The best suggestion for anti-tanking that I've seen is still that the first overall pick goes to the top non-playoff team. So the first round is best-to-worst record among the non-playoff clubs, followed by the remaining playoff teams. Could go back to worst-to-best record for subsequent rounds, or keep that same format for the second round before reverting to worst-to-best if they really want to encourage teams to play to win.

Owners would say that impossibly stacks the deck against teams like the Pirates, who are loath to spend any money in free agency, though.

What would a long term contract for Jaun Soto look like? 10/400 or 12/500?
Steve Adams
3:20
Soto might earn something in the vicinity of $70MM for his remaining three arbitration seasons alone. (He's projected at 16.2MM this year plus two more raises that figure to be enormous.)

The best players on the market right now are signing in the $36MM range, and I expect he'd want to top that in terms of a per-season value on his would-be free-agent years. Also have to look at 13 or 14 years as the standard, length-wise, on this type of deal.

So something like 3/65 for his remaining arb seasons and then say another 10 years at a minimum of $37MM+ ... 13 and 435 is probably on the low end of what his camp feels is a needle-moving offer. Pushing for 500 over 14-15 years would make sense as a pure precedent-setter.

As a fan of a tanking team, the Orioles, I just wish MLB had a way to get the top draft picks to the show quicker.  I understand development, but if the number 1 pick in the NFL can start from day one, then Adley can start in Baltimore and at least provide more fan interest
Steve Adams

Starting Rutschman, or basically any 1-1 draft pick, right in the Majors is a pretty surefire way to watch a kid look overmatched and get trounced by superior competition.

The gap between professional baseball and college baseball is just larger than the gap between professional football and college football.

HeySteve, it's really me! What can I expect as an extension or in FA? I'm worth as.much as Seager and Correa, right?Love this website!!
Steve Adams
3:24
Odd for someone who loves this web site to not follow us on Twitter, Trea :)
3:25
To the commenter's point, though -- Turner is as good or better, but he's also set to reach free agency at a later stage. He could still flirt with $300MM, but I think Turner's eventual deal will fall shy of Seager/Correa, who can point to age (27) as a major sell for interested teams.

Do the Royals have Witt Jr., Pratto and Melendez on the opening day roster? And how long before they bring up Lacey and their other young pitchers?
Steve Adams
3:27
I think Witt Jr. will make the Opening Day roster. Pratto depends somewhat on what happens with Carlos Santana. Melendez, I have a hard time seeing just because you want him to get everyday at-bats.

Asa Lacy had a terrible season and isn't near big-league ready yet. He walked 17% of his opponents in Class-A. 2022 will be a huge year for him, development-wise.

Houser for Voit?
Steve Adams
3:28
The controllable fourth starter has more value, to me.

Do you think I’m a first ballet HOFer?
Steve Adams
3:29
I think he's a Hall of Famer, and I look forward to the day when we can stop distinguishing between "first-ballot" guys and others. You're a Hall of Famer or you're not.

Have seen rumblings around a Noelvi for Chapman move. What are we needing to add to go up a notch to Matt Olson?
Steve Adams
3:32
Dipoto has plainly said he has no interest in moving his very best prospects. I assume the "rumblings" you're referencing means Ryan Divish's report that the A's would likely ask for Noelvi Marte in return for Chapman.

That may well be true, but it doesn't mean the Mariners would consider doing it. Unless the A's drop the asking price, I don't think it works. And adding Olson certainly isn't going to drop the ask.
It kindve sucks
3:33
That the A's have a solid core of talent and the owner is CHOOSING not to compete in 2022
Steve Adams
3:33
Pretty much. Rough year for A's fans.

I read that Preller really wanted Gallo before he was traded to NYY. Would Gallo and Torres for Cronenworth make sense for both teams?
Steve Adams
3:34
Preller seems to want every ex-Ranger, but he doesn't want Gallo that badly.

Would Yoelqui and Burger get Freddy Peralta?
Steve Adams
3:34
Nope.

Zach Greinke in a Tigers uniform as the leader of this young staff for the next few years. Is that crazy???
Steve Adams
3:35
Doesn't seem crazy to me. Greinke should be getting more love. The dude can still pitch, and his 2021 numbers were dragged down pretty hard by a bad three starts to close out the season. If someone signs Greinke for a year, it'll be a good deal.

Ok, I've got to wrap up for the week. Thanks for chatting, and, as always, sorry for all the questions I couldn't get to. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve for more if you like, though most of my downtime these days is spent on "clueless new dad duty," haha, so my Twitter interactions have been a bit low of late. I'll still always get to any questions when I eventually see them.
