This year's reduction seemed frivolous, I agree. I was a fan of the manner in which it accelerated game times in 2023, I'll say.

I've seen Jared Jones being compared to a young Strider, that's high praise. Is this a fair comparison?
Steve Adams
1:33
To a "young" Strider? Spencer Strider is 25! He IS young, ha.

Broadly speaking, if you take any top young player and compare him to the best in the game at his position (or one of the best) based on like two weeks of games, you're just setting yourself up for disappointment.
And I say that as someone who's on  record having picked Jones for NL Rookie of the Year.
1:34
Just let Jared Jones be Jared Jones. He's really good! He probably won't be as good as Spencer Strider, but that's true of like 99% of pitchers. Enjoy the forthcoming breakout all the same -- I'm all aboard on Jones.

Wait. Didn't the Mets sign Tehran to a $5M deal?  And they just DFAd him?  Huh?
Steve Adams
1:36
Huh. They signed him for a $2.5MM base, yes (plus the 110% tax). I'm surprised to see him designated for assignment.

Will the CWS clean house?  Trade Robert and Vaughn and everything else?
Steve Adams
1:38
Robert's not going to be traded while he's hurt, and he has three years left on his deal so there's no pressure to move him even when he's back. I can see it being discussed next offseason more than this summer.

I know the Sox have built Vaughn up as a big name, but he just hasn't been good at almost any point. I don't think there's much trade value there.

I do expect they'll be open to moving the majority of the roster, though. Honestly, even Crochet will get some interest this summer, and he's only got two years of club control left after 2024, so it's not completely nuts to think they could find an offer to their liking.

Who is the first big name (top 200) player that is traded this season?
Steve Adams
1:39
No good way of knowing this, of course, but I'll guess someone on the Marlins, based on how the early schedule has played out.

Luzardo, Arraez, Scott ... Tanner Scott's the easiest trade candidate there since he's a free agent at season's end.

1:40
Other than Juan Soto, who’s the biggest name that’ll be on a different team come next year?
Steve Adams
1:42
Corbin Burnes? I suppose we need to see how David Rubenstein plans to spend, but Burnes is going to push for the type of megadeal we've never seen the O's approach before. Shane Bieber is a decent candidate. There's a lot of notable names who'll change teams. Jesus Luzardo and Luis Arraez if you stretch to include trade candidates.

How concerned should I be with the 4-7 start for the Giants? Half the lineup look so lost at the plate, and the pen is pretty poopy
Steve Adams
1:44
It's not a lineup I love, and I am concerned with the depth in the rotation, even after adding Snell. I thought the late adds of Chapman and Snell obviously helped salvage what had been a lackluster offseason, but I still didn't pick SF to make the playoffs either.

Steve, I asked last you the last time you were here if you thought the Sox would lose 120 games?  You said "no chance".  Care to update that prediction now?
Steve Adams
1:46
My exact response was:

"Ha, I don't think anyone's going to lose 120. Rockies are my pick for worst MLB record (sorry Rox fans), and even they probably won't get there."

And nah, I still don't think the White Sox will lose 120 (even if it's unequivocally more likely now than a week ago, with the way they've played)

Do you think Josiah Gray is still in the rotation for the next competitive Nats team?
Steve Adams
1:46
No. I just don't think he's very good.
1:47
He struggles immensely against lefties, and the four-seamer is too hittable and too susceptible to home runs. The command is also well below average.

Please tell me you saw my Pads come back from 8-0 last night... do you have a favorite comeback game?
Steve Adams
1:49
I didn't watch any of that game unfortunately, but wild night it seems like. I don't know about a favorite comeback ever, but I was at Game 163 in 2009, Twins vs. Tigers, which was a back-and-forth level of utter chaos the likes of which I've never seen. Lead changes, bases constantly full in tightrope situations with improbable double plays ... one of the most entertaining and dramatic games I've ever seen. And since it was pre-Target Field, at the Metrodome, the decibel level was astonishing.
1:50
I don't know if I'll ever go to a more entertaining live sports event than that, ha. It was absolutely bonkers

Do you not think it is time the Jays gave up on Manoak ... I know it would be selling low but I am sure some organization would take a flyer?
Steve Adams
1:52
He just turned 26, he has an option year remaining beyond the current one, and he's all of 18 months removed from being a top-three finisher in Cy Young voting. Their rotation depth also isn't great. I get the frustration, but there's no harm in keeping him in the minors and trying to get him back on track. The potential benefit of doing so outweighs the lowball offers they'd get in return for him.
AJ Puk or Tanner Scott
1:53
Who demands more of a return in a trade?
Steve Adams
1:53
Puk is controlled through 2026. Scott is a free agent in six months.

Care to revise your take on the Red Sox rotation being “in shambles” from the podcast when Jordan Montgomery’s signing was announced?
Steve Adams
1:55
Not especially. They currently have four healthy guys. A couple of good starts from Houck, Crawford and Whitlock apiece doesn't alter much for me. The group they have clearly has talent, but most have never worked close to a full season of innings, and the depth behind the top names is ugly.
1:56
If you could've promised me Houck, Whitlock, Crawford, Pivetta and Bello would stay healthy enough to pitch 160 innings apiece without wearing down once they get into personal-high workload territories, I'd have said "Oh then they'll be fine."  But that's not likely to happen, either.

Who's your favorite obscure baseball player?
Steve Adams
1:57
I had an irrational love for Luis Rivas during my high school days even though he was never good, haha.
Brandon Inge
1:58
Brandon Inge was hit by that pitch. I will never let it go!
Steve Adams
1:58
Seriously if you've never watched Game 163 from 2009 between the Twins and Tigers, go watch it. I briefly forgot about the Inge HBP controversy. That game is certified insanity.
1:59
Just looked. Entire game is still on  YouTube, ha.

I miss game 163s. Padres and Rockies had an all-time classic in 2007 as well.

That was an amazing game. Matt Holliday's poor chin on that slide into home

What’s the logic behind having Rendon bat leadoff? I don’t know why you’d want someone so inept at getting on base to have the most plate appearances and ‘set up’ Trout. Help me understand
Steve Adams
2:01
Rendon has only been "inept" at getting on base for his first 39 plate appearances this season. He had a .361 OBP last year, .359 in his Angels career prior to '24, and .366 in his career.

He's nowhere near the player he used to be, but generally speaking, he walks a lot and puts the ball in play a lot.

What should Cleveland do to add depth to their pitching staff? Williams is still weeks away and Cantillo months away.  Who should fill out their rotation behind Bibee, McKenzie, Allen and Carrasco?
