No, and I don't think most people realize how expensive that'd be for the Phillies. I'm working on writing something on this now (not Phillies-specific, but they'll be mentioned)... it'd cost them about $41MM to sign a player to a contract with a $25MM AAV right now, thanks to luxury taxes. If you assume those guys ask for higher AAVs to compensate for a short-term deal, you could be pushing upwards of $50MM in 2024 cost, plus the loss of a draft pick (for Snell or Bellinger), plus having their top pick dropped 10 spots in next summer's draft for exceeding the tax threshold by more than $40MM.
1:31
Maybe things will eventually get to the point where one of those guys is there at a three-year rate where the Phillies feel they can't pass, but I don't think we're there on Feb. 13

Is my team’s front office ever going to decide to put together a remotely competitive team?
Steve Adams
1:34
I don't think Dick Monfort is ever going to break free of his wildly insular ways to build out and modernize the front office to a point where they're regular contenders. The Rockies continually promote from within, have one of the smallest front office and analytics groups around, etc.

It's not that they don't have any good people there, but they're just not up to par with other clubs around the game in terms of personnel, modern practices and processes, etc.

Do you think Snell and Montgomery’s markets are being subdued because next year’s FA pitching crop looks so robust?
Steve Adams
1:36
I think modern teams just hate going seven-plus years on a pitcher, which Snell wants, and teams probably like Monty more at 4-5 years than the likely six years he's justifiably seeking.

I get the frustration from fans, but we're what? Five years or so removed from when everyone was asking these same questions about Bryce Harper and Manny Machado?

This offseason has sucked to follow, but in the end I still expect most of the big names to get paid.

Can I get Rosario, Peralta, Duvall, or Pham for 5 million?
Steve Adams
1:37
I think the Padres could sign Eddie Rosario or David Peralta for $5MM or less.

Adames or Chapman is more likely at this point

Any chance the jays sign Bellinger or Chapman? Or do they jays believe a Kiermaier, Varsho, Springer outfield with IKF/Schnieder/Biggio/Espinal at second and third is good enough to get to the playoffs?
Steve Adams
1:38
I still like them as a landing spot for Chapman. Bellinger could maybe fit but it's not as clean.

1:39
Do you really see them resigning Bregman or Tucker?  Could they trade them to get prospects?
Steve Adams
1:39
I don't think the Astros will extend Bregman or Tucker. I also don't think they'll trade either for prospects when they're clearly built to win right now.
1:40
Bregman will get a QO this offseason, reject and probably sign elsewhere. Tucker has a couple years to go, but it sure seems like he's headed down a similar path. Owner Jim Crane will need to change his aversion to larger-scale contracts to keep guys like that. The Astros haven't gone more than six years under him and haven't topped $150MM.

Would the Dodgers have any interest in Liam Hendriks?  He many not pitch this year but a two year contract with player incentives sounds like a good deal for both sides. What do you think?
Steve Adams
1:41
Sure the Dodgers probably have some interest in that type of deal, but plenty of other clubs would as well. And at this point Hendriks would come with a 110% luxury hit for the Dodgers (as would any free agent).... that's perhaps not ideal for a guy who won't even pitch for you this season.

Any chance I end up back in Minnesota?
Steve Adams
1:42
The Twins already have more LH outfielders than they need. I don't think that's a good use of their limited resources, no.

Will DL Hall win the CY young in the next 3 years as the Brewers ace?
Steve Adams
1:43
I think he's likelier to just become a high-end Josh Hader-y reliever, but sure there's always that 95th percentile outcome where he not only sticks as a starter but reins in his command and becomes an ace.

Do you ever do rebuilds on MLB The Show and just go to town rebuilding teams? I bet you'd be be great at it.
Steve Adams
1:44
I haven't seriously played any installments of The Show since 2006, haha
1:45
But you can always, without fail, take Marlon Byrd near the end of a fantasy draft and trade him straight up for Ken Griffey Jr. in '06, and as long as Griffey stays on the field it's a steal. Useful pro tip, I know, I know.

1:45
Odds Orioles extend Burnes?
Steve Adams
1:46
They still haven't given out a multi-year deal to any player since the rebuild began. Burnes is going to be looking for $250MM+ and quite possibly $300MM+ with a typical Burnes-ish season. I don't see any realistic scenario, no.

No daily "Dylan Cease" update today?  I have him going to the Dodgers after either Yamamoto or Glasnow goes down early, and for the rest of the season.
Steve Adams
1:48
Daily? I did a post on him yesterday after Getz spoke about him on record, and that was the first time he'd been tagged in a post on MLBTR since Feb. 4. It was Jan. 28 before that.

I don't know why you'd equate Yamamoto's injury outlook to that of Glasnow, but sure if the Dodgers have more SP injuries, they'll be right there in the market. They probably will be even without injuries. They're always going to look into the top names available.

Odds that my Cards are quietly in on Snell or Montgomery?
Steve Adams
1:49
Very, very slim
Ed
1:49
Will Julio Urías get an MLB contract? If so, what will he get with his struggles last season and his legal problems?
Steve Adams
1:49
Doubt it. Legal process still has to play out, then the MLB investigation.

Is Anthony Franco going to start doing chats again?
Steve Adams
1:51
Anthony chats weekly with our Trade Rumors Front Office subscribers. At some point we'll probably get more frequent chats going on the main site again, but right now it's just Mark and me.

Does Michael A. Taylor beat his last contract?
Steve Adams
1:51
Think that was 2/9, so yeah I expect him to do better
Sad Reds Fan
1:52
Could you see the Reds attempting to lock up any of their young players again soon? May be savvy move, but none are without question marks still and reds tend to prefer the freedom of not being tied to long contracts
Steve Adams
1:53
They did it with Hunter Greene. I don't see why they wouldn't be gauging the willingness of Matt McLain, Andrew Abbott, Noelvi Marte, Spencer Steer and others.

1:53
Would you rather have Soler or Garver for the next couple of years when factoring in the value of their respective contracts?
Steve Adams
1:54
I lean slightly toward Garver, as he's on the shorter deal and can also probably still get behind the plate a handful of games if you need. But I thought both contracts were pretty reasonable
