Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 11/12/24

The Giants entered the offseason with something like $70MM less in projected payroll than they finished the 2024 season. That's before possible trades/non-tenders of Wade, Yaz, Doval, etc.

I think it's perfectly viable that they could add a $25MM salary or so and still end up with a payroll well shy of where they were in 2024.

Bohm for Devin Williams?
Steve Adams
1:33
This is the kind of thing I'd try to be pitching if I were Dave Dombrowski (Phillies' president).

Personally, I'd rather have the one year of Williams, but flipping Bohm for an expensive-ish reliever who'd be an actual difference-maker in the 'pen would be a nice get for them. Doesn't have to be Williams specifically (and again, I'd pass on that as the Brewers), but conceptually this feels in the ballpark to me more than just dumping Bohm for a few "meh" prospects

Is Wander Franco done in MLB?
Steve Adams
1:35
He's facing up to 20 years in prison even before this latest gun-related incident. He's been done in MLB for awhile.

Reports out of Detroit have Kenta Maeda still a viable option.  Think he should be cut loose?  Put on a short leash?  Toledo?
Steve Adams
1:38
He'll probably be on a short leash. They can't send him to Toledo. There's no point in releasing him over the winter since they'll have to pay him the full freight of the deal anyway.

Maeda still had good command last year. Missed fewer bats but not an egregiously low level. He was uncommonly homer-prone and struggled with men on base in a way not typical for him.

Not surprised the Tigers will give him a chance to rebound, and I think he has a better chance at turning it around than some other underwater starters in their mid/late 30s. Not saying I'd wager a comfortable sum on him doing so, but I don't think he's a surefire lost cause or anything like many Detroit fans do.

How many games do you think the Rays play in Montreal this summer?
Steve Adams

None

Any truth to the rumor that the D'Backs are talking to the Cubs about sending Gallen to Chicago for four of their top 70 prospects. Is that enough return for Gallen?
Steve Adams
1:40
I have not seen that "rumor" but I did just listen to D-backs GM Mike Hazen outwardly laugh at the idea of trading Gallen in a radio appearance this morning.

If Dana Brown made Framber Valdez available, and asked for a Burnes-esque return, who has the prospects to pay that price?
Steve Adams
1:42
Most teams have a pair of back-end top 100-ish guys (i.e. a pair of 50 FV prospects). The Orioles weren't uniquely positioned to acquire Burnes with the possible exception of simply having a deep enough farm to withstand subtracting to 50s.

I don't think there are many (or any) clubs that couldn't put together a compelling offer for Valdez.

I also don't think there's a particularly realistic chance he's moved, as the Astros are committed to contending in 2025 and Valdez is an easy QO candidate even if they're not going to sign him long-term.

Any significant signings prior to Soto making a decision?
Steve Adams
1:43
Passan suggested this morning that Teoscar isn't going to wait around for Soto, which I can buy after he sat in free agency for months last winter. Get early interest, take a strong deal and go relax somewhere for a couple months without worrying every day about where you're going to play, Teo.

Will Taylor Ward bring back a MLB level rotation arm? Any ideas on a comparable trade/ return?
Steve Adams
1:46
I think he could, but the Angels are so intent on contending around this middling group they currently have in house that it's hard for me to see them trading him. But sure, they could trade him for an immediate plug-and-play starter with minimal control remaining (Jon Gray, Tyler Mahle, Chris Paddack etc) or just move him for some mid-range prospects and use the freed-up cash to help sign a starter.

Can you see the Brewers entertaining Ha-Seong Kim as their next SS? Or do you feel like sliding over Ortiz or Turang will fill the void.
Steve Adams
1:49
If Kim is really seeking and receiving multi-year offers, I doubt it. I'd just move Turang or Ortiz over. Kim on a short-term deal would work fine, but I think Milwaukee feels it already has two potential plus defenders at shortstop making barely over the league minimum.

Taylor Ward for Brady Singer?
Steve Adams
1:49
Easy no for me, if I'm the Royals.
Justin
1:49
Most contract projections i've seen for Ha Seong Kim have seemed awfully low, in the 1-2 year, 10-24 million range.   What am I missing here?   The last time I checked, guys with an average bat and an above average glove are above average players.

He had shoulder surgery and isn't going to be ready for Opening Day. I took the Boras switch as a signal of going the Conforto/Hoskins/Rodon route of two years with n opt-out and pushed for our formal MLBTR prediction to be two years and an out but was outvoted. I don't see the point in him signing a three-year deal right now unless it has multiple opt-outs, so I think he either needs to get 4-5 years (which seems risky from the team side given his injury) or else take 2 with an out or a straight one-year.

Reds missing piece is Santandar or Tyler Oneil?  Think they sign one of them??
Steve Adams

I find either perfectly plausible

Could you see the Mariners and Rays trading again for the 142nd time and the M's get Lowe (2b) & Diaz (1b)? What might that take from the M's? Cole Young and Emerson Hancock? Your thoughts?
Steve Adams
1:53
I don't think the Rays would pull Young for one or even both of Diaz/Lowe, but I do like Yandy as a fit with the Mariners as they look to cut back on their strikeouts and add some established offense.

when was the last time the Guardians signed a free agent pitcher?
Steve Adams
1:54
They signed Ben Lively to a major league deal last winter and Matthew Boyd to a MLB deal over the summer.

Those were their first big league SP signings since Gavin Floyd in 2014.

Does the deferred portion of a players salary ever count towards the luxury tax?
Steve Adams
1:55
It's just adjusted down for net-present value. So Ohtani's $68MM doesn't count against the Dodgers' luxury tax, because the NPV is something like 10/437.
1:56
In that sense, it was never really a $700MM contract. It was announced as such, because the agency wants to look great, but it's pretty clear they hammered out a contract that generally fell in line with expectations and then tinkered with deferrals to get the best round number they could.

J. Naylor to Pirates for Ashcraft?
Steve Adams
1:57
I don't think the Bucs are giving up Braxton Ashcraft for a one-year rental of a first baseman who'd be pretty expensive by their standards.

I think the #1 infield target should be Hyeseong Kim. Do you think that this is a realistic pursuit for the Ms?
