Steve Adams

Ha, we have enough players following us on Twitter that it wouldn't surprise me, but I'd have no way of knowing on this end.
Waitaminute .... Bryce?! Is that you?
Tom

Would deGrom accept 125 over 5 years in addition to his 17m arb money?
Steve Adams
3:40
He has to figure he's going to make $25MM+ in arbitration next season anyway, so you're probably offering less than $100MM over four years of additional money there, which isn't market value in terms of overall guarantee, contract length or annual value for a pitcher of his caliber.

In short -- I don't think that gets it done, no.
Accurate Predictor
3:41
Write this down -- the Orioles will not win the AL East in 2019.

Any chance Harper signs a one year 36 Mil contract?
Steve Adams
3:44
Also, as I said last week -- if Harper or Machado was going to sign for one year, I think it'd be closer to $50MM somewhere. Won't happen, but just saying.

Long story short - who wins the All-Star MVP this year?
Steve Adams
3:44
I mean I think the obvious answer is Bartolo
Chipper
3:45
If Kimbrel takes a 3 year deal, does Atlanta make a move?
Steve Adams
3:45
“He makes everybody a lot better,” said Anthopoulos of Kimbrel. “He’s one of the best closers of all time. I did come out early in the offseason and, not speaking specifically about him, but [said] our payroll, our model, I don’t know that us spending big, elite dollars on a reliever — length, the term and all that — I don’t know that that model works for us.”

Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos about three weeks ago.
3:46
I don't think they'll give him the annual dollars he's seeking
Free Agency
3:46
Is this the new normal going forward?
Steve Adams
3:46
Until there's a new CBA in place, I'd say so
Chris
3:47
Are the Minnesota Twins content with their bullpen or will they make an addition before Spring Training games start?
Steve Adams
3:48
Sounds like the only deals they'll hand out are of the minor league variety. Not sure why they feel they can't boot Michael Reed to sign Madson or Romo for a year at cheap money, when Reed is almost certainly not going to make the roster anyway, but then again I find their entire strategy baffling. Shrug.
Bryce Harper
3:48
I'm the most overrated player since...
Steve Adams
3:49
You will never find me saying a 26-year-old with 30 career WAR and an NL MVP Award under his belt is overrated. Sorry.
Minor League Deals
3:49
How much do those minor league deals with invites get?
Steve Adams
3:50
Varies from deal to deal. Most of the established guys get something like $1.5-2.5MM in guarantees if they make the club, plus incentives. They don't make anything during Spring Training.
Strike
3:50
Will Trout’s FA contract decide be what decides whether a strike happens?
Steve Adams
3:54
No. People focus so much on Harper, Machado, Trout, whoever -- the top guys -- in all of this when it's much more about the fact that there is no middle class in baseball anymore. Guys like Asdrubal signing for $3MM... basically no one wanting to offer a Sergio Romo type an MLB deal, etc. The top stars will get paid; the lack of interest in them is problematic from the union side, and it should be, but it's going to piss the MLBPA off equally, if not more, if Gio Gonzalez gets like $4MM or something.

3:54
Will free agents still on the market be hurt even more by the poor performance of late signers last year?
Steve Adams
3:55
In many ways it's already hurt them. All those late signees took one-year deals, which further flooded this offseason's market.
Mac Attack
3:55
Any RHP Padres should pursue in FA that would be a legit 3rd starter? Their current options seem very LHP-dominant
Steve Adams
3:56
There aren't many (any) quality right-handers remaining. Could roll the dice on Buchholz or Ervin Santana rebounding, though. I could see either as a viable mid-rotation arm if they're healthier than in '18
Stan
3:56
Is ozuna in stl after 2019?
Steve Adams
3:57
Lots of young OF options in house -- seems like a decent chance they stick internal there ad look to spend elsewhere
Fred
3:58
Will we see another FA Spring Training Camp???
Steve Adams
3:58
There won't be one this year, no.
Joey
3:59
Could the Giants land both Adam Jones and Bryce Harper?
Steve Adams
4:00
I don't see Adam Jones getting more than $5MM -- and probably less than that. So sure, they could.
Florida Marlins
4:01
Will Marlins be the worst team in baseball?
Steve Adams
4:01
I'll take the Orioles in that category, but the Marlins will be quite bad.
Owners
4:02
We've learned from our past mistakes. We won't be giving out 10 year deals anymore. They have never worked out. MLBPA can be angry all they want but this is just smart business.
Steve Adams
4:03
This is the most common, and also the least-insightful and least-nuanced take I see on the current strife between ownership and management. It wholly ignores the lack of a middle class in free agency, focuses only on the top two free agents and completely disregards the fact that Harper and Machado are 5 years younger than most previous 10-year recipients.
Vic
4:04
Could the Padres sign Mike Moustakas and Buchholz?
Steve Adams
4:04
Seems completely reasonable.
