Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 5/21/24

Whatever AJ Preller is willing to pay him again, haha. I think other clubs are just going to be wary of the constant ups and downs. I'd be surprised if he got another three-year deal -- he'll be 32 in February -- and plenty of clubs would still view him as a landmine. A decent two-year deal to just stay put in San Diego wouldn't shock me.
Logan O’Hoppe

Am I in the over looked category? Or the underrated category?
Steve Adams
1:52
Both? O'Hoppe is a good, solid young catcher who should have a regular role for the foreseeable future as long he stays healthy.

What kind of return can Erick Fedde net assuming he's still pitching similarly to how he has been to start the year?
Steve Adams

Darragh and I talked about this on a recent episode of the podcast. Some recent examples of trades of starters with 1.5 years left include Jose Berrios, Jose Castillo and Tyler Mahle. All of those guys netted one near-MLB-ready top-100 prospect (Austin Martin, Noelvi Marte, Spencer Steer) and some quality secondary pieces.

I don't think Fedde will be quite that much because of the lack of track record, but a muted version of those packages seems reasonable enough. He's one of the more interesting arms out there and I feel like he's already done enough to command one good 50-FV type prospect.

Will anyone pick up Laureano?
Steve Adams
1:57
Once he clears waivers and elects free agency, maybe. But no one's taking on the remainder of that $5.15MM salary.

In hindsight, the Corbin Burnes trade is looking awful for the Brewers. One assumes now though that they would be buyers at the deadline? Is there a top tier pitcher they could get, or would they target Eflin, Bassit, or even Luzardo possibly?
Steve Adams

I don't think that's true at all. Joey Ortiz is hitting .290/.398/.533 while playing good defense at multiple infield positions. If anything, the immediacy of his success makes the trade look better and justified for the Brewers. If they get anything from DL Hall this year, it's plausible that said pair combines to provide more value than Burnes at a fraction of the price -- and they're both controlled five more seasons beyond 2024.

That said, I understand where you're coming from with the lack of depth and all the rotation injuries.

Any of the arms you mentioned makes sense. Add in Kikuchi, Fedde, Paul Blackburn (health-permitting), Ross Stripling, Dakota Hudson I suppose ... there'll be more names available as the deadline draws nearer. Those are just  some that seem pretty clearly available already this summer. (Kikuchi being the exception I guess... still feel like the Jays could go on a run)

With Laureano now gone how long until they part with Florial?  He isn't a great defender and his average is tanking daily.  Guys like Schneemann are clearly ready to go and offer more position versatility.  Once Delauter is healthy he won't be far behind, nor Valera, Brito, Tena etc.
Steve Adams
2:01
I'm surprised they're still rostering Florial. He's exactly who he was in New York. Way, way too many strikeouts and a grounder-heavy approach that doesn't let him get to the above-average power he has.

Is MLBTR in financial trouble? Sponsored posts and teasing articles for paying customers only , not a good look but financial realities could be forcing your hand?
Steve Adams
2:03
We've had sponsored posts dating back to ... I don't know? Forever?

And we've had a subscription model since 2020, it was just confined to email only. We moved it to the main site recently to give more visibility to it and to create a backlog/archive for those subscribers that they didn't have to house in their email alone. Tim explained it here:

Will I be traded soon or before the deadline?
Steve Adams
2:06
Yeah with only one year remaining beyond the current season, I expect him to be traded if he's healthy. He's been intriguing in the bullpen, but the command is still terrible. Going to be hard to command too huge a haul when you're walking 15-16% of opponents. (He's already plunked three guy as well)

Are Austin Adams and Lucas Erceg on the Trade Block?
Steve Adams
2:08
Adams definitely will be. He's only controllable through 2025 and is already 33.

Erceg is more similar to Miller. The A's can control him another half decade if they like. There's a bit of a "found money" component with him, where they basically got him for free rather than drafting/developing him themselves -- and he's already in his late 20s because of his odd career arc. So I think that does make him more tradeable than, say, Miller -- but I also wouldn't call it likely. It'd take a pretty nice offer (not Miller sized, but a good one still).

Adams, yeah, if he's healthy he's getting traded.

Do you think at the end of the day the Padres trade me or sign me to a long term deal?
Steve Adams

Can I choose option C and say "Ride out his arb years and see how things go in free agency"?

Bryce Elder as a buy low or change of scenery for the Brewers?
Steve Adams
2:11
I don't think the Braves are really going to be in a position to be trading away MLB-ready rotation depth with Strider out for the season, Lopez making the jump back to a SP workload, a perennially injured (but healthy so far!) Chris Sale and a 40-year-old Charlie Morton on the staff.
Plus Max Fried missed like half of last season with a forearm injury.

So how long before Reds fans get what the owner promised when he bought the team?  Looking like going on 34 years no World Series and since 1995, last series playoff win. The ownership doesn't care about it's fan base
Steve Adams
2:14
I don't have a great answer since there's no indication Castellini is planning to sell, but just sympathizing ... Reds fans deserve better than what ownership has allotted for in the past decade or so. And the apparently annual tradition of some insane, boneheaded comments from Phil Castellini ("Where else are you going to go?" ..... "We run this team like a non-profit!") doesn't help matters.
Question
2:14
What would impress you more, 100 steals or 220 innings pitched?
Steve Adams
2:14
100 steals
2:16
I know 200-inning guys are rare these days with modern pitcher usage, but Logan Webb almost got to 220 last year and Sandy did get there the year before. I think we'll see a small handful of workhorse pitchers in that 220 range for awhile yet, whereas 100 steals is basically just Elly or no one. Elly is a freak.
(In the best possible way. Love EDLC)

What's Christian Walker looking at on the free agent market next year? Is Anthony Rizzo a fair comp?
Steve Adams
2:19
He's tough because he'll be 34 and presumably have a qualifying offer. I think he's better than Rizzo, but he'll also be 34 in year one of a deal, whereas Rizzo was 33.

I'd put something like Abreu/Carlos Santana (3/60-ish) near the top end of the range of plausible outcomes with a typical finish (perhaps a bit more on AAV), but a two-year deal in the Rizzo range does feel like a very realistic outcome.
