Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/7/25

Yeah he might have to if the five-year deal he wants isn't there. Of course, we've seen (somewhat smaller-scale) five-year deals with opt outs. Eduardo Rodriguez had an opt-out two years into his $77MM deal in Detroit. Could end up going with a version of that deal, though I'd expect higher than $77MM in a five-year scenario.

I still think someone should just give him five years, but I understand the trepidation. Lot of injuries there despite not being 30 yet.

What would Stroman get as a FA today? 3/36? And, could you see a team coming to that type of arrangement with Stroman as part of a trade?
Steve Adams
12:43
He'll be 34 in May. I don't think he'd get 3/36. He was only guaranteed $37MM last offseason when he was younger and coming off a much better season.

I'd probably put him as a one-year guy in the Cobb/Morton range ($15MM). Maybe some team would do a 2/25 on him.
12:44
If you're asking whether Stroman would agree to a 3/36 extension after a trade, no. He's making $18MM this season, so he's already guaranteed half that. And if he pitches 140 innings, he picks up an $18MM player option. As long as he tosses 140 frames this year, he's already locked in at 2/36.

Can I breakout in GABP?
Steve Adams
12:47
I've always like Lux more than Dodgers fans seem to. I'm not as high on him as I was three years ago or so, obviously, but he still makes good swing decisions, makes good in-zone contact, hits a ton of line drives. Would be nice to see him trim the GB% by a few points in favor of some more balls in the air, but I think Lux will benefit nicely from the move to Great American, yes.

What happens to Arenado?
Steve Adams
12:48
Longer it drags on, the more I just think he'll open the season in St. Louis.

Who says no, Bo Bichette for Bobby Miller and Dalton Rushing

Can the Tigers get Mason Miller for Jung,Tork, or Mize?
Steve Adams
12:49
If they could, they would've by now.

Will the Dodgers pick up more international bonus pool money that they can use to get Roki Sasaki?
Steve Adams
12:50
I don't really think the decision for Sasaki is going to be made based on one team being able to offer like $7MM and another club being capped at $5.5MM.
12:51
Joel Wolfe (his agent) told a huge group of us in Dallas that his advice to Sasaki is going to be not to make a decision of this magnitude based on short-term earnings, as the money he'll make in his career will come down the line. The priority should be where he's comfortable and who'll help him develop.

Can we afford Grichuk as a platoon bat, or is he going to receive a multi-year deal this winter? Canha is an okay backup plan but Grichuk still really crushes lefties and adds more defensive value.
Steve Adams
12:53
I don't see why they couldn't. He's a nice fit there, though signing him would effectively push Johan Rojas to the minors and make for some suspect late-inning defense at times.

Could Castillo plus a low level arm get Westburg?
Steve Adams
12:54
If there was any scenario where Luis Castillo could get Jordan Westburg to Seattle, Jerry Dipoto would've been all over that awhile ago.

I believe the Jays are bucking for a rebuild.  What say you?
Steve Adams
12:55
I think they probably should've started it at the 2024 deadline. But I'm not running baseball operations there.

Think I can get Verdugo for a year under 10 mil?
Steve Adams

I do

Where are you AA
12:56
To me, Braves window is slowly closing.  Would love to see AA get aggressive.  Not gonna happen, but would love for us to sign Santander.  Get rid of Kelenic and once Acuna comes back, roll with an OF of Santander, Harris & Ronald.  Lineup would be stacked too - Acuna, Albies, Riley, Olson, Santander, Ozuna, Harris, Murphy, and Arcia.   I’d also see if we could swing a deal with SD to get Cease in Atlanta.  Sale, Strider, Cease, Lopez and Schwelly - now that’s a rotation.  Come on, AA.  Wake up!
Steve Adams
12:59
I'm sure a lot of Braves fans would love that, but that's not how Anthopoulos has operated even when he has money to spend. He's never topped Ozuna's $65MM for a free agent. He's not going to sign Santander, and he typically hasn't swung major trades for stars with one year of club control remaining. It's always at least two years of control and guys who'll likely be amenable to extension talks (e.g. Matt Olson, Sean Murphy). Cease is a Boras-represented No. 1-2 starter who's nine healthy months away from $175MM+ in free agency.

Give me some hope as a Twins fan for this season.
Steve Adams

The AL Central is bad -- not as bad as it used to be, granted -- and the Twins have a talented rotation with a bunch of good young hitters. Keeping Buxton healthy for a full season's not happening, but if they can get more games out of Buxton/Lewis/Correa and get some strides from Brooks Lee, they could still contend without doing much.

Doesn't excuse ownership's complete 180 on spending (and on, you know, actually wanting to own a baseball team) -- but there's a decent core in place as is, and they're not exactly playing in the NL West or AL East.

Is there a scenario that’s reasonable on the Reds getting Luis Robert?
Steve Adams
1:03
I don't think the Reds have the appetite to spend anywhere near the $15MM Robert is owed in 2025, at this point.
