Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/11/25

He's 35 and hadn't had a truly strong offensive showing (outside the shortened 2020 season, when he had 150 PA) basically ever. Last year's production was propped up by a .385 BABIP. I don't think anyone expects him to hit close to that level again. Teams view him similar to how they always have ... he's a good middle infield glove with good contact skills but basically an empty batting average. I can see him getting a couple million bucks on a big league deal, especially if a team has some injuries pop up.

do the Yankees truly feel set with their rotation, or do you think they have another move to make? Dylan Cease is a good fit in my mind if the trade can line up.
Steve Adams
1:55
Cole, Fried, Rodon, Gil, Schmidt is pretty darn nice. I'm sure they've kept themselves apprised of the price for Cease -- what contending team wouldn't? -- but I don't think they'll pay said price. If they somehow lose Cole and Gil to injury or something, well then, sure, something like that is more on the table.

What are your thoughts on where I might end up? Boston? Maybe the Cards sign me and I'm close to home.
Steve Adams
1:56
Yeah... Red Sox make sense. Angels still want bullpen arms. Tigers.

In general I find it borderline impossible to predict where relievers will land. Front offices tend to view a lot of these guys -- especially middle relievers and setup men -- as interchangeable. So much of it comes down to how the rest of the market has played out, who has money left and when.

Sounds like it's time for a second cat!

We've got three!

Do you think the Angels take turns with Jansen and Joyce in the closer role of both are healthy?
Steve Adams
1:57
Think it'll mostly be Jansen, but Joyce will get some opportunities, sure, especially if Jansen's already worked two in a row or tossed like 30 pitches the day before, etc.

Do you think Anthony Rizzo gets a big league deal? He seems like he could fit nicely with my Reds as some CES insurance and another left handed power bat.
Steve Adams
2:00
Yeah I think he'll get a big league deal somewhere. Low cost. One year. Reds kind of work. Twins. Marlins? (He's a FL guy) Jays if they want a LH bat in the 1B/DH mix and just are generally seeking to add depth. And you never know when an injury could pop up to create a 1B need for a club.

Who's the first dodger to hit the 60 day IL? My guess would be Graterol
Steve Adams
2:01
Doesn't really matter the order. Graterol, Gavin Stone, Kyle Hurt, River Ryan and Emmet Sheehan are all going to end up there.

Inter-divison trade idea: Rhys Hoskins for Jeimer Candelario
Steve Adams
2:02
I get the thinking, kind of, but I think the Brewers would prefer the guy who they can be done with this winter. Candy's still signed through 2026.
Steve's Cat
2:03
Steve's cat's doppelganger walking outside a window might be the most random reason an MLBTR chat has ever paused
Steve Adams
2:04
No argument here. That was wild. And I ran out into the front yard in 0-degree weather in a t-shirt and scared the bajeezus out of some random cat, who ran down the street -- then saw my cat on the couch when I went to grab a coat, lol.

Mark Canha or Justin Turner (or heaven forbid Matt Carpenter for the Cubs?  The bench is lacking any thump or experience.
Steve Adams
2:05
Either feels like a good value add for a contender. Cubs certainly could make that work. They currently have a spot committed to Gage Workman, and there's just no way they carry a Rule 5 guy, I don't think

Doesn't Kjerstad to the Pirates almost make too much sense as part of a deal for Keller/Jones?
Steve Adams
2:06
I would've give up Jones for him. Keller, maybe that works, but given how difficult it is to find affordable pitching with a midrotation floor and upside beyond that, I don't think I'd give him up for Kjerstad alone.

Who would you take long term and which order:  Dylan Crews,  James Wood or Wyatt Langford?  Thank you for these chats.   Such awesomeness.
Steve Adams
2:07
Not a knock on the other two, but James Wood for me. And then I guess Crews over Langford.

I wouldn't really fight you on most orders of them. I like all three, but Wood is just a freak with the athleticism, size, speed, opposite field power.
Matt
2:07
You value Keller over Jones? I feel like Jones has more upside and still as 5 (6?) years of cheap control
Steve Adams
2:08
That should say "wouldn't" give up Jones for him.
Typing is hard.

I'm about as bullish a Jared Jones believer as you'll find.

Seriously, what do the Rockies think they're doing? Contending? Rebuilding? Any surprise moves there?
Steve Adams
2:09
The Rockies exist in their own bubble that is entirely dependent on the whims of the sport's most insular and overly optimistic owner. I don't know how they'll win under Dick Monfort.

Ok, I should wrap this up. I'm on X @Adams_Steve and Bluesky @adams-steve.bsky.social if you have more questions.
