Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 11/27/18

Steve Adams

Greetings, all. I -- like most people -- am 0-for-3 in the annual exercise in futility that is predicting where the market's top free agents will sign. Hooray! Apologies on the lack of a chat last week... with 40-man chaos day in full swing, I had to cut it.

Do we still go after Bryce?
Steve Adams
3:11
I never considered them all that likely to do so, and I do think the Donaldson deal ate up a pretty good chunk of their resources. Not saying they're done now or anything, of course, but Harper is much harder to envision now.

3:11
Have any of these early signings been a surprise?
Steve Adams
3:12
I haven't seen anything unusual yet. I mean, I'd probably have pegged Matt Moore for a minor league deal, but I don't think him getting like $2.5MM counts as a surprise.

thoughts on the twins claiming Cron
Steve Adams
3:14
They have a need at 1B/DH and claimed a useful bat who's projected to be paid at roughly the market rate for a useful but not elite 1B/DH -- maybe a bit under market rate. But we did see guys like Matt Adams, Logan Morrison, Mike Moustakas and Lucas Duda all sign for $6.5MM or less last season, so Cron's $5MM to $5.5MM is pretty in line with all that.

It's a fine add that cheaply and effectively addresses an area of need. Makes sense, but also nothing to get too excited about.

What’s Camargo do now? RF?
Steve Adams
3:14
Play 3-5 different positions and bounce around the diamond in super utility fashion.

What would it take for the Mets to get Hanniger or Diaz back in a deal centered around Cano ?
Steve Adams
3:15
I don't think the Mariners would consider giving up Haniger or Diaz in any deal designed to shed Cano's contract and think the reporting around it today feels sensationalized.

3:16
Cano, $10M per year, Diaz and take back Bruce? What am I missing here?
Steve Adams
3:16
Again, all of the Mets/Cano speculation today teeters on ridiculous, to me.

3:16
Does Corbin sign today?
Steve Adams
3:17
No. He's meeting with one of the dozen-plus teams that's going to make a pitch to him. It doesn't mean a ton (as I suggested in that post)
Dick Williams
3:17
Do you think I resigned raisel to make it easier to trade him?
Steve Adams
3:17
It wouldn't have been hard to trade him in the first place, and this contract does little to change his stock (if it changes it at all).
Bobby
3:17
Your opinion on the Chisenhall signing?
Steve Adams
3:18
Perfectly reasonable, low-cost stopgap to help while Polanco is out. I think it's a fine deal
Baltimore Orioles
3:18
What should we do about catcher? Joseph seems like he's toast and Sisco didn't prove he was ready last year.
Steve Adams
3:19
Give Sisco another chance (terrible pun intended). Really, though, what's the point in moving on from him? The Orioles are going to be objectively terrible next season, which is the perfect time to let a young, potential building block try to work through his struggles in the Majors

Hi. Its Mo.   With Donaldson now off the board, should I go all in on trading for Goldschmidt?  Or should I take a run at Arenado?  I have a cupboard full of you arms at my disposal.
Steve Adams
3:20
There's really no indication that the Rox are willing to move Arenado, though I think they should be. Goldschmidt makes sense for the Cardinals, but that's true of like 6-8 other teams as well.
Jacob
3:20
Anymore news on Reds and Sonny Gray. I think it’s a perfect fit.
Steve Adams
3:21
I don't really consider the Reds any more perfect a fit than the 8-10 other teams that are probably interested in buying low on Gray. They've been talking for awhile; if they were lined up on price point, a deal would've happened by now
jojo
3:21
Diaz to ATL for Austin Riley, Kyle Wright & Drew Waters?
Steve Adams
3:22
Would be hard for the Mariners to pass that up, but also not sure the Braves would go to such lengths to get Diaz
Brad
3:22
what do you think of the Matt Moore signing for Detroit?
Steve Adams
3:23
I wouldn't have guaranteed him a 40-man spot and would've preferred to just wait out the market to see if someone interesting can't find a good landing spot. There's just nothing to like about Matt Moore at this point, except I guess the fact that like 7 years ago he was an elite prospect? That's not much to dream on at this point.

3:23
After 2 seasons of dreadful catching, are we really entrusting Kurt Suzuki for everyday duties?
Steve Adams
3:24
Hey, at least he can hit. That much wasn't even clear of Wieters when they signed him.

I think the Nats will still add another catcher to split time with Zuk, but he might get the lion's share of the work.
Jason
3:24
Will the Twins try for Goldschmidt, or is Cron their permanent answer at 1B this year?
Steve Adams
3:25
The Goldy/MN thing was shot down almost immediately after it was reported. They asked about him, because of course they did (every team will, for the most part), but I doubt they're going to give up the type of talent the D-backs want for a one-year rental.

I see Bumgarner is now available, and I realize that have Zaidi has different plans but history tells me he wants major league or almost major league players back ... maybe 4 of them.   Who looks to be the best fit for Bumgarner
Steve Adams
3:27
If the Giants want four MLB-ready players for Bumgarner, then Bumgarner will be a Giant in 2019.

Madison Bumgarner hasn't been the Madison Bumgarner most fans associate with his name value for upwards of three years now.
3:28
Bumgarner's K%, BB%, SwStr% and Chase% have all taken a drastic turn for the worse. His velocity is down, while his contact rate is way up. His opponents' hard-hit rate has soared from 25.8% in 2013 to 41.6% in 2018.

He isn't bad, but I also don't consider him an elite arm right now -- at least not based on his 2017-18 performance.

With Suzuki and McCann off the board, what's the status of other FA cathers? Grandal, Ramos, Lucroy, etc.
Steve Adams
3:30
Lots of teams still need catching help. Dodgers, Rockies, Astros, Twins, Phillies, Red Sox, Brewers and Angels could all use an upgrade back there. There are more openings/needs than there are free-agent/trade options, which is good for catchers and teams who have catchers to sell (i.e., the Marlins)

Could you see the braves trading for Eddie Rosario to cover their OF need?
Steve Adams
3:30
I can see them having interest but can't see the Twins being willing to move him
