Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 3/12/19

Steve Adams
3:19
Greetings all -- I'll start fielding questions in a couple of minutes but feel free to start asking right away.
AA
3:23
Could the Braves be a possible dark horse to sign Gio Gonzalez?
Steve Adams
3:24
It wouldn't surprise me. They have tons of options but also quite a few injury uncertainties right now, and many of the guys in house have minimal MLB experience. Gio isn't a world-beater, and he's probably not even the pitcher he was two to three years ago, but he's a perfectly viable fourth starter or so. And at this point, I can't even see him getting multiple years.
3:25
Not sure if he's still holding out for two years, but he'd be a fine pickup for any contender at $6-10MM on a one-year deal or even something like 2/16 (again -- I don't think he gets two at this point).

NFL free agency hasn't even technically started and it's 1000x more exciting than this MLB offseason already
Steve Adams
3:26
NFL free agency is a chaotic frenzy every winter. Even before the MLB offseason adopted this nauseating, plodding pace that statement was probably still true.

Fantasy Draft:  Of the 3, which 2 do you take:  Scherzer/DeGrom/Sale
Steve Adams
3:27
I'm not sure the context here, but if I'm ranking them, I'd rank them in the order you listed them.
Dallas
3:27
Do you think a CLE-SD trade can happen before season begins? Something around Kluber/Bauer Myers/prospects/money?
Steve Adams
3:27
At this point, no, nothing like that is going to come together. (And Myers wouldn't be a desirable piece for the Indians in that deal anyway)

3:28
If both players were free agents right now who would you rather have: Bryce (age 26) for 330m/13 (age 38 at end of contract) or Stanton (age 29) 275m/10 (age 38)?

Does Adam Jones still have his 5-10 rights?
Steve Adams
3:28
Nope. 10-and-5 rights are awarded to players with 10+ years of MLB service and at least five consecutive seasons with one team. Signing with a new team axed his 10-and-5 rights.
3:29
10-and-5 rights, for those unfamiliar, give a player veto power over any possible trades

3:29
Do you think the pirates could actually sign Dallas keuchel?
Steve Adams
3:30
I don't. He's obviously not getting the insane six-year deal that Boras entered the market seeking, and he's probably not even getting the $25MM AAV they were seeking, but I do still think he'll be far too expensive for the Bucs to consider.

The Red Sox bullpen scares me.  Words of encouragement?
Steve Adams
3:30
I don't have many. I can't believe they didn't add more talent to the mix this winter.
Rookies
3:31
Bigger impact 2019 Luzardo or Paddack?
Steve Adams
3:32
Luzardo had more innings in the minors last year. I think they'll both be on limited workloads, but since he built up to a higher innings total last season, I'll vote him.

3:32
Will I pickup an outfield by the close of spring? Does it even matter?
Steve Adams
3:33
(Farhan Zaidi -- Giants president of baseball operations)

I think they'll add someone, sure, but I can't see the Giants actually contending with the Rockies and Dodgers for a full season, nor are there any difference-making OFs left on the market, so I don't think it'll be especially consequential for them.

3:34
I'm looking at the rotation and bullpen and not very excited. Should I be more excited about the Twins chances? Do you think that "Falvine" is just waiting to see how things play out and could add depth via trades?
Steve Adams
3:35
Does seem that's the case, though not sure why that is. I think either Keuchel or Kimbrel would've been a worthwhile add, though their asking prices have been pretty significant.

That said, I think Kyle Gibson is going to have a better year than many would expect, and I've long been a big Michael Pineda believer. Trevor May, Taylor Rogers and Fernando Romero aren't exactly proven commodities at the back of that 'pen, but I'm bullish on all three of them, as well.

Rogers was untouchable last season once he added a slider in late May/early June.
Orioles
3:36
Why don't we sign Bartolo Colon? Sure he won't provide much at this point, but he will eat innings and bring in fans to watch our otherwise forgetful club.
Steve Adams
3:37
Generally agree -- whether it's Bartolo or any other SP, I wouldn't mind seeing the O's add some depth. It's seems a little ridiculous, at first, to suggest that Colon will sell tickets, but I do agree with the idea that he very well could provide a nominal boost in that department.
Sean
3:37
Are the Mariners stuck with Encarnacion until mid-summer?
Steve Adams
3:39
I don't think so. If he's raking in late April and some contending club loses a 1B/DH, the Mariners won't hesitate to move him. Trades that early aren't the MOST common, but we did see the Alex Colome/Denard Span deal come through in May last year. I remember the Mets trading Ike Davis to Pittsburgh in mid-May several years ago as well. Everyone knows EE is available, and the asking price obviously won't be high.

3:39
Will Forrest Whitley be a member of the Astros starting rotation in the post season?
Steve Adams
3:40
I don't think so. He only pitched a combined 52 innings between Double-A and the Fall League in 2018. I do think he'll start some games for them in '19, but by that point in the year I wonder if they'll have moved him to a relief role to help manage his innings.
Braves
3:40
Do we believe we are out on Kimbrel?
Steve Adams
3:41
I don't think anyone is "out" on Kimbrel entirely, generally speaking. "Out" on him at whatever he's currently seeking, sure. If he's suddenly OK with taking like 1/18 -- yeah, I think the Braves (and several others) would be on board with that.
Chris Sale
3:41
Will I get the Red Sox to give me more than they gave David Price.
Steve Adams
3:42
I don't think it'll be more than Price just because I don't think he'll get the seven-year guarantee that Price did. But, I can see him getting paid more annually on a five- or six-year term and if it's the latter, he could at least come close to Price's overall guarantee.
MATT DAMON
3:43
How concerned are you that Bader regresses offensively? Seems to have gotten quite lucky last year
Steve Adams
3:45
I think he'll definitely regress to an extent with the bat. He's not going to repeat a .358 BABIP, and his xwOBA last season was about 40 points lower than his actual wOBA. But, given his glove in CF, I'm not even sure it matters. He's so good out there that he'll be a two-win guy based on his defense and baserunning alone.
Cy Young
3:45
Obviously Nola, Scherzer, and DeGrom are the favorites to win the NL Cy Young this year. Who do you think could challenge them?
Steve Adams
3:47
I wouldn't be surprised to see any of Corbin, Wheeler, Syndergaard (man -- the Mets and Nationals' rotations are stacked) getting votes. For a more outside-the-box pick, I'd throw a Rockies starter in there -- but probably not the one everyone would expect. I'm a German Marquez believer
3:48
Not that I think Freeland is bad or anything, but I don't see how he maintains a sub-3.00 ERA when he's barely averaging seven K's per nine.
