I think they largely have done that already
Jed
1:30
Am I actually going to some significant moves? The team has major holes to fill.
Steve Adams
1:30
The Cubs' lack of activity to date isn't indicative of them not trying to improve the club. And by the time the offseason is over, they'll have made several moves to do so.
1:31
I get the frustration, but they're hardly the only win-now club not to make any additions yet. (Twins, Mariners, Astros, Jays, Rangers have all done very little or nothing at all in some cases)

Can you explain how the Dodger luxury tax and payroll? I am still confused on it. How does $2 million base pay get to $46 million against the payroll? Also does the money being payed in the deferred period count towards the payroll then?
Steve Adams
1:33
Money in 2034-43 is worth less than present-day money. So the league calculates the net present-day value at $460MM. That, over the ten-year term that Ohtani will spend in LA, is the luxury tax hit.

They won't be taxed on the contract in the years those deferrals are being paid out, because they're already being taxed on it during the 10 years Ohtani is playing in L.A.

Do you personally think that Bieber gets traded this offseason
Steve Adams
1:34
Yup
Boring
1:34
This off-season didn’t have many big organization changing free agents, but this off season is moving slower then my grand parents… when will the wall break allowing mass signings and trades
Steve Adams
1:34
Most offseasons play out like this.

With San Francisco exploring a trade for a shortstop, is it safe to say that Farhan Zaidi has reconsidered his statement about Marco Luciano being the Giants everyday shortstop next year? And what do you think happens with Joey Bart?
Steve Adams
1:36
He never said Luciano would be the shortstop. He said in October he'd get the chance. A month later, he said the org hoped Luciano would seize the job but that they'd likely look to add some insurance. I don't think trading for Kyle Farmer or someone of that ilk is a true impediment for Luciano in the long run. Luciano struck out in 36% of his AAA plate appearances and even more often in the Majors anyway. He looks very much like someone who needs more AAA time.

What are the Yankees doing with 5 catchers on their 40 man roster , even after trading Higgy?  I don’t see much trade value there, even in Jose Trevino, who if traded, leaves them with 4 inexperienced catchers.
Steve Adams
1:38
I doubt they'll all stick on the 40 for the rest of the offseason. Ben Rortvedt in particular seems vulnerable, as he's out of options

Batted ball metrics ultimately land Chapman a higher guarantee than Bellinger? Though Bellinger's age may play a factor as well.
Steve Adams
1:40
No. I know Chapman has the sexy Statcast profile and Bellinger's is the opposite, but Bellinger strikes out half as often, is 2-3 years younger, and is coming off a much better walk year at the plate. I think both will still get more than most people are expecting but I think Bellinger's deal will be comfortably ahead
Am I wrong? Let's see:
Bigger contract?

Cody Bellinger (91.2% | 618 votes)

Matt Chapman (8.8% | 60 votes)

Total Votes: 678

Man I expected a FEW more votes for Chappy, ha

Does the The signing of Tom Murphy make sense for the Giants?
Steve Adams
1:42
He's a super underrated catcher who can hit and can't stay healthy. Good guy to pair with Bailey. I don't think you count on Sabol as the backup, and this front office is obviously ready to move on from Bart. I like the signing.

So is Matsui possibly the closer in SD?
Steve Adams
1:43
If that deal is finalized, I think he and Suarez will get save opportunities next year. Suarez might be first in line since he has MLB experience, but both will probably get their chances.

Wondering why more low/midrange revenue teams don't try a Rays' approach.  I realize market inefficiencies become less so once more teams come in, but it's impressive they've managed over the last half dozen years without serious "rebuilding".
Steve Adams
1:45
Tons of teams try to emulate the Rays. That's why half the front office hires you see around the league seem to be former Rays execs. It's just a hard model to replicate with consistency.

will the rays sign a free agent catcher or go with alex jackson?
Steve Adams
1:45
The Rays like Rene Pinto a lot, but they still need to add catching help in some capacity. Pinto/Jackson can't be the endpoint.

What do you think of the Reds moving Encarnacion-Strand, India in some type of deal for Luzardo? If Marlins were interested in the KC first baseman, wouldn't they be interested in this?
Steve Adams
1:46
Pasquantino would've been one of many pieces going for Luzardo. I don't think CES+India is close to enough to get Luzardo.

If the Red Sox don't get Yamamoto, where do they go from there?
Steve Adams
1:49
Jordan Montgomery and Shota Imanaga, most likely. Giolito, perhaps.

With the Braves trading for lefty relievers who throw hard and having multiple years of control, is this a sign that AJ Minter will not receive an extension after this year? Also do you think that the Braves are getting PTBNL so they can have the needs for a team with a particular starting pitcher the braves are targeting?
Steve Adams
1:49
I'd be surprised if the PTBNLs coming to the Braves for Stassi and Gonzales were of much note.

why have the Reds been so quiet? they sure were fun to watch at times last year
Steve Adams

They've spent $87M!

Does Trevor Bauer get a MLB contract?
Steve Adams

He didn't last year. I doubt it this year.
