Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/20/18

Steve Adams

The free agents. The contracts. Huzzah
It has begun
3:23
Only like 4 months late. Much like my own lateness with today's chat -- apologies!
Joe
3:23
Is Minnesota still adding players or are they done?
Steve Adams
3:24
I don't feel like they can just add Jake Odorizzi and say their rotation is set now. They're still looking for starters.
Steve B
3:24
Logan Morrison to the White Sox...why? Why not?
Steve Adams
3:26
I'm on board the LoMo to a lot of places train; if you can get him on a reasonable two-year deal or, somehow, a one-year commitment -- I think he's one of the better value plays in free agency. ChiSox would be fine with me. They may want to give Delmonico more of those DH at-bats, but they should be able to find ABs for him in left field and at DH at times.
Charles Keane
3:26
Do the Padres look into the FA Pictching and who?
Steve Adams
3:27
I don't think so. They have 8-9 guys vying for rotation spots as it is, clearly viewed Hosmer as an exception in terms of free-agent spending, and didn't spend anything beyond a couple million a winter ago when they had fewer MLB-ready options.
Royals
3:27
Are we out of the race for moose?
Steve Adams
3:28
I don't think they're going to spend much on anyone. They, like the Padres, seemed to view Hoz as an exception -- as opposed to their pursuit of him signaling that they'd spend significant money elsewhere should they miss out.
3:29
Plus, at this point, they're in line to get 3 extra picks at the end of the first round. If you want to rebuild, that type of draft pool is a hell of a start.
Corey Dickerson
3:30
What uniform am I wearing next year?
Steve Adams
3:32
O's have been looking for a LHH OF all offseason. White Sox would make some sense there as well. Rangers, perhaps. I have to imagine there are 5-6 teams with real trade interest, especially with two years of control remaining.
Oklahomabrave
3:32
Do the Braves make any trades or sign Moose?
Steve Adams
3:33
Really doubt it on Moose -- even if he's taking a one-year deal, they're punting a pick for that one year and likely not contending. I can definitely see them shuffling the pitching mix up a bit in Spring Training.... they have some fringe 40-man guys who could be sent elsewhere, and their murky bullpen scene makes them an easy spot to identify for relievers that aren't likely to make their current clubs... maybe some out of options guys land there.
3:34
Could very well see someone take a chance on Mauricio Cabrera's 102 mph velo in a small trade, even though he walked like 90% of the guys he faced last year.
Jeff
3:34
Cubs sign LoMo and put him in left field. Crazy?
Steve Adams
3:34
Don't see that
Nick
3:35
Corey Dickerson seems like a fit in Det.
Steve Adams
3:35
Would make plenty of sense as well.
Sergio
3:35
Who is more likely to end up in Atlanta Renfroe or Dickerson?
Steve Adams
3:36
I mean, they went out of their way to clear an easy spot for Acuna to come up early this year with the Kemp trade... obviously you're not necessarily "blocking" him in the long run by acquiring one of those guys, but I'd be surprised if they acquired someone to plug into that OF vacancy on even a semi-regular basis
Charlie
3:36
Which first basemen do the royals get?
Steve Adams
3:37
I don't think they're going to sign one at all, and if they do, it'll be a small one-year deal for an Adam Lind type. I imagine they'll just give Hunter Dozier a chance to show he can hit there though.

Have trade talks about me stopped? Are Marlins askimg for too much?
Steve Adams
3:38
They have definitely not stopped, they just haven't really progressed. They're within their rights to ask the moon; he's insanely valuable.
Chase Headley?
3:38
Am I staying in San Diego? There seemed to be a lot of chatter a few months ago that has evaporated
Steve Adams
3:39
At this point, I don't know who's going to take that contract from them. I'd guess he stays, which seems fine; he's not a $13MM player on the open but he's hardly a negative-value asset. Could play his way into marginal trade value this summer.

Arrieta signs for 3 years, 75 mil.  Why or why not?
Steve Adams
3:40
Think too many teams would be in on him at that rate for it to be the stopping point in negotiations
Bob
3:40
Do you think the Marlins will sign anyone like Melky  or Jon Jay?
Steve Adams
3:42
There doesn't appear to be a huge market for either player right now, so if the Fish shed a bit more payroll, sure I can see them reinvesting a bit of it in an OF. Jay has Miami ties, and some of the stuff written about "Project Wolverine" seemed to suggest trying to market those types -- though not sure people are going to line up to see a guy who played college ball there more than a decade ago.

Miami ties notwithstanding, Jay makes some sense just so they don't feel a need to rush all of Magneuris Sierra, Braxton Lee, Lewis Brinson, etc.

Brandon Phillips.  Do I get a starting gig at 2nd this year.  Where shall I pack my bags to?  I’m waiting at the airport.
Steve Adams
3:43
Bench role somewhere is likelier

Greg Holland a possibility for Halos?
Steve Adams
3:45
They haven't really demonstrated an inclination to give up draft dollars or to spend heavily on bullpen parts this offseason. He'd be signable while remaining under the luxury tax for them, but still don't know that they're a good fit.

That said, there aren't many teams that seem like obvious candidates to shell out $10MM+ annually for a QO'ed reliever at this point in the offseason.
Cobb, Alex

Am I kicking myself in the butt for not taking the rumored 3y/$42M offer early in the offseason?
Steve Adams
3:47
If that offer was truly on the table -- hasn't been disputed by any reporters out of Chicago, either -- I think he should've taken it. Maybe you try to push it up to 4/48, but based on the numbers being thrown around in connection to him, seems like his camp has long had its sights set higher.

I've written on numerous occasions that I think his asking price was utterly bananas, though. 3/42 would've seemed like a fine deal for him early in the offseason to me
