Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/4/25

Probably, but I can also just see a world where he's non-tendered. Sanchez doesn't hit lefties at all, has poor plate discipline/swing decisions and subpar contact rates. There's huge raw power there and he can hit some damn impressive home runs, but the overall package is limited and I think it's fairly telling that a "tear it all to the ground" Marlins club still hasn't traded him.

Could Rizzo be a potential fit for the Twins 1B hole? He could be the strong side of a platoon with Miranda / shift him to DH and provide much better defense at first. I would imagine he'll be available on a cheap 1 yr deal as well
Steve Adams
2:04
Makes sense, sure. Any of the cheap 1Bs do. Rizzo, Justin Turner. Could do a minors deal with Ty France for some depth in camp.

Luis castillo and cash for westburg?
Steve Adams
2:06
Can't see any chance the O's give up Westburg in a Castillo deal. I mean, maybe if the Mariners paid the whole contract down, ha. (Not that they need to do so in order to move Castillo -- just saying Westburg is very good.)

Fwiw, Castillo has a no-trade clause through 2025 as well.

That 3 / $70M the Mets offered Pete is starting to look like a pretty good offer.
Steve Adams
2:07
Only because we don't know what else is out there. I thought he'd do three with an opt-out from back in November, but I assumed the three would be closer to 85-90 guaranteed.

We'll see what comes to pass. We also don't know how the 70 was structured (was it frontloaded? backloaded? that's critical), nor do we know specifics about any deferrals. The number itself is less telling than the structure.

I’d rather have Alonso than Rizzo, Turner or France.
Steve Adams
2:08
Sure, but I don't think the Twins are pulling $80MM+ out of thin air (although that would be hilarious and rule ... I would love to see some random team just fly in off the top rope to sign Pete or Bregman)

There HAS to be a market for Yoshida if the Sox eat some contract, right? I still think the M’s could use him in a smaller deal for a bullpen arm or prospect.
Steve Adams
2:09
I don't really agree that there has to be a market for him. I think he'd get like one year and $6-8MM as a free agent. He's owed $54MM over three years.
Brewers
2:09
____ should be the Brewers opening day Closer. Will that person be traded by the trade deadline or next offseason?
Steve Adams
2:10
Trevor Megill, and no, he's controlled through 2027. Megill is really good.

What do we do with the plethora of catching prospects we have, could a big trade be on the horizon? Possibly next offseason when Bloom takes over?
Steve Adams
2:11
See how Ivan Herrera handles the full-time gig this season and if they're not satisfied with the defense, gauge trade interest? I'm not convinced they see Herrera as the long-term fit. They like Jimmy Crooks a lot, too. We'll see how it plays out though. Maybe Herrera makes some good strides defensively. I think he'll hit.

robert suarez to orioles, for Heston Kjerstad and Brandon Young?
Steve Adams
2:13
Doubt the O's do Kjerstad for Suarez. He's owed $10MM and can opt out at season's end. So any team acquiring Suarez is basically hoping he pitches well for one year and his $10MM, because if he picks up the two-year, $16MM player option, it's likely because he got hurt/regressed with his results.

It makes him a difficult trade chip, and certainly a hard player to actually get a meaningful return for.

I like the idea of Kjerstad headlining a Cease package though.

It fluctuates throughout. 1100 right now

Could the Giants still sign Alonso and trade wade jr?
Steve Adams
2:15
Payroll-wise, there's no reason they can't. If they're trading Wade, then they could sign Pete and stay under the tax as well.

Posey's comments cast pretty serious doubt on his willingness/desire to do that, though.

Any hope for us????, like anytime soon
Steve Adams

Farm is looking increasingly stacked. Kiley McDaniel just put out a new piece on his top 10 players from each team over at ESPN, and I think the White Sox and Dodgers were the only two teams who saw all of their top 10 land within his top-200 overall MLB prospects
And Kiley is awesome at what he does

Do you still live in Minnesota? Why? You don't have to man.
Steve Adams
2:17
We moved out of state for four years! But families are here, and once we wanted to start having kids, we wanted the families close by.
2:18
Minnesota is great, but I hate the snow. Which does take up like five months of the year, ha. But food/beer/entertainment/nature/cost of living/parks/wildlife etc -- all top notch
Mike
2:18
Do you believe Jerry Dipoto when he says this was the plan, or do you think they had a plan they couldn't execute and it threw off the rest of the off season?
Steve Adams
2:19
He said before the offseason even started that his plan was to hold all his starters. I think it's fair to question whether they should've more seriously looked at trading a Woo or Miller, but that's easier to say when we don't know what kind of offers people were putting out there.

The Phillies' ask of one of those guys for Alec Bohm, for instance, was insane.
Ramon Laureano to O's, per Ken Rosenthal
One year, $4MM
2:20
More and more outfielders to Baltimore. My Kjerstad/Cease framework lives on. Ha.
5 months of hating where you live?
2:20
That sounds awful.
Steve Adams
2:21
Nah rare we get snow for all 5 months. Just a 5-month period where it's possible. I don't mind at all when it's cold and there's no snow. And I like snow at the holidays. And my 3-year-old loves snow, so I'm coming back around on it
Cubs

If we disappoint again, would Counsell's seat start to get a little toasty? We brought him in to get a ring.
Steve Adams
2:21
Two years into a five-year contract that pays him more than any other manager? Nope
MJ
2:21
I fail to see why anyone is mad you posted the most shocking trade in NBA history on this site.  Who cares?  What's the big deal?!
Steve Adams
2:22
People look at things differently. I respect that some were irked by it. It's their right -- again, especially if they're a paying subscriber and felt that was an ad. It's not something that would personally bother me, but that doesn't render frustration from our audience any less valid, and it's all feedback we take into account for future planning.
Kenley Jansen
2:22
I still have some gas left in the tank, why hasn't anyone signed me?
Steve Adams
2:23
Someone will sign him in the next couple weeks and probably get a good value
