Over under on 100 losses for Cincinnati this season

I'll take the over.

Will the trade deadline be a little cooler with the extra teams making the playoffs?
Steve Adams

I can see the argument on either side.

"More teams in contention = more teams buying!"

or

"More teams getting in = teams are less motivated to make a move since it's easier to get in"

If anything, I think this year will be interesting because we're going to have more teams that are pretty clearly buried and selling. It's also increasingly common for fringe teams to sell of short-term assets even if they're not tearing down and rebuilding. We'll probably see some .500-ish teams sell off rentals while they still look into acquiring a Montas or someone.

Frankie Montas and AJ Puk for Andrew Vaughn and Cespedes. Who says no?
Steve Adams

I'm the low guy on Vaughn and the high guy on Montas, so I don't love that for Oakland. It's nothing against Vaughn, I just kind of grimace at the notion of trading a controllable SP for someone who's pretty much 1B only (even though Vaughn has spent time in the OF).

A's are probably more interested in that scenario than I personally am, ha. Vaughn's going to hit, I think, but I love Montas and would prefer to move him for someone with more control and more defensive value. Vaughn's going to be arbitration-eligible after 2023, and by 2024 the A's are going to be looking at moving him because the counting numbers are going to build up his arb price tag.

Is Chapman still the closer by the end of the year?
Steve Adams
2:56
Not if he can't improve his command. I think he's going to lose the job at least temporarily at this rate.

Are there really other destinations besides NYC and LA? Is it worth building our hope he could actually pick a team to make better rather than keep the big-city-coastal status quo?
Steve Adams

Of course there are. The Mariners have like $59MM on the books in 2023. Tigers $84MM. Cubs $94MM. Naitonals $62MM. I think the Yankees will be seen as the favorites, but there are plenty of teams that can afford it.
Rangers only have $85MM on the books even after Seager/Semien

Thoughts on Jhoan Duran? He has electrifying, fun stuff in his arm.
Steve Adams

Fun as hell to watch. It's going to be hard to take him out of the bullpen with how well the stuff has played there, but I can't help but be curious about what he'd look like in the rotation.
