Steve Adams

Greetings! Apologies on not chatting last week -- schedule at the Meetings didn't afford me much of an opportunity to do so.
But, we actually have some free-agent signings and trades to discuss! Huzzah
Let's get underway

Ovrall take Dodgers trade?
Steve Adams
3:05
Worked out for both teams nicely -- Braves get that money off the books sooner and get a decent rotation flyer (McCarthy) plus a complete lotto ticket in Kazmir. Dodgers massively lessen their luxury tax hit, open first base for Bellinger full time, etc. Well done by both parties

Why would the Cubs take Darvish over Arrieta?
Steve Adams
3:06
Darvish is better and Boras is probably asking a similar price -- if not a greater one -- for Arrieta.

Why in the world did the Sox re-sign Moreland?
Steve Adams
3:07
I'd have liked to have seen them do more with the spot, but I never really bought into them giving Hanley full-time ABs there in 2018. If they find a way to move on from HanRam and still add a significant bat at DH, it makes all the more sense. Moreland is great at first from a defensive standpoint

Are the Marlins really going to trade J.T. Realmuto???
Steve Adams
3:08
They should.

I don't think they will.

But they should.

Am I done for the winter or do you see my striking another deal by ST? If so, who fits the bill?
Steve Adams
3:09
I don't think the Cardinals are done at all, no. There's still room to add to that bullpen, in particular. And they can still deal away an outfielder (Grichuk)

Will an market for Eric Hosmer ever develop beyond the Padres?
Steve Adams
3:11
Well, the Royals will continue to be in that fray along with the Padres. I'd imagine Boras can drum up some kind of interest from another club's owner, but there aren't a ton of obvious fits. Maybe if his price drop far enough and the Yankees can dump Ellsbury, he can get New York to engage. Could try to push him on the Rangers. But yeah, there's a pretty clear lack of contending clubs looking to spend heavily on first basemen

Likely hood of Machado or Donaldson getting traded?
Steve Adams
3:11
I think Machado will go. Not Donaldson

Am i gonna get a return of Reyes, Gyorko+ ? Ill look better in red anyway.
Steve Adams
3:13
Like I said, I don't think Donaldson goes, and I don't think the Cards would give up Reyes and Gyorko to get him anyway.

How much would yelich cost to acquire from the Braves?
Steve Adams
3:13
Think of the two prospects you would in no way shape or form be comfortable trading. Start the package with them. Add another 2-3 pieces of value.
METS MAN
3:14
Do you think the Mets will sign either Hosmer, A-Gon or Moustakas or trade for Longoria?
Steve Adams
3:15
One of those things is not like the other.

I can see them rolling the dice on Gonzalez, sure. Signing one of the former Royals or trading for Longo? Not so much.
Miguel Cabrera
3:16
Will I be traded this year?
Steve Adams
3:17
Who's taking on that contract coming off a season in which he was a below-average bat with no defensive value and a pair of herniated disks in his back? It might be the worst contract in baseball. At least Pujols is done two years sooner.
I'm Steve Adams, look at me!

Any Rick & Morty reference is a good one.

Zack Britton and machado to dodgers ?
Steve Adams
3:20
The Dodgers are one of the few teams that can realistically claim to not need Machado. I guess you could play him or Turner or Seager at 2B for a year.

I've gotten buckets of questions about Zach Britton. As I've said since the trade deadline, I don't know why any team would give up top-level prospects for him after a season in which he missed half the year with a pair of forearm strains and posted a 7 K/9 against a 4 BB/9 when healthy. The O's aren't moving him without a huge return, so you're surrendering elite prospect(s) for the right $12MM+ for a one-year rental of a reliever coming off that kind of season? Hard pass.

thoughts on castros ability to play third?  and how much would the marlins need back to move him?  seems like anything that reduces payroll over the next 1-3 seasons is on the table...   thoughts?
Steve Adams
3:22
I don't think he'd require much in the way of prospects, but you're talking about moving a below-average defensive second baseman with an average bat to third base and calling it a day. That's not a very inspiring solve for them, and it'd push them up closer to the luxury tax as well. Given the choice between Starlin and just rolling the dice on Christian Arroyo, I think the Giants would be better off just playing Arroyo at 3B.

When does the offseason officially start? Can I make a move yet?
Steve Adams
3:22
The Giants traded Matt Moore and signed Nick Hundley in the past five days after spending more than a month negotiating for Giancarlo Stanton. It's not like they haven't been active.

Odds of Cubs making a blockbuster trade to get Machado?
Steve Adams
3:23
Reeeeaaallly don't see it

Does Tony Watson end up with a 9th inning gig? Maybe Colorado, St. Louis, or Anaheim make some sense?
Steve Adams
3:24
Nah, I think he'll land as a setup man somewhere. He's a fine reliever, but he's not going to be the best reliever in any 'pen that he's a part of.

Any chance phillies trade joseph
Steve Adams
3:25
At this point they might as well just DFA him. I don't think anyone's going to give up real value for him, they're more set than ever at 1B, and committing a bench spot to a 1B only on the short side of the platoon doesn't make a ton of sense to me.
