Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/27/20
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams
2:07
Final Tuesday chat before the offseason is upon us! Let's talk World Series, offseason for any team you like and whatever else may arise
Nats
2:08
What do we do this offseason?
Steve Adams
2:09
I like them for a back-end starter and some kind of upgrade to the lineup -- either left field or third base, though I think left field is a little cleaner fit. I do wonder whether they'll begin to consider Kieboom tradeable in a similar way that they did Giolito and Lopez after each struggled early, but that's only my speculation.

Marcell Ozuna or Michael Brantley would work real nice for the Nats, as would Justin Turner if the Dodgers opt to go younger at the hot corner.

JT's baseball's best C, dont get me wrong, but could James McCann actually provide more bang for your buck?
Steve Adams
2:10
It's easier to see McCann living up to the more modest price I expect him to command than to see Realmuto still being worth the $24MM+ AAV he'll have by year five of his contract, sure. But the up-front benefit is overwhelmingly skewed in JTR's value.
Er, in his favor.

2:11
To blow up or not to blow up? Is it worth it with most of my chips having down years?
Steve Adams
2:11
The Cubs can shake things up without blowing things up.
I expect that they'll shop Bryant and Schwarber, in particular, this winter.

2:12
Any truth to this George Springer wants out of Houston thing?
Steve Adams
2:13
Saw that report. My thoughts are that the player/his agent would never put that out there. Why broadcast something that inherently weakens your market? Seems likelier to be something Jim Crane wants out there so he can say "Well gosh we tried but he was set on leaving"
Nelson Cruz
2:14
Am I going to get that second year guaranteed by anyone? Odds I play in Minnesota next year?
Steve Adams
2:14
Depends on whether MLB and the PA agree to a universal DH in the near future. I think it's likelier he just gets another year at a higher AAV in Minnesota.
Chad
2:14
Who says no? Kris Bryant for Carter Kieboom and Eric Fedde
Steve Adams
2:15
Doubt the Nats part with that much club control for one expensive year of KB
Kev
2:15
Besides Higasioka, Who could be best catcher option to get if Yankee trade G.Sanchez away this offseason? Salvador Perez possible?
Steve Adams
2:16
The Royals aren't trading Perez.

The best option available would be just signing J.T. Realmuto. James McCann would be out there as a perfectly viable secondary option, and Cards fans will vomit, but Yadi Molina would be one hell of a way to flip the narrative from Gary.

Any chance MLBTR could upgrade their comments vehicle so people can see to whom people are replying? It causes a little confusion unless you put @Steve: at the beginning of your comment.
Steve Adams
2:17
Reasonable. I'll drop a note to Tim and our developers.
Steve
2:18
Any thoughts on who the white Sox may sign this off-season?
Steve Adams
2:18
They've been my George Springer pick for awhile. Mazara is a sure nontender.
James Paxton
2:18
Am I a Blue Jay next season?
Steve Adams
2:18
I know the Canada connection and all, but I feel they'd want more stable innings. I guess he could be a second piece behind a more durable rotation acquisition, though.
Champdo
2:18
Could you see the Tigers going after George Springer?
Steve Adams
2:19
The Tigers aren't going near a free agent of that caliber, nor would Springer want to sign there when he'll have interest from contending clubs.

Even with a full season of Soroka, the Braves still need another solid rotation piece, y/n?
Steve Adams
2:20
Yeah. I think they'll add someone behind Soroka, Fried and Anderson. I doubt it's anyone too exciting unless Anthopoulos goes for another one of his old guys and brings in Stroman. Barring that, I expect them to wait things out and make a value play for a veteran on a short-term (i.e. one-year) deal. That's how this front office has operated for the most part. Will Smith is still the only guy they've signed for more than two years.

springer to the red sox to replace mookie
Steve Adams
2:22
I don't think the Red Sox brought in a Rays exec who has specialized in finding value on the margins to set him loose on George Springer. I like Springer to a contending club with a much more open payroll outlook than the one in Boston; as I said before, I dig the White Sox as a fit but also like the Blue Jays or Phillies.
Byron
2:22
Springer to the Twins to replace Rosario?
Steve Adams
2:23
I would imagine if (when?) the Twins move on from Rosario you're looking at one of Alex Kirilloff or Trevor Larnach getting the look in his place. They might still bring in a veteran as a safety net, but that'd be someone lower-profile for a year or something.

In your opinion odds that Arenado gets traded this offseason? Thanks!
Steve Adams
2:25
It'd be easier to move him if he'd had a good season. For all the talk of trading Arenado, there's no real  guarantee he opts out after 2021, so the theoretically acquiring team is looking at the possibility of paying him $164MM from 2022-26 in his decline years.
It's not a great contract, particularly off a poor season at the plate.
2:26
The Rockies should be shopping Trevor Story, who IS an insanely appealing trade asset, but I'm sure they won't because owner Dick Monfort inexplicably still thinks this team can win.

Best available free agents after SP Bauer and RP Hendricks?
Steve Adams
2:27
Best non-Bauer SPs: Kevin Gausman, Marcus Stroman, Masahiro Tanaka, Jake Odorizzi

Best non-Hendriks RPs: A resurgent Trevor Rosenthal, Trevor May, Blake Treinen

Do the Dodgers bring back any of Joc/Kike/JT?
Steve Adams
2:29
Turner seems the likeliest. They have plenty of OF depth and couldn't really get Joc enough ABs this year even with the DH. Hernandez is pretty similar to Taylor, and the Dodgers tend to churn these quality utility pieces out as if they grow on trees somehow.

Turner would make sense to stay put, particularly if the team wins the World Series. If they fall to the Rays in seven games, then maybe they give into the "We need to shake things up" narrative to placate some folks.
Cardinals
2:29
Any chance we'd trade Bader, sign Brantley, and let Carlson play everyday CF?
