Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/12/19

Happy Spring Training!
Of course, I say this as I look out the window at like a gazillion inches of snow outside -- yay St. Paul -- so it doesn't really feel like it, but it's here goshdarnit
Tom
3:14
In my fantasy drafts, guys like Chris Archer and Robbie Ray have been incredibly devalued. Shouldn’t their MLB teams expect a bounce back from these guys with decent track records? Seems the same for all of the Cubs starters as well…
Steve Adams
3:14
I'd bank more on Ray and Archer than any of the Cubs starters -- they're younger and have better track records of missing bats (well, outside Darvish, but his health concerns are greater)

Any news on Marwin? I would have though there would be more interest on him since he can play everywhere
Steve Adams
3:17
I'm sure there's plenty of interest in him -- teams and agencies are just less inclined than ever to leak things.

Boras Corp has a massive free-agent class this winter, headed up by Harper and Keuchel, and they're taking their time with the top guys obviously (I'd include Marwin in that group). Britton, Harvey, Boxberger, Kikuchi all have come off the board for them but there's still a ton left... I think Marwin is one of probably 4-5 remaining guys with an actual chance at a 3+ year deal
3:18
Plus, with so many teams likely wanting him, I doubt they feel the need to try to drum up any interest through the media.
So Many FAs
3:18
With so many FAs still unsigned and Spring Training beginning now, does the price of all FAs drop by the day at this point or are we just adjusting to a new normal?
Steve Adams
3:18
There will be a deluge of cheap one-year deals and minor league contracts and lots of people saying "Wow, that's all [insert player here] could get?!"
Brewers GM Stearns
3:19
(see how I explained in the heading so you don't have to remember to :D ), What do you think are the chances Lawrie breaks camp with the Crew?
Steve Adams
3:20
Ha thanks for that.

I don't think Lawrie has any real chance at cracking the roster to open the season, especially since I think they'll still add someone on a guaranteed deal, but hey, if he crushes it in Triple-A for a couple months, we've seen far more surprising comebacks.

is it b/c Murray signed that the A's don't get any draft pick comp? Or have they stopped that?
Steve Adams
3:22
I believe that's the reasoning, yes. To get a comp pick, a team needs to formally offer a player at least 40% of his slot value and have him reject the deal. The possibility that Murray would choose football and leave Oakland empty-handed is why the pick was tabbed so risky and why so many were shocked to see him taken inside the top 10.

Any chance Machado and Harper miss beginning of season before signing?
Steve Adams
3:22
I don't think that's happening, no.
Guy
3:22
Which 3 guys will get the most playing time in the Rays outfield? Pham, KK, and Meadows?
Steve Adams
3:25
That trio will be lined up as the regulars, and that's my expectation, but you can never fully count on Kiermaier to remain healthy. I'd say Pham logs the most PAs of any Rays outfielder this year. Daniel Robertson will be mixed in there. Guillermo Heredia, too, and later in the year maybe Jesus Sanchez
Ridiculous
3:25
Where do the players get off gall to strike? Because their employers make a ton of cash and they make comparably make a "pittance?" Boo hoo, that's reality for most of us working stiffs too.
Steve Adams
3:27
Most of "us working stiffs" aren't in a 10-billion dollar entertainment industry that literally couldn't function without us. I mean, I don't really see why anyone cares what a professional athlete makes. Do you boycott movies because Leonardo Dicaprio makes like $20-30 million per film?
Padres
3:27
In your opinion... do the Padres sign either of Bryce or Manny?  If not, Marwin or Kuechel? If not, anyone?
Steve Adams
3:28
No one really has any clue where either will sign, so I won't take too many of those questions. But I think it's likelier that the Padres sign Moustakas or trade for Maikel Franco than it is that they sign Harper or Machado.

is the 7 or 8 years 220 million enough money for machado to accept
Steve Adams
3:28
If it were, I have to imagine he'd have signed by now.
Concerned White Sox Fan
3:28
Why aren't more rebuilding teams doing what the Reds have done?
Steve Adams
3:29
The Reds finally started acting after what? Three to four years of being bad? And a large part of the reason they went out into the trade market to get all these players was because the guys they acquired in trades didn't pan out,
Stros
3:30
What are the chances that Forrest Whitley could be in the opening day rotation?
Steve Adams
3:30
He's pitched like 40 innings above A-ball and didn't even log 100 innings in A-ball. I can't see him in the Majors until this summer.
Phillie
3:31
So what happened to the "Stupid money" they were going to spend this winter?
Steve Adams
3:31
Bryce, Manny, Keuchel, Kimbrel and Marwin are all still out there
3:32
I expect the Phillies to sign minimum one and probably two of the bunch (one of Bryce/Manny and then one of Keuchel/Kimbrel)
None of you are right
3:33
Nobody here knows what they are talking about.
Steve Adams
3:33
Oh boy you guys we're all fools
David wright
3:34
Should the Mets sign Gio and use a 6 man rotation this year to limit injuries?
Steve Adams
3:35
Doesn't sound like the worst idea to me, but I can't imagine the Mets offering the most money right now, either.

Then again, Gio's increasingly likely to be one of the guys who takes a contract that makes everyone say "Wait, what?"
Still think he'll get more elsewhere. But Mets could try that with someone else. Buchholz?
Mariners Fan
3:36
Will  Felix be the open starter this year or will it be somebody else ? Because it will be 11 or 12 years in a row?
Steve Adams
3:36
I'd imagine they go Felix out of respect for his place in the organization's history, even though he's clearly not their best starter anymore.
Don’t Mess with the Farhan
3:37
Are the Giants still searching for rotation depth or are they focused on the outfield now?
Steve Adams
3:38
Outfield seems like a greater priority at the moment.
Am I?
