Steve Adams

Greetings all. I should have an hour-plus today, so hopefully will make up a bit for the somewhat truncated chat last week.

Do you think Gore has a rotation spot for much longer?
Steve Adams
2:25
I don't know why, based on what we've seen, you'd remove him from the rotation even when Snell comes back. I'd go to six-man or drop Martinez to a long-relief role for the time being. Nothing Gore has done suggests that he's overmatched.

2:25
Your thoughts on Orioles timeline for calling up Rodriguez and/or Rutchman.
Steve Adams
2:27
Gray-Rod got hit hard today and Rutschman only just got cleared for his first minor league game after a lengthy absence due to a triceps injury. I don't think the O's will turn to either anytime soon. The new CBA incentivized a lot of teams to carry their top prospects on the Opening Day roster, but the downside of awarding a full year of service to someone for finishing well in ROY voting is that it disincentivizes tanking teams like Baltimore and Pittsburgh to promote them early in the year.
2:29
The O's legitimately wouldn't want Adley or Rodriguez to win ROY this year, because they'd get a full year of service. They're not trying to win anyhow, so why not keep them down until July when you know they won't be able to accumulate the stats to get a full year based on ROY voting?

Maybe the O's or Pirates will prove me wrong and call up Rodriguez or Oneil Cruz earlier than I'm expecting, but I don't see any reason to expect they would call up a top prospect of that caliber before the summer.

Buying the Mariners?
Steve Adams
2:30
I picked them as a playoff team prior to the season. You're obviously going to see guys like France and Crawford come back down to earth a bit, but I also firmly believe better things are ahead for struggling guys like Rodriguez and Kelenic, so yeah, I think this team is a legitimate playoff threat.

2:30
Possible Reds and As trade candidates this summer?
Steve Adams
2:32
Reds: Mahle, Castillo, Naquin, Farmer, Wilson, Sims, Cessa, Strickland

A's: Montas, Laureano, Murphy, Kemp, Trivino, Grimm, Kolarek
I guess Andrus and Piscotty, but not like either really has trade value.
Duffy
2:34
More likely to be traded this summer: Trey Mancini or Josh Bell?
Steve Adams
2:34
Can I choose both?
Tyler Houston
2:34
Will Odorizzi finish the season with the Astros?
Steve Adams
2:36
Odorizzi takes a ton of crap from Astros fans, but he was pretty good for most of the 2021 season. He got a late start in camp, hit the injured list early, then came back with 96 innings of 3.72 ERA ball, a passable strikeout rate and a very good walk rate. He's had a slow start again this year, but generally speaking, he's a fine five-inning pitcher.

I thought the 'Stros might trade him this offseason anyway after last year's public frustration with the frequent early hooks, but they held onto him and are probably glad they did with McCullers out until at least June.
2:37
I'd be surprised if he keeps struggling to this extent. It's been three starts.
bob nutting stinks
2:37
any chance the pirates owner sells team to owner that wants to win?!?!?
Steve Adams
2:38
I'm sure Nutting would love to win. Winning would make him more money. The problem is he wants to win for a very low cost in terms of player payroll, and the likelihood of that is not great. He'll sell someday, but no indication that'll be anytime soon.
Speaking of tanking teams…
2:38
When does Oneil Cruz get the call?
Steve Adams
2:39
Everything I said about the O's/Rodriguez/Adley holds true here. I don't see why they'd call him up before the summer since they don't want to risk him raking and building a five-month ROY case.

Brendan Rodgers for the rockies, can he be sent down? because he looks awful. is there an injury or something we dont know about? yikes
Steve Adams
2:40
He has a pair of minor league option years remaining, and it wouldn't surprise me if they sent him down sooner than later. He's striking out at a 30% clip, isn't making hard contact, etc.

A little reset in AAA might do him some good.

2:42
In reference to the service time argument for Rookie of the Year. Let’s say the Orioles bring up Rutschman in May and he wins Rookie of the Year. That gives him one full year of service time. What’s to stop the Orioles from sending him down at the start of the 2023 season to preserve the extra year? If they did it at the start it would be obvious, but say he slumps in May? Send him down for 3 weeks to “work things out”. That has a Kris Bryant feel to it. But Bryant lost his grievance
Steve Adams
2:43
Bryant had never played a game in the Majors. The Cubs could BS their way through it (and probably should've lost that grievance). There's no way that on the heels of a ROY season, the O's could make a straight-faced claim that an optional assignment to Norfolk that was just long enough to buy a new year of service was done for baseball purposes.

Correa open to long-term deal with Twins, how realistic?
Steve Adams
2:44
I don't see it happening, but as I outlined this morning, they have the money and payroll capacity to do it if they really feel it's a good fit. I still think there's like a 90% chance he just opts out.
Cubs fan
2:45
Ok, so when does the Cubs FO make the difficult decision to release Hason Heyward.  Lots of 40-man issues facing the Cubs in the near future.  He just seemingly adds to it.
Steve Adams
2:48
He'd need to play a lot worse than he currently is. Heyward is overpaid obviously, but he's played at something like a 2.5 WAR/162 games clip throughout his tenure with the Cubs. There are worse albatross deals out there.

He's hitting fine to begin the season, although it's a whole lot of BABIP smoke and mirrors. I still think he's going to need a long stretch of brutal production at the plate before the Cubs just cut him.

Trea Turner extending or resigning with the Dodgers a possibility? Or too many big contracts and still have to pay Buehler and possibly Belly?
Steve Adams
2:51
The only long-term deals on the books are Mookie and Freddie. They could definitely keep Turner, but as you said, they also have to consider Buehler. I don't think, given Bellinger's recent history, they're going to extend him. I know he's hitting well for now, but there's too much risk in that profile.

2:51
Heyward for Gallo?
Steve Adams
2:52
No way the Yankees take that contract on
Gallo's a free agent at season's end. Heyward is making twice as much as Gallo in 2022 and is owed $23MM in 2023.

Is Luis Robert going on the IL?
Steve Adams
2:54
Rick Hahn told reporters like 10 minutes ago that he expects Robert to play tomorrow.

2:54
You've addressed Heyward, now I'm curious to know what you think the Mets wind up doing with Cano?  How much rope does he have?  Fans are rattling cages.
Steve Adams
2:55
Cano's not doing much of anything, and there are greater questions about his ability to perform both due to his age and the recent PED suspension. I find him to be a more realistic release candidate than Heyward.

Rosario to the IL. Acuna coming back. No need to panic right? ....right?
Steve Adams
2:56
I didn't like the Braves' outfield mix heading into the season. I thought the Rosario deal was a mistake, and the combination of Duvall, Heredia, Ozuna and Dickerson did nothing to excite me.

Ozuna has obviously exceeded my expectations so far, but it's just not a great collection of outfielders without Acuna in the mix.
