The Mets should absolutely be going over the luxury tax line, especially if it is for something like signing Michael Conforto to an extension. Are they just being penny wise and pound foolish?
Steve Adams
12:00
The Wilpon family's lack of spending (relative to market size) has been a source of scrutiny for years. Of course they should be willing to go over the tax line -- doesn't mean they will, but I agree anyway.

What’s the new on the Red Sox instigation?
Steve Adams
12:01
I have to imagine it's going to take a backseat to the coronavirus issues for a bit; we were supposed to have a resolution more than two weeks ago. I don't think anyone has an honest idea of when it'll wrap up.

How will a shortened season effect someone serving a suspension such as Michael Pineda who is serving a suspension from last year. Will they reduce the number of games he is suspended or keep it what it is?
Steve Adams
12:02
Well, his suspension was already reduced from 80 to 60, seemingly in a league acknowledgment that they believe he ingested the banned masking agent inadvertently but still needed to punish him.

I doubt it'd be further reduced; he'll just miss the first 39 games of whatever season is played out.

As a Pads fan selfishly, I feel a shortened season favors their off TJ Surgery / innings limited staff.  Thoughts?
Steve Adams
12:03
There's probably some truth to this for every club with guys coming back from TJ -- shorter season means fewer games to cover and perhaps greater workloads. White Sox and Michael Kopech jump to mind as another example.

I don't think anyone's going to call it a silver lining, but it's probably a very real consideration for teams.
Brian Cashman
12:04
Now that we will have a few weeks off I might just stand pat and not try to acquire a starter. And just wait for Paxton to come back
Steve Adams
12:04
I don't think it was ever likely that the Yankees would actually pull off an early trade for a starter, even though it seems clear that Cashman was at least poking around.

How will this shutdown affect players who have opt-out dates?  It seems many individual contracts will need to be amended, or even renegotiated ?
Steve Adams
12:07
That's a really good question. I'll reach out to some agents to ask that, as I think it'd make an interesting topic to explore. My guess is that right now, they're not even certain themselves. But yes, lots of players have out clauses in their minor league deals over the course of the next two weeks
CJ
12:09
A lot of incentive laden contracts will be affected by this I imagine.
Steve Adams
12:10
Very true as well. Players with plate appearances and innings pitched bonuses are seeing their earning power curbed. It's definitely something worth looking into. I'll probably have some extra time on my hands, so I'll be doing just that!

I can't wait until you're fired, Steve
Steve Adams
12:10
Shucks.
Nolan Arenado
12:10
Can I get out of Colorado! Everyone knows I don’t really wanna be here!
Steve Adams
12:11
I'd be surprised if Arenado isn't heavily rumored to be available again this summer and I'll be very surprised if he's on the team by Opening Day 2021.

Will the MLB make every series include a double-header to make up for the delayed start of the season?
Steve Adams
12:12
Can't imagine the union green-lighting that. The MLB season is already rigorous with very few off-days. I think there'd just be fewer games in the regular season.

Does Mancini's injury concern the O's?
Steve Adams
12:14
How could it not? It should concern everyone. I'm concerned for the guy and glad to see that the initial operation appears to have gone well. Cancer sucks.

12:15
With this time out do you think it may prompt some trades
Steve Adams
12:15
Nah, I don't think we'll see anything of the sort. If anything, it makes trading harder. If you're trading for a guy who's a free agent next year -- how many games are you even getting him for?
12:16
It just adds to the uncertainty of everything

Regarding Domingo Germans suspension... if it’s a delayed/shortened season ... do you think they’ll recalculate is time out ?
Steve Adams
12:16
Answered this with regard to Pineda above -- no, I don't. He'll miss the remaining number of games on his suspension.

Javy Baez:  7 years, $150 million extension.  Sound fair?
Steve Adams
12:18
I think his camp would call that light. Conservatively say he goes from $10MM in 2020 to $16MM in 2021... you're at 6/134 for his free-agent seasons -- about $22MM a deal for ages 29 through 34.
12:19
They'll be looking for a longer deal and a heavier AAV.
Aaron Judge
12:20
Should I just have the surgery now to fix my tear in my rib?
Steve Adams
12:21
I'll never understand anyone who says "Just have the surgery already" or "He should've had the surgery earlier"

Surgery is always a last resort. No surgery comes with a non-zero chance of additional complication, and recovery is never guaranteed. Of course Judge shouldn't have surgery now. He should have surgery if and only if one of the many medical professionals with which the Yankees consult deems that to be his only recourse.
12:23
Alrighty -- I'm going to wrap this up at the usual one hour mark. If things are slowed down to this extent over the course of the shutdown, perhaps we'll add some additional weekly chats to at least make us all feel a bit more normal again for a brief period.

You can always ask me more questions on Twitter if you like: @Adams_Steve. Thanks for chatting everyone, and stay safe!
