Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 5/25/18

Steve Adams
2:02
Makeup chat for this week's Tuesday delayed/shortened chat, as promised! If only there were some news to talk about this morning.
I'm going to go refill this desperately needed coffee after a terrible night of sleep, and then we'll get going
Dozier/Solarte
2:03
I just got offered Dozier for Solarte.... Solarte the real deal
Steve Adams
2:04
I like Solarte, but no way I flip take him 1-for-1 for Dozier in a fantasy league.

HOT OUT OF THE GATE - Anything new on Manuel Machado?
Steve Adams
2:05
Aside from Theo Epstein openly mocking all of the reports of names being discussed between the Cubs and Orioles? It's May, there's not much actual trade talk going on. There's a reason we've largely ignored all of the Cubs/Machado stuff leading up to Theo's comments.

Where do you think newly DFA’d Hanley will be?
Steve Adams
2:06
He'll be released. From there, could land a number of places, but Mets and Rockies are two of the first teams I thought of. Astros could use a better option than Gattis at DH, though he's been a big part of that team for years.

2:06
Is Sean newcomb the real deal or is he just faking it?
Steve Adams
2:08
He's the "real deal" in the sense that I buy him as a viable midrotation starter, but he's not going to sustain a low-2.00s ERA when he's walking 4-5 per nine and scraping by on a .250 BABIP with what's also probably some fluky luck in terms of preventing homers.
Mid-3.00s ERA and tons of strikeouts, though? Sure sign me up.

Are you surprised Arcia was optioned?
Steve Adams
2:09
A little bit just because the glove is still good, but he's clearly reaching right now, so I don't mind the decision to try to relax him and get him back on track in a hitter-friendly setting like Colorado Springs
Ryan Braun
2:09
Do i have ANY trade value at this point??
Steve Adams
2:09
Not really
2:10
Unless "negative" value counts as trade value?
John

Seems like a bad idea to not to limit Alex Reyes coming back from TJ, right?
Steve Adams
2:12
I'd be more concerned with how he's handled start to start than anything else. I'm sure they're not going to trot him out there on three days' rest, for instance, just like they're not going to have him go throw 110 pitches in three straight starts. They'll be cautious with him, and with six viable starters (once Martinez is back), I doubt he ends up too far beyond 120 total innings on the year.

Would be an interesting piece to shift to the 'pen late in the season, too, for multi-inning relief work in the postseason if they make it. Though if he's thriving as a starter, they probably wouldn't go that route.

How many MLB starting rotations are currently stronger than the Nola, Arrieta, Pivetta, Velasquez and Eflin?
Steve Adams
2:13
I don't think Velasquez/Eflin is really a proven duo at the back of that rotation, and even Pivetta has some pretty significant platoon splits. But I do think the top three is solid -- just not to the extent where you're painting it among the game's elite.

Bandy trading spot? Or does he get released and gets a minors deal
Steve Adams
2:14
I doubt it. It's not like he's done much to prove he's a marked upgrade over even Bobby Wilson. If they're going to make a move, I feel like it'd be to get someone who is clearly better. Bandy's out of options, too, so a team can't send him to the minors.

Maybe the White Sox?

Now that Hanley was DFA's does his salary count towards the luxury tax?
Steve Adams
2:16
Still will, yeah. Unless another team picks it up (which obviously isn't happening). Rusney Castillo's doesn't count against their luxury tax based on the terms of the old CBA, as long as he's not on their 40-man, but I believe the new CBA changed that. If the goal is to stop teams from simply buying up all the best talent in the name of competitive balance, then it makes sense to not let the deepest-pocketed teams simply buy their way out by releasing bad contracts.

If that could be done, the Yankees would've already released Ellsbury by now, I'm sure. Dodgers would've operated much differently this offseason as well.

The Yankees have to be concerned with Andujar’s lack of walks right?
Steve Adams
2:18
I doubt it's a huge long-term concern for them just yet. He barely even has experience in AAA. Of course they'd like to see more walks, but they're clearly fine with his approach for the time being. It'll be an area of focus moving forward, but if they thought it was a massive issue they wouldn't have optioned Drury to Scranton.

Could Sergio Romo beat the Rays record of 34 starts in a season this year?
Steve Adams
2:18
Ha! Hadn't thought of that. God I hope so.
I love Sergio Romo as "The Opener"
Oscar
2:18
Will Swihart see more time now, if so what position?
Steve Adams
2:18
I imagine he'll be able to pick up a few extra plate appearances at DH and 1B, but he still doesn't look like he has a future there to me.

Despite having the most wins in the NL, who besides Hader is an All Star for this team?
Steve Adams
2:19
Cain? Yelich? Jeffress? Do you really need multiple All-Stars? I suppose some people care more about that... All-Star voting and All-Star appearances have never much mattered to me.

If another team picks up Hanley, does his cumulative at bats still count toward the Red Sox having to pay for his option?
Steve Adams
2:20
If a team signs Hanley after he's released, his current contract basically goes in the dumpster, with the Red Sox paying all but the pro-rated league minimum. If they acquire him via trade/waivers,
Whoops
2:21
If a team acquires him via trade/waivers for some inexplicable reason, the option would remain in play, but the new team would be on the hook for it, barring an even MORE inexplicable agreement by the Red Sox to cover that cost.
Basically, he's going to be released, and the remaining technicalities don't really matter. He'll sign somewhere, get the league min with the Sox paying the rest of the $15MM+ he's owed, and the option will be moot.

Hi Steve, If the Nats fell out of the race could it be possible that they would try to trade Bryce Harper and at least get something for him instead if him just walking this offseason?
Steve Adams
2:22
The Nats aren't going to fall out of the race, and they'd probably just keep Harper, keep trying, and take the draft pick when he rejects a qualifying offer even if they're a fringe contender in July.
