The Rays offense has been miserable yet they're hanging in there in the tough AL East. Are they going to add another bat ala Cruz last year? And if...who's a possibility?
Steve Adams
2:54
They could just go get Cruz again. The Nats are going to trade him. Josh Bell, also. Red Sox could have some interesting names if they don't right the ship. O's will have Mancini available. Jesus Aguilar and Garrett Cooper in Miami, perhaps.
fascinating
2:54
Scott Barlow on the move this July? Dodgers, perhaps? Kimbrel looks washed
Steve Adams
2:55
Royals control Barlow through 2024 and aren't in the habit of trading guys with multiple years to go like this.
2:56
Phillies expect Jean Segura to miss 10-12 weeks, Joe Girardi just announced. Ouch.

Do you think the Cardinals will go after Frankie Montas and what would the price be
Steve Adams
2:59
I know MLB Network played the Cardinals up as a fit for Montas this morning, but they'll be one of like 10-12 teams in on him and there's nothing that makes St. Louis a uniquely likely suitor or any kind of favorite. I'd assume Nolan Gorman's untouchable at this point, but most of the system after him would have to be in play. Montas has more trade value than Bassitt, Manaea or Chapman did at the time of their trades, and the dearth of quality starters on the summer market is going to artificially inflate the asking price.
The Blue Jays gave up Austin Martin like 13 months after taking him No. 5 overall, plus another well-regarded/borderline top-100 pitching prospect (Simeon Woods-Richardson) to get Jose Berrios in a similar situation a year ago.

Seriously….. how long until a change?   Who would be a good fit as manager to take over this mainly young team???
Steve Adams

They're not going to can Matheny. I was surprised they fired Bradshaw. The Royals are fiercely loyal.
Luis Gonzalez
3:01
Chances of ROY candidacies?
Steve Adams
3:01
For Gonzalez? He's sitting on like a .400 BABIP. I don't think he's a viable candidate. MacKenzie Gore, Spencer Strider, Aaron Ashby, Keibert Ruiz are among the favorites in the NL, off the top of my head.
Billington
3:02
Likelihood of Cole Irvin getting traded as well?
Steve Adams
3:04
Irvin has four years of control post-2022. Montas has one. Irvin also isn't arbitration-eligible yet. I'm not saying there wouldn't be interest, but he's a soft-tossing lefty with a 16% strikeout rate who doesn't limit hard contact at elite levels. I bet several teams would feel he's a huge regression candidate, particularly away from Oakland.
Pirates
3:04
Is David Bednar going to be a top priority for teams at the deadline?
Steve Adams
3:05
Yeah they're going to get an avalanche of interest/offers, but he's another guy with four years of control remaining after this season. It's rare to see established players with THAT much team control moved.
Brian Cashman
3:06
Will I be able to find someone willing to take Joey Gallo off my hands?
Steve Adams
3:06
Someone (Preller probably, because Rangers) will probably roll the dice on a change of scenery, yeah.
Why Pillar?
3:06
Just curious, do MLB teams generally value the predictable performance they would get from a veteran depth piece like a Kevin Pillar over rolling the dice on a younger player?
Steve Adams
3:07
Pillar specifically was probably called up because he's been performing well and had an opt-out in his deal today. If they didn't put him on the roster, they'd have lost him.
IDK - 3rd Base!
3:08
IT's obviously not going to happen, but it's still kind of a fun thing to ponder. If the Nats suddenly were to trade Soto (or any team with a player of that caliber), were a team with a deep enough farm to offer 4 top 100 prospects and 1 or 2 more guys with some upside, would that be in the ballpark for such a player, or would that still be too low?
Steve Adams
3:11
It would just require the type of return we haven't seen for years... multiple MLB-ready top-100 prospects and then some. Like, the Rays giving up Shane Baz, Josh Lowe, Vidal Brujan and some other parts or the Padres giving up Gore, Abrams, Hassell, Campusano, etc.

I really don't even know how to project it, because the return would have to just be so outrageous that no one could question trading one of the most accomplished 23-year-old hitters ever.
