Cubs in 2020

Who is the 5th starter, Chatwood or Mills?
Steve Adams
5:08
I expect Chatwood to open the year in that role

In the next couple of offseasons for the Jay's, assuming Ryu performs consistent with his career norms and Pearson develops into a top 3 rotation piece, do the Jay's target more high end pitching or hope that another arm develops from the system and use that cash to address a position player. I'll hang up and listen. Thanks.
Steve Adams

Their hope is certainly that Pearson emerges sooner rather than later to give them another high-end arm. But they're not going to limit themselves, and the general context of the market will drive who they target and to what extent. The Twins just signed Josh Donaldson because they felt the value and price point aligned. The Jays aren't going to sit here in March and say "We won't sign a pitcher next winter" or "We need to sign one at all costs." Teams aren't going to wedge themselves into such specific boxes.

Why should Royals take on Mateo?  If Mondesi is not ready to start the year Nicky Lopez can slide over to ss, but Whit can go to 2B (We have other folks who can play CF).  Does Mateo have a higher ceiling than most waiver wire types?
Steve Adams
5:14
He is better than most waiver wire types, yes (or at least has a higher ceiling, as you referenced). He's also controllable for six years -- if you think he's talented enough to be a big leaguer, you make the acquisition and figure out the logistics on the fly. He can play 2B, play some in the outfield, bounce all over the diamond -- the exact role doesn't matter as much when the team clearly isn't going to contend.

Which Cardinal has the biggest bounceback?  Matt Carpenter or Carlos Martinez?
Steve Adams
5:15
I'd take Martinez between those two
Ed

how come you never answer my questions?
Steve Adams
5:15
Because I don't like you Ed! (Also because this is a "slow" chat and we have 739 people in here at the moment)

Who pitches first at MLB regular season level... Shelby Miller or Trevor Rosenthal?
Steve Adams
5:16
Rosenthal will probably break camp with the Royals. I don't know that Miller will even make it to the Majors this year.
Ed

too bad.....I like and respect you.
Steve Adams

Well now I feel like a fool. (For real though -- hope that initial comment wasn't taken seriously, haha -- just tons of questions coming in at all times)

How do options work on non-tendered guys signed to minor league deals, like a Yolmer Sanchez? He's out of options, but that's not stopping him from starting in AAA, right?
Steve Adams
5:20
Correct. Because he's not on the 40-man roster, he can't be "optioned" to Triple-A. "Optioning" someone is taking a player on the 40-man and sending them from the MLB roster to a minor league affiliate, in essence.

If Sanchez is selected to the 40-man, though, he can't be optioned and would need to clear waivers to be sent down.

I'd need to look into his contract, but he almost certainly has a spring opt-out clause in his deal anyhow, so if he's not going to make the MLB club he might just return to free agency
