Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/24/17
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams

I suppose I can break away from the Gmail chat convo I was having with Jeff Todd about 2017-18 free agents and the potential comeback of JNCO jeans for this week's chat.
(And yes, that is a very real conversation that was happening)
Welcome all!

Where does Moustakas end up and how much term/money will he get?
Steve Adams
3:13
C'mon Nature Boy. There's no K at the end of your first name.

I've not yet taken a deep dive into potential landing spots for all of the top FAs, but I'm at $90-95MM over five years for Moose. Tim and Jeff are with me on the years but a little lighter on the AAV. More like 5/85 for them at present.

What free agent makes the most money this offseason in your opinion?
Steve Adams
3:14
Darvish by a wide margin

Will J.D. Martinez stay with Arizona?
Steve Adams
3:14
Have said on many occasions that I simply cannot see it happening. Expanded upon at greater length here:

Should the Yankees trade Castro? Let Torreyes hold down second with Wade as the backup?
Steve Adams
3:17
I don't see huge demand for Castro. He's been a roughly league-average bat over his two years combined with the Yankees (.283/.317/.442, 99 OPS+) and he's guaranteed about $23MM over the next two years.

The 2B market will feature Neil Walker, Chase Utley and Brandon Phillips in FA (the latter two aren't great) and buckets of trade options ranging from Dee Gordon to Cesar Hernandez to Scooter Gennett... there are just so many alternatives out there... who's going to give up much or even take on all of the $23MM he's owed?

Who do you see as a realistic candidate for the rangers rotation next season? Mikolas? Cobb?
Steve Adams
3:18
Both seem perfectly plausible to me. Daniels has implied that he expects payroll to scale back by around $10MM or so, so I'm not envisioning a Darvish reunion or a run at Arrieta. Could look to re-sign Cashner, kick the tires on Lance Lynn. Tyler Chatwood is kind of an interesting guy with a bit of upside.

Should I shop Simmons?
Steve Adams
3:19
I wouldn't and I don't expect him to. Haven't gotten any indication that the Angels are going to sell off pieces this winter. The combo of Trout and Simmons is a great start for any contending team.

Where might kinsler go? Could Tigers take a bad contract back to up a return?
Steve Adams
3:19
Another 2B option on the market I somehow forgot!
3:21
Brewers, Blue Jays, Angels all make sense -- I don't think they'll need to take a bad contract back, but it could theoretically up their return, sure. And if that opportunity presents itself, why not take it? Could also just offer to pay most of his salary to enhance the return.

Who signs a bigger offseason contract, Holland or Wade Davis?
Steve Adams
3:22
Davis, and I don't think it'll be all that close. Holland just wasn't very good over the final three months. I think Davis has him beat by more than $10MM, though I do think there's still a chance Holland can get four years at a lower annual value than Davis.

Top 10 prospects opening day 2019?
Steve Adams
3:22
There is literally no one in the world who can accurately answer this question.

3:22
Do you think that the Dodgers should see about getting rid of Yasmani Grandal during the offseason, given the rise of Austin Barnes as a solid presence behind the plate and in the lineup?
Steve Adams
3:23
If they can get good value back in a trade for him, sure I guess. But I wouldn't shop him around and try to dump him or anything. Grandal is still really good.
But I do think Barnes can be an everyday catcher -- and a good one.
Tyler Chatwood
3:23
You mentioned Tyler Chatwood, what should I expect this offseason? Any chance of QO? If not, what is my potential deal going to look it and for which teams?
Steve Adams
3:23
I like Chatwood, but he'd accept a QO immediately.
3:25
I'm the high guy on Chatwood and think his grounders, velocity and general lack of hard contact will serve him well in free agency -- especially given his age. I like something in the Ivan Nova range, but no one else on the MLBTR staff seems to agree with me haha. I'm typically the most aggressive when predicting free-agent salaries, it seems, which serves me well sometimes and other times makes me look silly. Them's the breaks.

3:26
Which SPs do you see The Cubs in on?
Steve Adams
3:27
Second tier guys. Tough to imagine them paying $25MM+ to both Lester and one of Arrieta or Darvish in their decline phases. Cobb, Lynn, Otani obviously (along with every other team). Can see them trying to pry some really young controllable arms away from a club by dangling Schwarber or Happ
Darren
3:27
I like to ask this every time. How come Judge was never the #1 prospect?
Steve Adams
3:28
He's a corner-OF only with enormous swing-and-miss tendencies.
No one, probably not even the Yankees, expected a season like this one out of him.
3:30
Sorry at home right now and had to go chase the cat away from my yet-unwashed dishes from a late lunch, ha. He's a menace.

3:30
Could the Indians move Kipnis to a team in need of a second baseman(his true position)?
Steve Adams
3:31
As stated before, there are just so damn many alternatives at second base -- I don't think any second baseman could be sold at peak value this offseason unless they're just dirt cheap (maybe Cesar Hernandez?).

If they don't want to play Kip at 2B, I say put Brantley at 1B and move Kip to LF
Buck
3:31
Is Duquette going to be able to find us some Sp's? If not, will Peter fire him and let me run the team?
Steve Adams
3:33
He'll find some, but probably not enough to make them competitive barring a huge rebound/step forward from Gausman and Bundy. This is entirely speculative but I could see 2018 as DD's last year with Baltimore. His contract is up and reports of tension between him and Buck go back years now.

3:33
we just declined Dickey's option freeing up even more cash. Do you see us in the Darvish sweepstakes to head up a very young pitching staff?
Steve Adams
3:34
I think the Braves will be in on both Darvish and Arrieta. That's different than saying they're any kind of favorite to land either, but I do think they'll pursue both. Suppose that depends in part on who takes over as GM/president, of course.
