Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 4/6/21

Something Brewing
2:37
I know Luis Urias is only 23 years old but there's gotta be something hiding in that bat, right? I know injury and COVID stalled him last season but do you think he has the tools and just needs a boost of confidence?
Steve Adams
2:38
Urias was one of the top-ranked hitting prospects in the game with San Diego, though the Padres never seemed to love him as much as the rest of the industry and didn't ever give him a fair shake. I think he has it in him to hit enough to be a big league regular. Shortstop probably isn't the best position for him, though.
Jacob Degrom
2:39
Am I the worse supported great pitcher of all time?
Steve Adams
2:40
I don't have any firm data on that outside of some of the numbers folks were tweeting out this morning, but it's pretty astonishing how the Mets are consistently unable to score behind him.
Rio Ruiz
2:40
Am I really a better option then Roughned Odor at 2nd base?
Steve Adams
2:40
I think so
Thebaileyman
2:41
With Springer, Ray, Hatch, and Pearson all due back in April, who gets dropped from the Jays 40 man.  Thanks
Steve Adams
2:42
All of those guys are already on the 40-man. They don't need to make 40-man moves to accommodate any of them. They can just option guys don to the ATS
Cease Your Complaining
2:43
Dylan Cease had an outstanding camp but came out flat in his first game of the season. Is this guy nothing more than a perpetual tease or do you think it's just a matter of building confidence and discovering the right mix of pitches?
Steve Adams
2:44
I'm still a believer. That mix of velo and huge spin on two breaking pitches is pretty rare, and he still doesn't even have a full year's worth of MLB starts under his belt. At worst, I think he'll be a very interesting reliever.
Finding nimmo
2:45
no dom smith pinch hitting and Degrom 75 pitches?
Steve Adams
2:47
Yeah there were some questionable calls last night. May probably pitches the eighth inning regardless, though. We've seen quite a few early hooks like that so far around the game. Jose Berrios, for instance. I think clubs are going to be pretty careful with pitcher workloads both in terms of bulk innings and, early on, pitch counts on a start to start basis.

If deGrom has that same start going in August, the decision is probably different.

2:48
Obviously their contending window doesn’t close after one season but if Tatis Jr. misses the rest of the season do the Padres try to get one of the top SS like Story?
Steve Adams
2:49
At the trade deadline? Sure, I can see them trying to pry Story away from Colorado or aiming for Correa or Baez if they're on the market. In free agency? No
ol' perfesser
2:49
deGrom or Cole?
Steve Adams
2:50
deGrom, for me, but if you felt strongly about Cole I wouldn't put up a huge fight. It's not an overwhelmingly large gap or anything
Jill
2:51
Can Cleveland make the playoffs?
Steve Adams
2:52
Sure. I don't think it's likely, necessarily, and I didn't list them as a playoff team in my predictions, but they have a solid pitching staff that could carry them there. I think the Twins and White Sox are both much likelier though.
Mitch Haniger
2:53
Will I be traded or do I still have a future with the Mariners?
Steve Adams
2:54
I think a trade is the likeliest outcome, though not necessarily this year. Eventually, though, the hope has to be that the outfield can consist of Kelenic, Rodriguez, Trammell, Lewis in some combination
Light That Baby Up
2:55
Over/under Ohtani pitches 100 innings this year?
Steve Adams
2:55
I'm hoping for the over, of course, but I wouldn't feel great predicting that or betting any money on it
ConeyIslandBaby
2:56
Is there any scenario that doesn't include a universal DH next season?
Steve Adams
2:57
It feels more or less inevitable to me, but I'm sure there's some way that MLB and the MLBPA can find a way to negotiate themselves into a knot where the result is forgoing something despite both parties wanting it
(Clumsily worded jab at the relationship between the two parties aside, I think this is the last year of pitchers hitting)
Rougned Odor
2:58
When Voit comes back do you think the Yankees will shift DJ LeMahieu to 3rd and Urshela to SS so I can stay at 2nd? Would you rather keep my bat in the line-up or Torres?
Steve Adams
2:59
I know there was some frustration with Gleyber's bat in 2020, but he's not going to be displaced by Odor

Odor is a bench bat unless he somehow starts mashing at a ridiculous pace and forces his way into regular playing time. Nothing about the past five years suggests that is likely to happen.
Chris Martin numbness?
3:02
I read Chris Martin was experiencing "finger numbness." That sounds scary... like he might even need some kind of ligament replacement surgery. I also read that the Braves didn't even give him an MRI. Doesn't the injury at least sound worrisome enough to do an MRI?
Steve Adams
3:03
Finger numbness, if anything, would be more in line with thoracic outlet symptoms than Tommy John symptoms -- at least based on the symptoms that are traditionally reported within the baseball realm. Beyond that purely historical observation, I have no medical background and no knowledge of why the Braves wouldn't do an MRI on Martin. If their medical staff deemed it unnecessary, I'd certainly trust their instincts over my own
Julian Merryweather
3:04
Am I the Blue Jays primary closer now? Fantasy owners want to know.
Steve Adams
3:04
I don't think they have one yet, but there's no reason for him not to keep getting save opportunities based on the early performance, so pick him up
Joyful Noise
3:05
I think SD actually will take a swipe at one of the FA SS and pay them enough to move them to 2B or the OF.
Steve Adams
3:07
They already have Machado at 10/300, Tatis at 14/341 and Hosmer at 8/144. They're paying Snell $13MM annually, Darvish $21MM annually, Myers $21MM ... at a certain point they're going to back out of uber-aggressive contractual commitments.
3:08
But hey, I'd have said there's no way they acquire Darvish, Snell AND Musgrove at the beginning of the offseason, so if you want to hold onto hope for more Preller madness, far be it from me to dissuade you
3:09
Alrighty, I've got to wrap this up for the week. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve for more questions if you're so inclined. Thanks for chatting, and have a great week.
