Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 4/6/21

Steve Adams
2:06
Actual baseball has been played since our last chat. What a time to be alive (and to marvel at some weird, early small sample oddities)

Does Tim [Dierkes] ever host live chats?
Steve Adams
2:07
On occasion. I think his last one was after our Top 50 Free Agent predictions. I can bug him to host a chat if our readers desire!
Change My Mind
2:07
Anthony Rendon, not Mike Trout, will win 2021 MVP.
Steve Adams
2:08
I made this pick in our staff predictions for our Front Office subscribers and in listing my Awards picks in my chat last week! I shant try to change your mind. If we are right, we can rejoice together.

What's your opinion on the odor trade?
Steve Adams
2:09
I'm pretty stunned anyone gave up anything to get him, even with Texas paying the contract. Obviously can't have a full reaction until we know the names involved, but I was surprised.

Odor will probably hit a bunch of homers at Yankee Stadium if he gets any real playing time there though, so there's that.

From your knowledge of this injury, what's Tatis's timetable for returning?
Steve Adams
2:11
I think it's irresponsible to speculate on a guy's health like that. I cringed when I  saw so many YouTube doctors cutting videos trying to guess his timeline, treatment options, etc.. You haven't seen his imaging, you haven't spoken to the player or any other medical professionals who've evaluated him ... why throw guesses like that out there?

2:12
Yermin Mercedes is AWESOME! Obviously he can't sustain this level (no one could outside Roy Hobbs), but people just need to root for the guy after being in minors for 11 years before getting his shot.
Steve Adams
2:12
Exactly the kind of fun small sample oddities you get early in the year that I love. Cheering for the Yerminator.

I get why Akil Baddoo isn't getting an early run in Detroit...when u have such unbelievably talented OF's such as Victor Reyes, Jacoby Jones, and Robbie(not Rex Grossman)...it all makes sense...agreed? And what were the Twins thinking? He's just a KID!
Steve Adams
2:14
Baddoo hit .214/.290/.393 in A-ball in 2019, missed half that season on the IL, and didn't play with the Twins' alternate site in 2020. I have to imagine they were surprised he was taken.
2:15
As for getting an early run -- the Tigers have played like 5 games. He'll get plenty of playing time. That pair of homers has been more early-season fun though
Marcus
2:15
Is Nelson Cruz so bad defensively that the Twins will keep his bat out of the lineup all games in NL Parks?
Steve Adams
2:15
This is his third season in MN and he's not played a single inning in the field.

What do you make of the high number of Rule 5 players on rosters this year?
Steve Adams
2:17
A lot of teams didn't want to spend any money on decent but unexciting free agents to raise their collective floors, and the lack of such players on a bunch of rosters made it easier to carry Rule 5 guys. I'll be curious to see how many stick; it's hard for most teams to get through a year with a Rule 5 guy

And major free agent names next season that you see the Giants as a frontrunner to get?
Steve Adams
2:19
I wouldn't label the Giants as any kind of frontrunner on a specific player even at the beginning of free agency, let alone early in the regular season. Most of those connections are speculative -- Eric Hosmer/Yankees, Bauer/Angels come to mind -- and they're more often than not overblown based on anecdotal bits of info.

Broadly, I think the Giants will be aggressive on rotation help next winter, and they make sense to pursue one of the big shortstops, even with Luciano coming.

2:20
Do you see the Arcia trade being beneficial to both sides?
Steve Adams
2:22
I was surprised to see the Braves thinning out the bullpen depth for a bench option who may not be a marked upgrade over their in-house options. It's not like Weigel and Sobotka are exactly key pieces or anything, but especially with Martin already dinged up and Touki on the shelf, I was mildly surprised they parted with a pair of 40-man 'pen options.

First big name prospect to be called up?
Steve Adams
2:23
Jarred Kelenic, Logan Gilbert, Alex Kirilloff all seem plausible

2:23
Pittsburgh closer? When the music stops who doesn’t have a chair? Is Bedaed of Padres (via Musgrave trade) going to be the one to close?
Steve Adams
2:23
Richard Rodriguez.
2:24
Unless you're asking after Rodriguez gets traded, which seems quite likely. At that point, yeah Bednar could be in the mix, but it'll be dependent on performance of all the other guys. Stratton, Crick could be in the mix.
Colton
2:25
It's hard to imagine Colorado not trading Story, right? I can't seem him signing an extension at all.
Steve Adams
2:26
I can't see him signing an extension either, but that doesn't mean he's a lock to be traded. The Rockies continually see themselves as a contending club despite all conventional wisdom, so I have a hard time expecting them to trade players away
C'Mon!
2:27
Surely the Reds could have scraped up something comparable to acquire Arcia!!!
Steve Adams
2:28
Probably, but Arcia has nearly 2000 MLB plate appearances and hasn't been good at all to date. They probably prefer the Suarez/Moose/India gambit, even if the defensive returns seem destined to be poor.

Kopech has looked electric so far, albeit short sample size. Do you think he cracks the rotation this year or not until 2022?
Steve Adams
2:29
Part of the reason he's in the 'pen is to keep his workload manageable. He could make some spot starts, I suppose, but he's looked quite good in this role, as you said. I think running him out there for two to three innings at a time is a good way to get him some innings, build for 2022 and keep his arm viable as a postseason option.

Any chance the Seager brothers (Corey and Kyle) get reunited in Seattle or even somewhere else?
Steve Adams
2:31
I think the Mariners will be in position to spend big next winter, but I'm expecting Seager (Corey) to be the top free agent on the market. I don't know that a $300MM+ signing is something Dipoto's going to push for. (Pujols in LAA was engineered by ownership)
2:32
Yankees and Rangers announced the Odor trade: OF Josh Stowers (acquired in the Shed Long/Sonny Gray sequence) and OF/C Antonio Cabello to Texas
Rocky Problem High
2:33
Given the grief they got trading Arenado and their penchant for getting doggone little in return there and for Tulo, I expect Colo to take the qualifying offer pick vs. more criticism.
Steve Adams
2:34
They shouldn't let past criticisms deter them from making any present-day moves, but again, I gave up predicting what the Rockies will do long ago. I do think if they're within even 8-9 games of a Wild Card spot, there's a chance ownership just nixes any proposals and insists on going for it.

2:35
any chance Edwin Encarcion plays this year? Looks like the Indians could really use him.
Steve Adams
2:36
He spent most of the winter trying to find a suitable deal (well, one he considered suitable) and came up empty. Indians aren't going to bring him back to play over Franmil
