DRAFT LOTTERY
2:08
STEVE, CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE CHANGES TO THE DRAFT NOW??  The team with the worst record still or is no longer guaranteed the first overall pick ( to discourage tanking? )???
Steve Adams
2:08
Revenue-sharing recipients can't have a lottery (top-six) pick more than two years in a row. Non-rev sharing teams can't have a lottery pick in back-to-back years. Teams not eligible for the lottery can't pick higher than 10th.
2:09
So just like the White Sox are stuck picking 10th this year, the Rockies will be in 2026.

Does Michael Conforto have something over MLB that he's using as blackmail? He hasn't been much better than a replacement-level player since 2020 (and missed one full season to injury), yet he keeps getting double-digit-million contracts every year and a seemingly endless number of chances. What am I missing?
Steve Adams
2:10
Conforto was very good in 2020 (and for his whole career to that point, more or less). Had a down year in 2021 then missed 2022 because of shoulder surgery. Giants gave him an inexplicable two-year deal with an opt-out -- take a bow, Scott Boras -- during which he looked like a shell of himself until about the trade deadline last year. He absolutely mashed down the stretch and got himself another big one-year deal.
Dodgers are paying him $17MM, he's walking a ton and hitting the ball hard. I get not wanting to cut bait, and even though the recent numbers  are rough again, he had a decent little surge in mid-May that probably bought him some more rope.

I know that the Red Sox signed Cora to an extension, but how long can this go on?
Steve Adams
2:11
They're not firing him two months into a three-year contract

Andrew McCutchen quietly has a .770 OPS and the batted ball data back ups the performance. Pirates have seemingly been content to just let him finish his days out with the org, but do you think the Bucs will shop him around this summer if he keeps hitting well? I can't imagine the value is particularly high given the age and the fact he mostly DH's now, but with few tradeable assets worth much on that roster, he seems like someone that wouldn't mind trying to chase a ring in the 2nd half elsewhere.
Steve Adams
2:12
Cutch has said he has no interest in playing elsewhere.
I suppose he hasn't expressly said it this season, but he's said it in each of the past few years after re-signing in Pittsburgh. He loves the city and the team. Wants to go out there. Good on him.

2:13
I’m feeling like I may be on the move, what say you?
Steve Adams
2:13
Think it's far likelier that Suarez is traded and Lawlar gets everyday 3B reps from August onward.

Red Sox acquire: Taijuan Walker/Mick Abel/Otto Kemp. Phillies acquire: Aroldis Chapman/Rob Refsnyder. Who says no?
Steve Adams
2:14
Phils aren't giving up Abel to rent Chapman and Refsnyder, and the money saved on Walker isn't enough to change that thinking
Oriole bum
2:14
Anyone without club control on Orioles need to be traded if any value or try to be extended.. Elfin should be extended for 2 more years if possible. Maybe even Sugano to a lesser extent unless they don’t want to contend next year.. what do u think???
Steve Adams
2:16
I don't see any way Eflin signs a two-year guarantee. As long as he finishes the season healthy, he's got another three-year deal at least. Sugano, maybe, but I wouldn't extend a guy with a 14% strikeout rate and 7.5% swinging-strike rate.

Generally agree, anyone on short-term control -- O'Hearn, Eflin, Dominguez, Soto, Mullins, Kittredge -- should be on the block. I know the O's are saying they're not ready to sell, but I cannot see them turning this ship around in 2025.

Who brings back a better return for the Red Sox, OF Duran or  OF Abreu?
Steve Adams
2:17
Duran, but neither gets traded.

Which callup will have the biggest impact moving forward?
Steve Adams
2:18
Among the guys already called up? Jac Caglianone gets my vote. Kansas City's outfield is atrocious.

Giants trade for a power bat at the deadline? Is Ryan o hearn a reasonable target?
Steve Adams
2:21
O'Hearn is a reasonable target for the Giants. And the Mariners. And the Twins. Padres. Red Sox. Etc.
Pretty much any team that needs a bat.
Ice cream
2:21
Favorite ice cream at a ball park?
Steve Adams
2:22
Most ice cream is good ice cream, except abominations like cotton candy or Superman or any of those weird multi-colored, cloyingly sweet nonsense varieties made to market to toddlers, haha

Can I still have a shot at rookie of the year if I get going and play well?  What is reasonable stat line in a perfect world?
Steve Adams
2:24
He's going to have a real hard time trying to run down Jacob Wilson when Wilson has a 245 PA head start and is hitting .355/.393/.504.

Hope I'm not putting a huge jinx on him or anything, but if Wilson were to get hurt tonight and miss the next 2.5 months or something, sure, but otherwise it's hard not to call him an overwhelming favorite over someone who's just getting the call.

Could see Shane Smith, Will Warren or Jack Leiter (my pre-season pick, not looking great! oops) go on a huge run to make it more interesting, but Wilson's my easy favorite right now

All these people clamoring for O'Hearn. Can I interest you in a Burleson. Cheaper, under control for 4 more years. We have too many lefties as it sits.
Steve Adams
2:28
Burleson is hitting .279/.327/.403 to ROH's .329/.416.535. They're both LHH 1B/corner OF/DH types (sparingly in the corners), but that's really where the similarities end.

Burleson is a solid young hitter with some control, but he's more the type of player I'd expect as a Plan B for a clear contender looking for short-term maximum upgrades in the lineup. A club like the Guardians, Rangers or Nats -- looking as much beyond 2025 as at 2025 -- feels like a better fit for him.

If the Cards move him. Which ... there's really no indication they will. But I get listing him and wondering.

If Jacob Wilson goes down with a major injury in the next day or two, I will eat a Carolina Reaper on the MLBTR Podcast to atone for my sins.

Can there be anything more disheartening than getting cut from the Rockies
Steve Adams
2:31
Griding through like 12 minor league seasons and never getting a call to the show?

Being a diehard baseball fan who is so gangly and uncoordinated that you begrudgingly accept that the only sports you're going to be good at in high school/college are track and cross country, caving in and joining both your junior year in high school?

Not speaking from experience on that last one or anything though. Nope. Not at all. Haha.

2:31
could the reds add george springer at the deadline? he has all the qualities the reds need and would be huge for the offense. what would the return package look like?
Steve Adams
2:33
Springer is hitting .182/.312/.390 over his past 100 plate appearances, and I cannot fathom the Reds taking on the remainder of his salary.
