Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 5/8/18
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams
4:15
He's 34 years old and 900 hits away. I wouldn't call that "on track" -- especially in an environment where most teams look at guys of his age as part-time players in free agency.
4:16
He'd need six more seasons of 150 hits -- I don't think he's getting five years of regular ABs after 2018.

Without a word of a lie, I just bought an Osuna jersey yesterday. Can I still wear it to games?
Steve Adams
4:16
Did you keep your receipt?
Clay
4:17
Do we trade Schoop if he comes back out raking ?
Steve Adams
4:18
They should. The Orioles should trade everything that isn't nailed down. Machado, Britton, Brach, Jones, Schoop, Gausman, Bundy -- gut the roster and go for a quick turnaround rather than taking the Reds' approach of hanging onto guys too long.

Here's another 1500 or so words on the subject

Based on this chat and others I've seen.... everyone seems to think that Matt Harvey is still the Dark Knight... He's not, he's  a different pitcher. He cannot overpower anymore. Until HE chooses to change and learn to pitch, he'll continue to struggle.
Steve Adams
4:20
Yeah, this isn't a thing where a change of scenery is going to magically right the ship, I don't think.

BUT, I also think it's unfair to suggest that he's holding himself back. There's basically one pitcher who's come back from TOS surgery and had multiple good big league seasons (Jaime Garcia). It just doesn't have a high success rate.

For instance, Phil Hughes has completely changed his pitch selection twice, tried to start throwing a changeup, tried to become a ground-ball guy -- none of it has worked. TOS is just a killer

Think i  can get Allard from Braves for Colome?
Steve Adams
4:21
Don't think so, no

Are players paid while they are on DFA status?
Steve Adams
4:22
Yes. They're paid and accrue MLB service time while in DFA "limbo" as we term it here.

Could the Nats move Jeremy Hellickson to the bullpen as long-man to help preserve some of their back-end arms?   Austin Voth or Erik Fedde could replace him as the 5th starter.
Steve Adams
4:24
I'd imagine they have to be rather pleased with how Hellickson has taken to the five spot for now. No real reason to make a change at the moment.

4:25
How long before reds realize 2018 is lost and 2019 won't be any better until they improve pitching? I propose top 4-6 underperforming arms in a tandem rotation setting for 4 inning stints to see which ones can develop into starters and which ones are pen pieces
Steve Adams
4:28
I think they have to be keenly aware that 2018 is already lost.

As far as the pitchers go, at a certain point they need to look internally and ask if they're doing something wrong. So many of the guys they've acquired in trades and drafted have been touted as legitimate pitching prospects, and not a single one of them has yielded even a full season as a league-average starter in the Majors yet. There's some promise with Castillo, Mahle, Romano ... but this group of arms that looked really exciting a year ago has had some of the shine wear off considerably, and I think their difficulty in developing pitching in recent years is worth a deeper internal dive on their behalf.
TOS?
4:28
sorry... whats TOS stand for?
Steve Adams
4:28
Thoracic outlet syndrome

When you state you like the Braves better long term than the Phillies are you taking into account financial flexibility?  Phillies have the money to go get a Harper or Machado... Do the Braves?
Steve Adams
4:29
It's definitely a factor to consider. Obviously, if the Braves sign Harper or Machado next winter, that'll impact things considerably. I'm merely looking at the current talent they have in house and waiting in the minor league ranks when I make that reference, though.

I don't think the Braves would spend to sign Machado or Harper. Could definitely envision an Anthopoulos/Donaldson reunion, though.

FYI: Jays are replacing Osuna's jersey giveaway with Solarte.
Steve Adams
4:30
As they should.

4:31
Out of Goldschmidt, Pollock, and Corbin, who’s in Arizona for the long haul?
Steve Adams
4:31
Goldschmidt is the face of the franchise there -- easier to see them going all out to keep him
4:32
Sorry phone rang
AA
4:33
Who's got a better shot at playing in ATL next season - Machado or Harper?
Steve Adams
4:33
Can I vote neither? I don't see the Braves shelling out $325MM+
Billington
4:33
Longo was the face of the franchise for the Rays and look what happened to him, no guarantee for Goldschmidt!
Steve Adams
4:33
D-backs have quite a bit more financial power than the Rays

4:33
What are the odds Joey Votto is still 2 WAR or above by the time the Reds are actually good again?
Steve Adams
4:34
Votto seems like the guy who'll be an above-average player till he decides he wants to retire. Better question is whether the Reds will actually be good again before he retires.
JT
4:34
Ryan McMahan and Raimel Tapia for Jose Abreu?
Steve Adams
4:34
Think that's more than the Rox would give up.
Casey
4:35
Do you get a lot of people cursing in their comments?
Steve Adams
4:36
Some, but it's easy to skip over them, and I can mute people for the remainder of the chat (without them even knowing). Hooray Jotcast.

4:36
Corey Dickerson. Nice offseason steal, huh.
Steve Adams
4:37
I have no explanation for how Dickerson seemingly just decided that he was never going to strike out again. I don't think he can keep his K rate below 10%, but assuming there's some legitimacy to his contact improvements, yeah he's been a much better pickup than I thought he'd be

Would you ever want to bring back the MLB Traderumors podcast?
Steve Adams
4:40
I enjoyed doing it, but it was a significant investment of time for me and especially for Jeff as the primary host. There were some fun interviews on there, and I did like having a platform to kind of editorialize a bit more than maybe we do in our day-to-day writings here. Our listener level kind of plateaued, though, and we ultimately decided to allocate the resources elsewhere.

There's no immediate plans to bring it back, but I don't think it's out of the question that we fire it up again down the line. Still nice to hear from people who listened and enjoyed our ramblings, so thanks! Ha

MLB pitchers are averaging 5.1 innings per start. Is this the new MLB?
