Has Jeter Downs' stock really fallen that far?
Steve Adams
2:02
He's batted under .200 with a sub-.300 OBP and a 30% strikeout rate in two full seasons of AAA ball now.

As a Twins fan, I am frustrated in the economics of MLB. Seems only about 8 teams in biggest markets have a chance. Do you see any chance of a salary cap or increased revenue sharing/luxury tax so every team has a chance to compete?
Steve Adams
2:04
You're basically asserting that the Twins could offer 10/285 -- their final offer to Correa -- but not 13/350.

That premise suggests that the Twins were incapable of offering an additional three years and $65MM -- an AAV of $21.667MM that'd be owed more than a decade from now, at a time when that type of salary will probably buy ... a fourth starter?

Over the past decade, the QO (based on the average of the game's top 125 salaries) has seen a 47.7% increase. The median MLB payroll has seen a 74% increase. MLB revenue has jumped from 7-something billion to 10.7 billion.
2:05
The Twins could've paid Correa. They chose not to, and they stopped at a weird spot, no less. If you were willing to go to 285, I legitimately don't understand why you stop there and don't just overpay to get the deal done. It was weird, and if they thought $285MM -- which is $10MM more than he rejected from the Tigers a year ago -- was going to get the job done after the market exploded, they were kidding themselves.
2:06
In October, 10/285 would've sounded totally feasible to me. Once Turner got 11/300 and Bogaerts got 11/280, that offer was no longer viable.
2:07
I wrote about this very subject, at length, for Trade Rumors Front Office subscribers last night.

Bottom line: I don't agree that the Twins had no chance. They just drew their line in the sand at a really weird point.

Is Dansby Swanson really a necessary move for the Cubs?  I don't see him moving the dial much for them, particularly with Hoerner already at SS.
Steve Adams
2:09
Don't look at it as an upgrade at shortstop. Look at it as an upgrade for the roster. If you think Swanson is a 4-5 win player at SS (which is reasonable), then you're just pushing another 4-5 win player over to 2B in Hoerner, at the expense of Madrigal, who's really shown very little so far.

Signing Dansby is more of a Madrigal replacement than a Hoerner replacement.

Yes, he'd move the needle and make the Cubs better.

Not one peep about Sano since his release. Will he do better than a minor league deal?
Steve Adams
2:09
Maybe a couple million on a one-year deal?

Nicest player or manager meanest player or manager you've dealt with Steve?
Steve Adams

Denard Span is like the nicest human I've ever interacted with
Luzardo
2:10
I'm an ace in the making. They will be talking about me in the same breath as Cy Young. Why are teams looking at Lopez when I'm the diamond in the rough. Injuries are in the past.
Steve Adams
2:11
I think Pablo Lopez is great, but if I were trying to trade for a Marlins pitcher, I agree it'd be Luzardo.
Four years of control versus two

Stanton and Hicks for Tatis, who says no 1st?
Steve Adams
2:12
Just not plausible; the Padres aren't trying to dump Tatis.

Are the White Sox fielding calls on Liam Hendriks, Tim Anderson, Lucas Giolito, Lance Lynn and others? If so, do you expect them to do a rebuild at this point?
Steve Adams
2:13
I don't expect them to rebuild, and they've told teams they're not trading Anderson. I don't think they'll sell low on Giolito, either. Lynn or Hendriks, I guess I could see, just as pricey veterans with minimal time left on their respective contracts.

Please tell.me the return for Soto won't end up like the return for Betts...
Steve Adams
2:14
The Nationals' return for Soto was far better than the Red Sox' return for Betts. As it should've been. It was 2.5 years of Soto versus one year of Betts.

What's the market been for big sexy, Bartolo Colon this off-season?
Steve Adams
2:15
I've been working tirelessly to acquire him for a night of beers, but to no avail. Text me, Bartolo. Let's be friends.

Is Pittsburg’s asking price for Reynolds still “any organizations top 3 prospects”? And could he be had for Luciano, Matos, & anybody else not named Kyle Harrison?
Steve Adams
2:16
My general response on Reynolds offers is basically, "Think of the two prospects you absolutely don't want to trade. Start with them, and then add another couple pieces."

2:17
Who will be competitive first? The Nats or Pirates?
Steve Adams
2:17
Pirates are a lot further along in the rebuild.

We just D/F/A ed Jeter Downs. Does this telegraph that we are about to sign Dansby Swanson?
Steve Adams
2:19
It telegraphs that Jeter Downs has had two terrible years and they no longer view him as worthy of a 40-man spot.
2:20
It is wholly unrelated to Dansby Swanson, who I do not expect the Red Sox to sign. Although the notion of Boston paying more to sign Swanson than they offered to Bogaerts... well, I would like to see how the front office tries to spin that one.

In the MLBTR article about Jeter Downs being released by Boston, there was a mention of him having two more option years available. I have been around long enough to remember when prospects had a certain number of options. When did that change? Also, any chance the Dodgers might try to trade for Jeter Downs?
Steve Adams
2:21
Players have three option years. The Red Sox DFA'ed him with two of those options remaining.
2:22
It's not different. I also don't think Downs is going to have a huge market. Someone like the Nats or Tigers or Pirates might claim him and take a look in Spring Training, but again, this is someone who's batted .193/.292/.368 with a 30% strikeout rate in two Triple-A seasons.
His DFA shouldn't be a big surprise.

2:23
What SP1 do you see the Orioles targeting if they go the trade route?
Steve Adams
2:24
There aren't really many/any aces available, and I wouldn't expect the Orioles to pursue said pitcher even if he became available. Nothing they've done this offseason suggests they're making a concerted push to win in 2023.

Is McGriff a HOFer or a benefit from no PEDers ?

If you think a Reynolds trade requires TWO untouchable prospects and a few others, what do you see with a trade for ME? 1/2 team ownership or something close???
