Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/8/22
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams

Greetings all
Rockies just formally announced the previously reported Bud Black extension.
Nate R
2:03
best guess: Over/Under 10.5 games missed in the regular season due to the lockout
Steve Adams
2:04
I think I'm more pessimistic about the chances than some of my colleagues here at MLBTR. I do think they'll miss games, but I'd set the O/U in that same range. I'll say they lose a week of games or so. Hope I'm wrong.

Tyler O'Neill - flash in the pan, or in the MVP voting for the next few years?
Steve Adams
2:07
I think this past season is about as realistically good as you can expect him to be if he's going to K around 30-31% without offsetting some of that with walks.

I don't want to call his 2021 a flash in the pan, as I think there's a lot of legitimate good that is sustainable, but I think this was like a 90th percentile year for him and we'll see him settle in more as a just a power threat in the corners with good defense and probably some eventual OBP questions. (Again, barring a spike in BB%)

Why did the Kings trade me?
Steve Adams
2:07
There was a chat over at Hoops Rumors today! You're asking the wrong guy, ah

2:08
Once they get this lockout do you think player movement will be crazy?
Steve Adams
2:08
I do! There are still 100-plus Major League free agents who need homes, perhaps some 10-20 trades that'll get completed, arbitration cases to resolve, etc.
Jacob M
2:09
What are the odds the Cubs actually re-sign Rizzo once free agency resumes?
Steve Adams
2:09
I saw Levine's report, and hey, if the price is going to just be some mediocre two-year deal, maybe it happens. I haven't been expecting it, but the market for 1Bs isn't going to be robust. It's possible, but I'd still bet on the field rather than him re-signing at Wrigley.

Do you think Edman can play enough D at SS to get Gormans bat in at 2b
Steve Adams
2:10
Edman seems like he could play more or less anywhere and not be terrible. I don't think Paul DeJong is a lost cause, though, so we'll see how Gorman eventually mixes into the equation. Not a bad problem to have, and injuries tend to help sort these things out.
2:11
Not that you wish that on anyone, but it's a reality of the game.

Upton for kimbrel solves a need for each team who says no?
Steve Adams
2:12
Upton is making like $12MM and has far less value. White Sox can and should swap Kimbrel for a veteran who's a lot more useful and whose salary balances out more neatly if they're intent on moving him (which seems to be the case)

No chance Kershaw isn’t a ranger or dodger by the end of this, right?
Steve Adams
2:13
He could retire!
But yeah, I think it's one of those two.

2:13
Best guess on Correa destination - Yankees, Astros, or the field?
Steve Adams
2:13
I'll take the field.

2:13
Not saying I am going to make another big FA splash once the lockout is over... but if I do... is it IF, OF, or pitching?
Steve Adams
2:14
Depends on your definition of "splash," but the Mets will add a credible starter to round out the top five.
Twins
2:15
Can we shock the world and sign Correa say 10 years at 34 million.
Steve Adams
2:16
They *can*, yes. They're like $40MM+ from their record payroll right now (which is about 130MM), and they only have $67MM on the '23 books and $27MM on the '24 books.

I don't think they will, nor do I think it'll be seriously considered -- but in terms of whether they simply have the available resources to do so, sure. Their front office did a nice job of cleaning up the long-term payroll outlook in the first few years on the job.
2:17
And hey, just because I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell they really do it -- doesn't mean it can't happen. I'd have given a similar answer about Manny Machado and the Padres in 2018, ha.
Chip
2:17
There's no real chance Freeman leaves the Braves, right?
Steve Adams
2:18
Of course there is. They've had years to extend him and didn't. They had an exclusive negotiating window with him after the season. Didn't sign him. They had weeks of open-market bidding for him pre-lockout. Didn't sign him.

I still think the likeliest scenario is he lands back in Atlanta, but there's absolutely a chance the Braves just won't go to the lengths that another team (e.g. Dodgers, Yankees) will in order to sign him.

2:18
Will a player like Joc Pederson get a full time role with a competitor this season or will he have to settle for a part time role? I guess a rebuilding team would love to have him and then trade him to a contender before the deadline.
Steve Adams
2:20
I don't think any contender is signing Joc to give him 600+ PAs. A rebuilding club might -- that's basically what the Cubs were in 2021 -- but he's not going to fetch all that much in return on a trade. Joc's fun, but he's a platoon corner outfielder at this point.

2:21
Do you think Brendan Rodgers is the starting 2B or SS for the Rockies this year? Will Connor Joe lead off again?
Steve Adams
2:22
Seems like they prefer him at 2B. I don't fully buy Joe as an actual regular there, but if he can match last year's walk rate, sure he'd have the OBP to hit at the top of the lineup. I'm expecting some regression there, but hopefully he proves me wrong. Dude is a good story.

2:23
Does José Ramírez ever play as a Guardian?
Steve Adams
2:23
Midseason trade or a deal next winter feels likelier to me than an immediate post-lockout trade.

2:23
Where could voit be traded if the Yankees trade for olson (or sign freeman or rizzo)
Steve Adams
2:25
If they trade for Olson, he could potentially go back to the A's as part of the deal. Brewers would work at 1B. Braves, if Freeman signs elsewhere. Lots of NL clubs will be looking for bats to fill some DH time (assuming the NL DH comes about).

I don't think the return will be huge, coming off the injuries and down year (to say nothing of a decent arb salary), but it's pretty easy to envision a bunch of teams being  willing to give up a little bit.

2:25
Will I have Kiermaiers locker when opening day rolls around?
Steve Adams
2:26
Could go Arozarena, Margot, Phillips/Meadows in the OF and keep Lowe in AAA, but yes I think Kiermaier will be traded post-lockout
