who will trade for me?  What can the Pirates do to improve their pitching?
Steve Adams
3:42
He's more of a DFA/releasecandidate than a trade candidate.
3:43
DFA/release candidate*

Wouldn't it be much better if Yankees would just take Kendrys Morales out of the lineup and go with Gleyber Torres?
Steve Adams
3:43
I thought they'd DFA Kendrys when Gregorius came back.

With Bobby Witt JR in the fold, what kind of haul would the Royals get if they trade Mondesi? Would a Mondi trade made more sense at this point?
Steve Adams
3:45
Bobby Witt was drafted out of high school. He's old for his class, but that's not how any team operates; you're not going to trade a current emerging star because you drafted someone who is, at best, two years away (possibly three or four).

Did you read Rosenthal’s latest? What can be done to address tanking? The CBA rewards losing more than winning unless you’re sure to make the play offs
Steve Adams
3:49
Favorite suggestion that's been made to me came from someone with an agency earlier this year:

First-round draft order is determined by which teams most closely missed the playoffs. So... best non-playoff record picks first. Team with the game's worst record picks 20th. Then the playoff teams.

Beyond that, rounds are determined as currently constructed (worst to best record).

It does kind of suck for a team that is just legitimately terrible in a season where they were otherwise trying, but no team is ever going to be perfect, and that'd put some more pressure on teams to spend in the offseason.

Do I spend my valuable FAAB money on Yordan Alvarez in AL only league? Or do I hold onto it some type of way for another young gun?
Steve Adams
3:49
He hasn't already been claimed?!
I would.

Is Jake Cave a good trade chip for Minnesota?  He played well last year and is tearing up Triple AAA.  No path to play in twins OF unless a major injury.  Would Cave for Will Smith make sense?
Steve Adams
3:51
Giants would aim higher and get more elsewhere. But could Cave be a piece of that deal who interests the Giants? Sure.

Nats need a first baseman, and now Adams is hurt again. Who do you think they could target in the trade market? Mancini for Kieboom sounds like a perfect match (other than the O’s and Nats has blood).
Steve Adams
3:53
I think you're overestimating Mancini's value, personally. The Nats could just rent Encarnacion or Smoak if they were going to add a first baseman. And yeah, I don't think you'll see the Nats/O's line up on a deal of that magnitude.

Will Smith for Will Smith. Who says no?
Steve Adams
3:53
As much as I'd love that deal, ha, the Dodgers wouldn't give up their Will Smith for a couple months of the Giants' Will Smith.
The guy
3:54
You should do a "one trade that would make each team better " kind of post.
Steve Adams
3:55
There are a million trades that'd make any given team better -- suggesting that there's one specific deal that teams should make doesn't make a lot of sense to me when they're all exploring so many avenues.

The Jays pitching is awful and there is no one at Buffalo. Why would they think of trading Stroman and Sanchez?
Steve Adams
3:56
Because they're terrible right now, both will be free agents after 2020, and both could bring back the type of younger arms they currently lack

3:56
With Odorizzi ,Gibson, and Pineda free agents after the season, don't the Twins have to go all in.
Steve Adams
3:57
Pineda hasn't really contributed much to their current success. Losing both those guys would hurt, but the Twins have at least one pretty intriguing arm on the horizon (Brusdar Graterol) and several upper-level depth options. Plus some pretty notable payroll flexibility in the offseason to pursue either reunions or upgrades.

What's your take on Danny Farquhar being promoted to the Yankees Triple A?
Steve Adams
3:58
How can you not be pulling for him?
gelo
3:59
FYI Kendrys is still playing for the Yankees
Steve Adams
4:00
I'm aware. I said I thought he WOULD have been DFA'ed when Didi returned. In other words -- yes, I think most alternatives presented would be beneficial to the Yankees.

4:01
On Tucker...how do you think the Astros should go about trying to force him into the fold now? Feel like a Reddick trade would make sense...but that’s not really something you can do right now
Steve Adams
4:04
He's 22 -- I guess I don't think they need to force him into the mix. They could eventually just move Yuli to a utility/bench role, give Alvarez first base and rotate Brantley, Springer, Reddick, Tucker through the OF and DH spots. Injuries are basically inevitable as well. I don't think it's a long-term problem really; he still has a minor league option remaining even into 2020.

4:04
How about Bud Norris - is there a story there? Is he toast?
Steve Adams
4:04
He thought he was ready to pitch at the big league level, interested teams seemed to disagree. Not sure where that leaves him at the moment, but he's not signed.
Hm....
4:04
Most over-hyped commodity in baseball is...?
Steve Adams
4:05
Prospects in general?

Which is funny, because one of the most underhyped commodities (at least by fans), seems to be top prospects who don't immediately hit the ground running and dominate at their respective positions. You're either an immediate, Acuna/Tatis-style success or you're a "bust" who needs to be traded.

4:07
Shouldn't the Pirates trade both Dickerson and Melky and roll with Marte, Polanco and Reynolds as regulars?
Steve Adams
4:08
I don't think Melky's going to return all that much. I'd go with the three you presented, I suppose, but I do also think if they're way out of it in late July, they should open the bidding on Marte.

The PIrates are never going to be big spenders under current ownership, and Marte's salary will jump to $11.5MM next year. If you're the Phillies, who look increasingly likely to be done with Odubel Herrera, two and a half affordable years of Marte looks awfully appealing.
Adam Stevens
4:09
Could the Pirates get a top 100 prospect for either Dickerson or Melky? Maybe a team desperate for an OF?
Steve Adams
4:11
Nope -- corner OFs generally don't have a lot of trade value, and Dickerson is relatively expensive/has been hurt while Melky is a journeyman with minimal defensive value whose offensive output has been buoyed by a huge spike in average on balls in play.

Once again you answer the dumbest questions.  And half the time don’t answer the question at all.  That Bot someone was referring to wound do a better job I believe

And yet you read on.
