, Jung Hoo Lee, Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea, James Paxton, Rhys Hoskins, Joey Gallo and Matt Moore this offseason
His clients are signing  -- just not the ones you probably want to sign right now haha

Given the Padres lack of movement on even the cheaper FA front, can we extrapolate that Jackson Merrill is likely to make the team out of Spring Training, assuming he doesn't look terribly overmatched?
Steve Adams
2:11
I wouldn't read too much yet. There's going to be a lot of guys signing cheap one-year deals before long. Padres will be candidates to sign some of them.

Merrill is 20 and has 46 games above A-ball -- all in Double-A. Not saying it's 0% he makes the roster, but it's also hardly fair to call that a done deal

But what about my big name clients? Aren’t fans tired of waiting so long?
Steve Adams
2:12
He doesn't work for the fans, he works for the guys he's trying to get nine-figure contracts for. Why would any player agent be influenced by the patience level of fans?

Why wouldn't the Cards take a 2 year chance on Woodruff
Mets fan
2:12
Doesn't Woodruff on a 2 year deal make sense for the Mets?
Steve Adams
2:12
I've gotten one of these for like 10 teams now ha
And the answer to all of them is ... yeah
2:13
Woodruff for two years makes sense for any team
He'll probably sign two years and something like $25-30MM and do so with a team that has a chance to contend and that he feels can help him rehab and get back to form.
