Kyle Gibson or Jose Quintana, I guess? And yeah, both should/will get a big league deal.
Jays in 43 parks
1:28
Jays Barger & Jiminez for Astros Caratini. Who says no?
Steve Adams
1:28
I doubt the Jays would want to give up six years of Addison Barger OR Leo Jimenez for Caratini, let alone both.
Robbie Baseball
1:28
If the Jays are in last place in July, which veteran players do you think would survive the inevitable fire sale?
Steve Adams
1:30
The really expensive ones (or the ones on long-term significant deals, anyway): Andres Gimenez, Jose Berrios, Anthony Santander, George Springer.

Vlad, Bichette, Bassitt, Scherzer, Chad Green, Erik Swanson, Kevin Gausman, Daulton Varsho, Alejandro Kirk could all be varying levels of available if the Jays are out of it and jump into sell mode.

Will Ty France be the starting 1B on opening day? Why won’t they commit to Miranda?
Steve Adams
1:32
I expect France to be the guy, yeah. There'll still be plenty of ABs for Miranda between 1B/3B/DH. Injuries will happen. France's deal isn't guaranteed so if he struggles in April/May, he could be out the door before too long.

Signing a guy with his track record on a non-guaranteed $1MM deal makes perfectly good sense to me, especially with last year's nosedive in production aligned perfectly with his fractured heel (which he rushed back from after less than two weeks on the IL)

Chances Logan Webb wins the Cy Young this year having Verlander there to help him?
Steve Adams
1:33
I don't think it has much to do with Verlander's presence, but Webb is a viable Cy Young candidate in any given season. He's one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Electric Boogy

Suarez and cash considerations for Kjerstad, who says no?
Steve Adams
1:34
The Orioles, emphatically.
1:35
If Suarez is moved, I wouldn't expect him to net a big league-ready player of much note (unless it's someone on a comparable contract) -- Kjerstad is the type of player who goes into a Dylan Cease type of trade. Not Robert Suarez with a looming opt-out.

It's time to pony up for Montgomery right? Help ease AZ's salary requirements and give up some nobody prospect?
Steve Adams
1:38
If the Mets wanted to add to the rotation, they could just sign Kyle Gibson or Jose Quintana and not have to deal with the haggling over how much dead money they take on. It sounds like they have little appetite to make a season-long acquisition as a bandaid for Manaea (who might miss like 2-4 starts) and Montas (who could be back late May).

Even if the Montas absence is longer, I just don't think they're going to add another No. 4 type to a roster that's already full of them. Especially not when doing so comes with a 110% tax.

My time with Stanton out if I have a big power spring?
Steve Adams
1:39
Suppose with a big enough spring, he could get a look. But he's not on the 40-man roster yet, and he K'ed at a 37% clip in Double-A last year, so I'm not at all convinced he'd even stay afloat versus MLB pitching yet -- let alone thrive
1:40
Given the sheer volume of questions on the subject:

I put a roughly 0% chance on Vladimir Guerrero Jr. being traded before Opening Day.
For Rafael Devers, I'd put a slightly more optimistic 0.001%.

So ... that's my stance on that mountain of questions, haha. grinning

What are you thoughts on Seattle signing Rowdy Tellez? How do you envision the M’s using him & what type of camp battle is he in for?
Steve Adams
1:43
Just strikes me primarily as a depth play and little more. He'll vie for 1B/DH at-bats. Luke Raley can play some corner OF. If there's a Robles/Julio/Arozarena injury, this gives the M's some cheap cover. Raley can move to an OF corner and Rowdy/Solano can platoon at 1B.
Bryce Eldridge
1:43
Will I get called up within the first 50 games this year?
Bruce
1:43
Any chance Eldridge cracks the opening day roster?
Steve Adams
1:45
Eldridge turned 20 in October and has 17 games above A-ball -- nine in Double-A and eight in Triple-A. He hit well in AA and looked overmatched in a tiny AAA sample.

I don't think it's categorically impossible that he breaks camp with the team or is up within the season's first month, but I'd bet more on him debuting midsummer or later.

1:45
Caleb Durbin or Luisangel Acuna to have more at bats this season?
Steve Adams
1:46
Not sure either gets a ton but Durbin has the easier path for me.

When a player gets traded with multiple years remaining & different salaries each year does the acquiring team get a new AAV for future CBT calculations?  e.g. $23m/$20m/$20m Does the new team get a $20m or $21m (63/3 or 40/2)
Steve Adams
1:47
Latest CBA stipulates that the new team is taxed based on the remaining AAV. So for instance, Darragh and I were just talking about Andrew Benintendi earlier today (not that anyone's taking that contract anytime soon). His 5/75 deal is slightly backloaded, such that there's three years and $47.5MM remaining. If he were traded, he'd have a $15.833MM CBT hit for the new team rather than the original $15MM hit.

hot take: Caminero is an All Star this year
Steve Adams
1:48
Totally viable to me. Junior Caminero is going to be very good in TB

Since Doval lost his closer role, could you see the Giants trading him?
Steve Adams
1:48
Definitely, but it seemed likelier earlier in the offseason than it does now with spring games underway

Game 7 of the World Series, bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, what pitcher vs. hitter battle would you want to see most?
Steve Adams
1:49
Shohei Ohtani vs. Shohei Ohtani
Realistically, I love watching Juan Soto hit, and while Ben Joyce isn't going to be closing down the World Series (barring a trade), seeing him chuck 105 mph heaters against Soto for all the marbles would be tons of fun.

I can DH sometiems with Stanton out.  I can catch once or twice a week and play 1B once or twice a week.  Can you see me getting 400-500 AB?
Steve Adams
1:52
I doubt that's the plan, but if there are enough injuries, sure, it's not all that hard to envision a scenario where he gets 400 PAs. He'd have to hit a whole lot better than he did in his '24 debut, but he's mashed all the way through the minors so it's not crazy to think he could be an above-average bat in a semi-regular role.

Yankees didn't start him behind the plate even once in the majors last year, though, and they have a lot of catching depth, so not sure I buy him catching 1-2 times per week.
Hitter question
1:52
Arraez is the answer there.  Nobody puts the ball in play better.  Soto will probably walk.
Steve Adams
1:53
Thought about Arraez. But Soto's my favorite hitter to watch in general. Arraez would be fun though. There's no real right or wrong answer.

If you want to watch Luis Campusano against Danny Coulombe -- hey, more power to you.

When a FA signs a deal, when is the signing team eligible to trade the player? You mentioned Santander as a possible trade piece for the Jays if the wheels come off. So, when can the Jays trade Santander. I think clubs used to have to wait until June 1? This can't come up often, but I'm still curious.
