Steve Adams
2:09
Happy holidays all -- let's get another chat underway
Cubs just claimed outfielder Phil Ervin off waivers from the Mariners as I was starting this one up

Gleyber and Deivi for Castillo. Who says no?
Steve Adams
2:10
Seems like more than the Yankees would want to give up.
Adam Steves
2:10
Do the Blue Jays land Springer, LeMahieu, neither, or both?
Steve Adams
2:10
I'm to the point where I expect them to land one of Springer, DJLM, Bauer or Realmuto.
Jordan
2:10
What are the reds doing ?
Steve Adams
2:12
Cutting payroll -- although it might not be quite that simple. I'll reserve judgment, because it's possible that they've simply identified what they deem to be a flooded area of the market -- right-handed relief pitching -- and chosen not to spend there since bargains will abound late in the winter. If they really do reallocate those dollars and bring in a Semien or Gregorius or Kim, then the Iglesias salary dump and Bradley non-tender won't look so egregious.

Yankees need to get a shortstop and move Gleyber to 2b. Agree?
Steve Adams
2:14
I generally don't think it's wise to look at anything so linearly. That's one of the countless avenues they could take to upgrading the roster. I think mistakes are made when a team boxes itself into a singular line of thinking. Torres doesn't need to be an all-world defender at shortstop for the Yankees to play him there and still have that be the most sensible alignment. I'd like the team better with Gleyber at SS and DJLM at 2B than I would Simmons at SS and Gleyber at 2B, for instance.
Hmmm...
2:14
Does Sugano get more than 3 years in this market?
Steve Adams
2:15
I don't think so, no, but I wouldn't be shocked by a deal unless it got up into the five-year range or something.

2:15
will the mets land springer?
Steve Adams
2:15
That's my pick at this point, but even Sandy Alderson, Steve Cohen, and George Springer don't definitively know the answer to that question yet.

A Lindor for K. Bryant+pieces doable for both teams?
Steve Adams
2:17
Cleveland is trading Lindor not only because Dolan won't pay to extend him but because Dolan doesn't want to pay him in 2021. Adding Bryant doesn't work.

Does Yoenis Cespedes follow his brother to Chicago?
Steve Adams
2:18
Yoelkis isn't going to start in the Majors, and Yoenis is probably taking a one-year deal wherever he signs (if he signs). I doubt the deal with his brother matters to him right now in terms of choosing a destination.

Okay but seriously, is there any word on if Bauer has reconsidered his “only one year contracts” stance? And if not, you see the Angels passing on him?
Steve Adams
2:19
Bauer and his agent have said, repeatedly throughout the offseason, that they're open to longer-term deals. We've written about it extensively here. Rachel Luba was just on MLB Network Radio this week talking about it again.

The Angels are a perfectly viable fit to me, be it on a one-year deal or a multi-year deal.

where Does Mooustakas go too if he does get traded
Steve Adams
2:19
I don't see anyone taking on the Moose deal.

Do the Mariners reunite with Taijuan Walker?
Steve Adams
2:21
If they offer him the most money, sure. He's not going to go there for sentimental reasons or a discount, though. I think Walker is less interesting than many of his free-agent peers, personally, and think the M's could (or should) aim higher.

Do the white Sox get either Hendriks or Colome
Steve Adams
2:22
They'll sign at least one prominent reliever, doesn't need to be one of those two. And Hendriks is much better than Colome, for what it's worth. I don't think the price tags on those two will be particularly close.

K Bryant for Gonsolin.  Who said no.
Steve Adams
2:22
I'm not giving up Gonsolin for a year of Bryant when I could just re-sign Turner for less money.

5 yrs 100 million is that enough for DJ?
Steve Adams
2:22
I think LeMahieu would sign that, especially with the Yankees, yes.
Anthony
2:23
Considering how outspoken Bauer was against the Astros after their scandal, do you think he would still be open to joining the Mets if they sign Springer first?
Steve Adams
2:24
I'd imagine the millions upon millions of dollars would help him to bury the hatchet. I don't think Bauer would sign in Houston or sign on to play for AJ Hinch or Alex Cora, but could he get past it with one player -- especially one as good as Springer? I don't see that as a roadblock.

That said, I have a very hard time seeing both landing with the Mets. I think it's likely one or the other, with Springer the preference.

Suarez for Kieboom and Robles any chance of that happening?
Steve Adams
2:26
I think Robles' glove is so good that they wouldn't put him in the package, selling low on him while also buying low on Suarez. Kieboom in that type of deal seems more plausible.
Jerry Dipoto
2:26
Is 75 wins out of range? How short is my leash?
Steve Adams
2:26
I don't think 75 wins is out of range for the Mariners, and I don't think Jerry Dipoto's leash as GM is short.
2:28
If he'd been trying to win consistently, that'd be one thing, but ownership signed off on this rebuild, and he's put together an elite farm system in short order, with enough young talent at the MLB level that they're already leaning back toward win-now mode. The Mariners started their rebuild after the Orioles and will probably finish before Baltimore does. (That's not a knock on the O's, and Mike Elias inherited a much worse situation in Baltimore, just saying it as a testament to a pretty quick turnaround in Seattle)

2:28
Tanaka or Sugano? Who would you choose?
Steve Adams
2:29
Everything depends on price, contract, etc. For 2021, I'd take Tanaka since he's proven he can succeed in MLB. If you were making me sign one of them to a three-year deal, I'd probably take the younger pitcher who doesn't have a known elbow issue (Sugano)

do the Twins bring in any impact players?
