Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/17/17
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams
3:40
There are more solid 1Bs available than teams in need of a 1B/DH. I'd wager that one of LoMo, Alonso, Duda or Santana is left with a pretty disappointing contract. Jay Bruce could as well if he doesn't pounce early in free agency.

What kind of contracts do Davis and Holland get?
Steve Adams
3:41
I think Davis will top Melancon and Holland will get a strong three-year deal in the $13-15MM annual range. His second half hurt him, but I do think some teams will believe it was just a matter of fatigue in his first full year back from Tommy John. He was legitimately dominant for the first 2.5 months of the year or so.

Do you guys do these chats all year long or just in season? Thank you btw for doing them!
Steve Adams
3:41
Year-round -- three a week barring major scheduling conflicts for those of us who host them.

3:42
Do I cash on Scooter Gennett's big year the same way I did Dan Straily's?
Steve Adams
3:42
I think that's what he absolutely should try to do. I don't trust Gennett to repeat, and even if he does, he'll have 1.5 years of control remaining next summer and one next offseason. This is peak time to trade him as far as I'm concerned

What's a more likely Phillies acquisition: Stanton or Archer?
Steve Adams
3:43
Stanton. I don't know why everyone assumes the Rays will shop Archer when he's on arguably the best contract of any starting pitcher in baseball. They'll have competition for Giancarlo, and he may not want to approve a trade there, but I do think they'll be involved in talks for him.

Is Dickey going to give it up?
Steve Adams
3:44
I have no information as to what he's thinking outside of what's been reported. Dave O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution is as plugged in as Braves reporters get and wrote yesterday that he thinks Dickey will retire, so that's what I'm assuming until we see otherwise.

World Cup. Who are you going for?
Steve Adams
3:44
I am the last person on the planet to ask about soccer/futbol.
Don't Know From Adam (Lind)
3:45
Does Adam Lind get a sweet FA deal this offseason? Or should the Nats keep him to platoon w/Zim?
Steve Adams
3:45
I don't think he's going to get all that much in free agency -- it's an overcrowded market for his skill set again. I'd say the Nats should just give him a raise to $4-5MM and keep him.

MLB announced Portland and Montreal as possible expansion cities...thoughts?
Steve Adams
3:47
Rob Manfred has mentioned both of those cities for like three years now -- it's not really a new story that he's intrigued by them. Both would be better than his baffling suggestion of Mexico City. I get wanting to further expand the league beyond the U.S. and Canada, but Mexico City is a full half mile further above sea level than even Denver.

At some point I would like to see a second team in Canada, and I think Montreal makes plenty of sense.

Do you have a weekly podcast about mlb trade and FA talk?
Steve Adams
3:49
We had one for about a year and a half but discontinued it last year. There's been internal talk about reviving it, but no firm plans to do so now. You can go back and check out old episodes on iTunes, though obviously the topics are a bit dated now ha:

Some of the interviews with players, GMs, etc. might still make for interesting present-day listening

Stanton has a Full No-Trade Clause......will he accept a deal to come here, just to get away from the rebuild in Miami?
Steve Adams
3:49
Getting away from the rebuild in Miami to join the rebuild in Cincinnati?

Do AL teams have an advantage to get Otani since he can DH there?
Steve Adams
3:49
I think so, yeah.

What do you think the Nats should do this offseason (that came too soon!)?  Thanks.
Steve Adams
3:51
Add a better fifth starter, find someone to dump Matt Wieters on and get a better catcher, deepen the bench/bullpen. They don't need any massive upgrades outside of fifth starter and catcher. Bringing back Lind as Zimmerman insurance, as someone mentioned earlier, makes good sense to me.

How do the Dodgers clear their logjam of starting pitchers going into 2018? I don't see Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy and possibly Ryu being with the team next year when they have Kershaw, Hill,  Urias,  Buehler, Wood as starters, or possible starters. I suppose for depth they could keep shuttling them on/off the disabled list, but will they try to trade any of them?
Steve Adams
3:53
Urias will be lucky to pitch at all in 2018. He's not in the rotation mix following this summer's shoulder surgery:

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/06/julio-urias-to-undergo-shoulder...

I don't see why they wouldn't want to keep McCarthy around. He's been good when healthy enough to take the field, and they can afford it. They could just dump Kazmir on someone like the Phillies or White Sox and give up a mid-range prospect to convince them to do it.
The Dodgers have something like 10-12 rotation candidates every year and will probably manipulate the 10-day DL again next year as they did in 2017 to keep everyone fresh

How's this sound, Darnaud and Lagares for Jackie Bradley Jr?
Steve Adams
3:54
Sounds like the Red Sox would not do that.

Where does Bryce Harper Land this offseason?
Steve Adams
3:55
He's not a free agent. Back with the Nationals.

Will the posting fee keep the Rays from pursuing Otani?
Steve Adams
3:55
I don't think so -- but their ability to offer him a significant early-career extension won't be as great as other interested teams.

3:56
Would Stanton accept a trade to stl?
Steve Adams
3:57
I would imagine so. They'll be expected to contend in the NLC next year. He might prefer a West Coast team, but I think above all else he just wants to go somewhere that could land him in the playoffs.

Locks for the HoF still playing:  Kershaw, Cano, Felix, Pujols, Yadi, Beltre, Trout, Suzuki, Posey, Verlander ... Can you name any others?
Steve Adams
3:58
Votto. Beltran most likely.

Harper and Machado are playing at a level that'll get them there.
