Steve Adams

Greetings to all, and happy offseason! We can talk trades, free agency and relentless second-guessing of our annual Top 50 free agents for the next hour
Brian

Are the Giants going to get Stanton?
Steve Adams
3:06
I don't put much stock, at all, into the rumors linking them. The Giants have multiple needs around the roster and little room to address them while staying under the luxury tax. Their farm system is also weak. There are probably 10 other teams that make more sense for Stanton than the Giants.
3:07
Their constant inclusion in rumors just seems more like the Marlins trying to leverage the media to pressure the Dodgers than an actually plausible scenario.

Russell to TB for Archer?
Steve Adams
3:08
Russell isn't controlled any longer than Archer. There's no sense in a one-for-one swap there. The Cubs would need to add more -- and not filler pieces, either.

Arrieta to the Braves?
Steve Adams
3:09
I think they'll be in on pretty much every pitcher in the first and second tier of free agency, so sure I can see it. Wouldn't call them any kind of front-runner but it's in the realm of plausibility.

How bad am I going to mess up Atlanta's plans for the future?
Steve Adams
3:11
Farm system is still stacked, payroll outlook is pretty clean beyond 2018. It's a pretty nice spot for a new GM to come into, honestly.

Any chance Sandy Leon gets traded?
Steve Adams
3:11
Probably a better chance he's just non-tendered.

3:11
Kris Bryant. Will he sign a multiyear contract?
Steve Adams
3:12
If he does it'll probably just lock in his arbitration years. I'm assuming he's going to want to reach free agency as early as possible; don't see many Boras clients of his caliber take early extensions

Arrieta to Texas
Steve Adams
3:13
They need to add 2-3 starters, multiple relievers, and at least one OF/1B bat. They have like $30-35MM to spend. Arrieta would eat up an enormous amount of that, even on a backloaded deal.

I wrote like 2000 words on their offseason here: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/offseason-outlook-texas-rangers...

Cozart cracks 3/40 w no QO?
Steve Adams
3:15
There's no reason he shouldn't. If he's signing at any less than that, then every contender in the league should shuffle things around to try to cram him onto the roster.

Is Yasmani Grandal a good fit for the Nats?
Steve Adams
3:15
Definitely, though he's only a bandaid since he'll be a free agent next winter. But yeah, I absolutely think he'd fit well there.

3:16
Am I going to let you work today?
Steve Adams
3:17
I suppose I may as well take one of these. I've mentioned my cat in the past and get a handful of questions with this sort of name each week.

My girlfriend and I had to put Gizmo down completely unexpectedly about 10 days ago. He was only nine. It was awful and heartbreaking. If you have a pet, give him some extra love tonight -- they're precious and painfully unpredictable. Losing a pet is awful (especially when you work from home in a fairly small apartment) and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
Neil Walker
3:17
Am I a Brewer opening day next year?
Steve Adams
3:18
I think there's a decent chance of it. He excelled there, they have a clear need, he can probably be had on a two-year deal. Lots of reasons that it's a good fit.

Better year in 2018....Morrow or Betances??
Steve Adams
3:19
I like Betances to stay healthier. Can't bank on that with Morrow -- especially not after how hard LA rode him in the postseason.
Cesar Hernandez
3:19
I'm I going to be traded this off-season?
UrBoi
3:19
Should Yankees trade Castro and if so where could he go?
Steve Adams
3:21
Lots of questions on potential 2B trades. I've said in the past that it's a terrible market to be selling a second baseman because there are about a half-dozen options out there (Ian Kinsler, Dee Gordon, etc.) to say nothing of free-agent possibilities like Walker. I wouldn't *expect* a great market to materialize if you're hoping your team can move a second baseman.
Hernandez might be an exception because is quietly very good and has three years of cheap control remaining. Castro, not so much.

Over/under on DiPoto trades before opening day - 5.5 sound about right?
Steve Adams
3:21
Always take the over when you're talking Dipoto.

Carlos Beltran
3:22
Should I play one more year or take my ring and ride off into the sunset to begin my coaching career?
Steve Adams
3:23
He got his ring and wasn't especially productive this season. Seems like a good time to call it, but I have no clue what his plans are at present. From a purely speculative standpoint -- start the clock to Cooperstown, Carlos.

3:23
Todd Frazier potential fit for SF Giants? seems like he would be good buds with Posey, Crawford, Belt, and Pence.
Steve Adams
3:24
I really like the fit, yeah. I pushed for us to pick the Giants for Frazier on our Top 50, but it's a collaborative effort and that didn't end up happening. I'm fairly certain I'll pencil him in for SF on my personal picks thoughl

Would the tigers have any interest in trading Fulmer to the Cubs for Ian Happ and other quality pieces AND having Chicago take Zimmermann and his 74M?  The Cubs wouldn't want Zim, obviously but they'd basically be paying him what Fulmer is actually worth...
Steve Adams
3:26
If they could get Happ+ AND ditch Zimmermann, I think they'd absolutely do that. The Cubs, however, almost certainly would not.

Zimmermann's no-trade could complicate things, too, though he'd be going somewhere that's still close to his Wisconsin home (closer) and going from a rebuilding club to a contender so I'm sure he'd probably be OK with it.

Still, that is just so, so much for the Cubs to give up for Fulmer -- especially coming off elbow surgery
Angels 2018
3:26
Since the Angels do not need a 1st baseman with Cron, Valbuena and Pujols on the roster, plus have a desperate need for a 2nd basemen and less fragile starting pitching, why did MLBTR choose Yonder Alonso as the free agent most likely to be signed by the Angels?  It makes little sense.
