Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 5/11/21

Cleveland doesnt rock!

No production from 1st, why not go get Pujols. No worse than what they have and good for the young guys.
Steve Adams
2:55
I'm pretty amazed by the number of readers here who seem to want their team to go get Pujols, who hasn't been a good hitter since 2016. Bobby Bradley may not be a great prospect, as I said before, but he should get a look before Pujols.

What does Mitch Keller need to do to be good, in your opinion?
Steve Adams
2:58
Get traded away from the Pirates? Worked for Cole, Musgrove, Glasnow.

I say that half-sarcastically, but maybe that's the eventual endgame here. I think the raw stuff with Keller is pretty good, but he hasn't had success with either front office group/coaching staff. I think some guys benefit from changes of scenery and a fresh start.
Marketing Musings
2:59
I'm all for MLB trying to have more flair and personality, but don't all their marketing campaigns appear extra cheesy and clearly made by people older than their target market?
Steve Adams
3:00
A lot of it does, yeah. (And at 35, I say that as someone who is part of that "you're too old to get it" demographic, ha.)

This comment reminds me of all the praise they got for hiring Ken Griffey Jr. as a youth outreach ambassador. Griffey would be a great pick if you were trying to reach people like me, who are in their mid-30s. It doesn't work so well for the next generation.

Can a Rule 5 pick be optioned to the minors after the first year? For example, Akil Baddoo sticks with the Tigers all of 2021 and Detroit gets to keep him. Can he be optioned after that?
Steve Adams
3:00
Yup

What about us though? Cron on the DL. We could give AP 250 ABs the rest of the way. Maybe he runs into 15-20 HRs. Gets up into the 685-690 range for dingers. We have nothing to lose. We’re never good.
Steve Adams
3:02
You could give those ABs to someone who actually has a future with the club.

Pujols might sign somewhere, but he wants to play fairly regularly, and he hasn't been a good hitter since Jarred Kelenic was too young to have a driver's license.
Twins guy
3:03
How bad was that Ynoa for Jaime Garcia trade in hindsight...
Steve Adams
3:07
Not really that bad? The Twins got a great season of Zack Littell by immediately flipping Garcia when their season went south, and Ynoa toiled for years before reinventing himself. Even now, he's only had a handful of good starts. Not saying he's going to fall apart or anything, but I don't really fault a team when a guy they traded 4-5 years ago adds a new pitch and completely reinvents himself after several years of futility.
I think you just tip your cap to the Braves for coaxing it out of him.

Khris Davis has a shot at reviving his career in Texas, right?
Steve Adams
3:09
He's not that old, so sure. I'm not holding out tons of hope, but as long as you're not suggesting "a shot" means he's like 50% to turn back into the old Khrush, I'd probably agree with you. We've seen stranger things.

Complete the sentence: mariners rebuild continues successfully if Kelenic....
Steve Adams
3:12
Kelenic could flop and their rebuild would still be fine if some combo of Julio Rodriguez, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Emerson Hancock, Cal Raleigh, Taylor Trammell and Evan White turn into strong big leaguers and they spend some money in free agency next year.
I don't think he'll flop. I think he's going to be great. Just saying Kelenic doesn't need to be framed as the sole player by which the rebuild lives and dies.

If the Nats are out of it come July, would trading Scherzer, Harrison, Hudson, Hand, Schwarber, and Gomes be enough to really start replenishing the barren farm system?
Steve Adams
3:14
Of that bunch, I don't think you're going to get much of a return outside of Scherzer and the relievers -- and even then it's not like Hudson will be a huge prize.

They'd replenish some depth if they got that aggressive -- I don't think it's likely, to be clear -- but that group alone isn't going to take them from bottom-of-the-scale farm to middle-of-the-pack or anything.

Is Story to NYY really a possibility? Move Torres to second and Lemahieu fills in everywhere?
Steve Adams
3:16
It's not a great possibility if the Yankees are still insistent on staying under the luxury tax.

What are the chances the Tigers release Franklin Perez after yet another shoulder surgery,  or is there still some potential of him contributing at some point?
Steve Adams
3:18
I doubt they'll release him, but I won't be surprised if they drop him from the 40-man this winter. Bummer for Perez. His shoulder just won't cooperate
3:19
Ok, I have to wrap things up for the week. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve. Connor will have a chat with our Front Office subscribers Friday. Mark will chat this weekend. I'll be back for another Tuesday chat next week.

Have a great week everyone!
