Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/8/19

Roark is a solid arm, but he's also the type of guy that I think current front offices undervalue.

Kyle Gibson gets more or less than 3/30?
Steve Adams
4:16
Under on both. I have a hard time seeing him at multiple years given that he's 32 and coming off a poor second half that was torched by that bout of ulcerative colitis late in the year.

Is Davey Martinez back with the Nats next year?
Steve Adams
4:16
I can't imagine they'd move on after this year's midseason turnaround.

reds and grandal? is there anything to that?
Steve Adams
4:17
They pursued catching upgrades last year and are in clear win-now mode. I'd be more surprised if they *didn't* go after him.

What can the Pirates do this off-season to improve things?   Do they hold onto Sterling Marte?
Steve Adams
4:20
Seems like peak time to move him. Two full years of control left but salary escalating up to 11.5MM next year. Should be plenty of teams looking for CF help, and the free-agent market for center fielders is a wasteland.
Frustrated Angel fan
4:21
Hope Angels do not play waiting game for Cole this off season and miss out on other opportunities. Does Maddon help halos if they pursue Hammels?
Steve Adams
4:23
Doubt he helps all that much. Hamels is going to want to sign wherever has the best blend of offering a clear winner (which the Angels are not) and a respectable salary.

Besides, there's no comparison between Hamels and Cole. If your options are to sign Hamels early or wait out the market for a chance at signing Cole, I'd wait out Cole. Of course, they could try to do both. They should have the money and they certainly have the rotation need.

Could you see the Cubs trading Contreras and signing Grandal?
Steve Adams
4:26
They still have three years of Contreras, so they'd need some pretty notable MLB-ready pitching help if they're going to play that kind of shell game.

I generally think the Cubs will be open to large-scale changes this winter, including listening on guys like Bryant or Contreras. But they're not going to go into the winter with the mindset, "We're trading Kris Bryant" or "We're trading Willson Contreras."

Do we ever see German pitch for the Yankees again?
Steve Adams
4:28
They traded for Chapman and then re-signed him. We obviously don't know full details on German's situation, of course, but the Yankees gave the largest RP contract ever to a pitcher who served a domestic violence suspension with them. I don't think they're suddenly going to trade or release German if and when he's ultimately disciplined by the league (barring some shocking revelations)

I have to pick one to keep, Grandal or Moustakas? Not a ton of options out there to replace either and no clear prospect ready to fill in.
Steve Adams
4:29
Grandal is the better player at the more scarce position.

Is Lindor the type of talent that, as a free agent, rich teams would move any shortstop to make room for him or would teams with established stars at short like Boston or Houston not be interested?
Steve Adams
4:31
Any high-end team would look at creative scenarios to get Lindor on the roster. Plus, Correa and Lindor are in the same service class, so they'll both become free agents at the same time.
QO Draft Loss Confusion
4:32
I keep seeing it written that if you sign a FA with a QO attached you lose your 2nd round draft pick, and if you sign another one you lose your 3rd remaining pick.  I read people saying that if you sign 2, you basically lose your 2nd and 3rd round picks.  This seems wrong!  If you sign one, you lose your 2nd round pick, and your remaining picks are rounds 1, 3 and 4.  At that point your 3rd remaining pick is in round 4.  So if you sign 2 FAs with QOs, you lose your 2nd and 4th round picks!
Steve Adams
4:32
It's not the same for every team
4:33
That's our explanation from last year, and we'll update for this year in the near future once we know who received QOs, have more luxury tax details, etc.
Aging Yankees
4:33
Is it a near lock that Gardner is back next year after his career year? Also, Edwin ($20 mm option vs. $5 mm buyout) likely going to be picked up by Yankees?
Steve Adams
4:35
At this point I don't see why they wouldn't try to keep him in the fold for another year. Encarnacion seems more likely to be bought out, in my view. But keeping him at a net $15MM wouldn't be too crazy; Cruz signed for 1/14.3 this past winter.
3B Market
4:36
Is Rendon back in DC next year?  Any chance he matches or exceeds the Arrenado deal?
Steve Adams
4:36
He could certainly be back -- they offered Harper $300MM -- but I don't think he's topping Arenado, no.
Jeff
4:37
Who do you think Yasiel Puig signs with this offseason?  My guess would be the White Sox
Steve Adams
4:37
Pretty reasonable guess

Will the Tigers have the worst record in baseball next year?
Steve Adams
4:38
They'll be in the bottom three to five. Let's see how the offseason goes, which of their pitching prospects make it to the Majors (and when) in 2020, etc. first though. No way of forecasting that right onw

Any word on a Pirates Manager? Any mention anywhere? Haven't heard or read one single thing since the day Hurdle was let go.
Steve Adams
4:39
Managerial searches will be ongoing from now until mid-November. A bunch of candidates that teams will want to interview aren't even available to talk right now since they're coaching playoff clubs
Q O
4:40
If you were facing a Q O decision, would you feel comfortable turning down the money when you might not get a better per year offer?  3 years at $45 mill better than the QO?
Steve Adams
4:42
3/45 is easily better than the QO. Annual salary doesn't matter much when you're on a one-year deal and one catastrophic injury away from seeing your earning power go up in smoke.

I applaud Trevor Bauer for his strategy of playing his contract on a series of one-year deals and think it'd be interesting for more free agents to do it. But there's a reason he's the only one.
4:43
Ok, I have to wrap up for the week. Jeff will chat Friday, Mark on Sunday and Connor next Monday. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve. Thanks for chatting everyone!
