Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/9/24

Mr. Lucky

There's been some debate about Ha-Seong Kim's value versus Kyle Harrison's. With the mutual option looming for Kim and 6 years of control for Harrison, isn't Harrison's trade value much more? Thanks Steve.
Steve Adams
1:15
I haven't seen this debate anywhere. It seems silly. Kim's going to decline his mutual option next winter and become a free agent. Harrison has six years of team control and is still very well regarded. Harrison has more trade value.

seems like everyone in MLB is backing away from me.  why?  what are my options?
Steve Adams
1:16
I don't read the current reporting as anyone backing away. I read it as teams submitting competing bids and being pushed to the fringes of their comfort levels with the player, which is the case at the end of any free agent negotiation. Free agency is an auction, plain and simple.

Garrett Cooper seems like a good fit for guardians based on position versatility, production and price?
Steve Adams
1:17
Sure. I think Cooper's an underrated bat in general, though he had a down year in 2023. He probably signs a one-year deal for like $4-5MM -- seems feasible for Cleveland (or a lot of other teams)

Do you think the longer Bellinger waits to sign, the better the odds he stays with the Cubs?
Steve Adams
1:17
I do, if only because it increases the chances of him taking something like a super-high AAV, three-year deal with multiple opt-outs.
1:18
I don't think the Cubs will go long-term to keep Bellinger
Royal dilemma
1:18
For Salvy’s advanced age and health, do my Royals really put him behind the plate as the full time catcher or put him at DH for a good chunk and let Freddy Fermin take the majority behind the plate?
Steve Adams
1:18
Perez shouldn't be catching regularly anymore. He's been declining back there for awhile. Fermin should catch more than he does, with Sal getting time at DH and first base.
Blake Snell
1:19
Why do I look so much like Sid from Ice Age?
Steve Adams
1:19
I will never un-see this.

i just saw an article where Baltimore is a “likely” destination for Snell?  Do you see Baltimore spending the money needed to sign him or any other pitching free agents?
Steve Adams
1:21
I assume you mean Will Leitch's article at MLB.com. Seems like it's just his speculation of the best fits for Snell. He's not citing sources or anything. He has the O's 10th on the list and specifically calls out how they haven't shown a willingness to spend like this.
I'd be stunned if he signed in Baltimore.

Could you see Cody Bellinger being a padre, or will he resign with the cubs?
Steve Adams
1:21
I never say never on anything when it comes to the Padres and Preller.

1:22
Do you think the Reds are a candidate to trade for Harold Ramirez?  He mashes lefties and they could use that for their outfield. Is he a terrible fielder?
Steve Adams
1:22
He is not a good defender, no. I don't think he's a great fit for the roster there.
Julio Urias
1:22
Will I pitch in the majors this year? Will I ever again?
Steve Adams
1:23
Doubt it on both cases.
1:24
We'll see how things play out, but no player has ever been suspended twice under the domestic violence policy, and reporting on Urias has suggested that there's cell phone footage of the alleged incident, which took place in public. If that ends up being the case, I doubt anyone signs him.
I too am a neat guy

Y'all have stated that trout won't be traded by angels. But haven't stated why they wouldn't? And does he have negative trade value? Thx for chat
Steve Adams
1:25
Perry Minasian, the Angels' GM, stated it. Plainly. Emphatically. He's not going to be traded.
Darragh wrote about the reasons and touched on the valuation of his contract and such at the time:

Do the Dbacks sign Soler or JD Martinez?
Steve Adams
1:26
I think there's a good chance they end up with someone like Soler, JDM or Justin Turner.

Any guess on the Dodger's 40 man roster move? Trade Taylor, Vargas or Busch? Or who would you select as the DFA victim if no significant trade?
Steve Adams
1:27
I suppose they could be trying to work out a trade similar to the Yankees one, but it'd be more straightforward to DFA Ricky Vanasco or someone off the back end of the 40-man

The Dodgers deferred contracts are bad for baseball ... right?
Blue Man Group
1:28
Granted, it’s part of the game and not really breaking any rules, but do you feel the amount the Dodgers have been deferring lately has been a little excessive?
Steve Adams
1:28
Lots of these, too
1:29
In short, no. Because it's nothing new. Like... at all. The extent of the Ohtani deferrals are unprecedented, but teams have been doing this for decades. Here's (I think) everyone the Nats signed to a deferred-money deal in the past decade:

Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Patrick Corbin, Matt Wieters, Daniel Murphy, Jayson Werth, Rafael Soriano, Brad Hand, Jon Lester
Washington is still paying Rafael Soriano. He hasn't pitched for them since 2014.
1:30
Half of Max Scherzer's $210MM deal was deferred, including his entire $35MM salary in 2019, when the Nats won a World Series.
They deferred their ace's entire salary, used that flexibility to build the roster, and won a World Series. No one batted an eye.
The Orioles deferred 26% of Chris Davis' $161MM contract and will pay him through 2039.
1:31
Actually that may have been re-worked when he retired; but that was the initial plan.
The Reds deferred more than 40% of Bronson Arroyo's contract back in 2010.
