They are very much stuck with him right now
Phillies situation

Lots of stuff about their bullpen, but aren’t they missing an outfield piece too? Even better depth than W Wilson?
Steve Adams
1:53
Yeah, they could definitely use a RHH OF who can help out. They like Wilson a lot, but it's not like he has a long track record of hitting LHP in the majors and the returns this season are pretty lackluster (granted, in something like 25 PAs). Bullpen seems like a more pronounced need, but it'll be one of multiple areas they're pursuing upgrades.

Should Tigers trade Tarik Skubal in Winter of '25-'26 to receive a Juan Soto to the Padres like return of a  truck full of top young talent and top prospects rather that let Skubul walk as a free agent @ the end of '26 and settle for only qualifying offer and a draft pick?!
Steve Adams

The Tigers presumably view themselves as a team whose World Series window is open beginning this year. Trading Skubal, even for a big return, puts a dent into that.

They'll hang onto him and try to cash in on these two (well, one and two-thirds) remaining seasons of club control in a big way.

Detroit isn't in the same situation San Diego was. The Padres traded Soto because their long-term payroll was a nightmare with Tatis, Bogaerts, Darvish, Musgrove, Cronenworth, etc. all signed and they weren't going to re-sign Soto to a record deal on top of all that.

The Tigers could absolutely pay top-of-the-market money to sign Skubal long-term after 2026.

Ha, a friend and I were just chatting about this over the long weekend after he laughed about how bad Angels In The Outfield is in retrospect.

Who’s breakout, in the long term sense, are you buying more? Hunter Brown or Jesus Luzardo? Or both to the same degree?
Steve Adams
1:57
Brown. Luzardo is immensely talented but has already had so many injuries.
1:58
I think they're both great pitchers on a per-inning basis, I just feel Brown is likelier to hold up. (Not that any pitcher is likely to hold up in 2025, ha)

Here we sit at the bottom of the nl central and under .500. Knowing that my star player is uninterested in signing an extension with us, should I trade  Elly to Seattle or the Dodgers for a load of their top prospects?
Steve Adams

I would love the chaos that 4+ years of EDLC on the trade block would bring, but I don't see any way the Reds entertain that thought, no.

And for what it's worth -- I'm sure you were just being hyperbolic, but still -- they're in the middle not the bottom. No one's catching Pittsburgh at the bottom anytime soon. A 6.5-game deficit from the Cubs in first place is hardly insurmountable, but I do agree that the Reds need some work, particularly on the lineup

What would you do with the roster, if you were GM of the Astros?  Have to move Framber, right?
Steve Adams
2:03
Framber will be an interesting one this summer, but I don't think the Astros would move him unless they're much further out of it than their current 1.5-game gap. If they're sitting 8+ games out of first, it becomes much easier. If they're like 5-6 games back as deadline day approaches, they're going to have a tough call, especially if Jim Crane is still holding firm to not exceeding the tax threshold.

Now eight games under and heading south, do the A's move Miller for some top prospects?
Steve Adams
2:05
They still control him for 4 years after the current season and probably feel like they'd be selling low (at least based on his current numbers). He'll be a Super 2 player, so he's going to make a fair bit in arbitration this winter, but that'll only help them keep their CBT number up to avoid potential MLBPA grievances. I don't think he'll be moved, but I do expect plenty of talk about it and probably some teams trying to float tempting offers.

Should the A's try to trade Miguel Andujar?  Do you think he has any trade value?  Thanks!
Steve Adams
2:06
On the other side of the coin, yes. Andujar should be as good as gone. He's not great, and he's a free agent at season's end, but he makes plenty of contact and hits the ball hard enough to provide average-ish offense in left field.

A team looking for a cheap left fielder (hey there, Padres) could do worse.
