Steve Adams

Greeting! Apologies on the late start. In the interest of full disclosure, I legitimately didn't realize today was Tuesday. Does anyone ever even know what day it is anymore?
6:03
Anyhow, we have real, actual transactions happening and -- knock on wood -- players reporting to camp as soon as Friday
6:04
Let's discuss!

Any reason I try to sign Puig to a 1 year deal with maybe a fairly high 2nd year option to try to find a sparkplug and some potential rental trade value for my rebuilding bucs?
Steve Adams
6:05
The "reason" would be that the Pirates, as presently constructed, look like a bad baseball team. But the Pirates aren't especially concerned with winning in 2020, it doesn't seem, and Bob Nutting of all owners seems unlikely to add any salary in a Puig deal.

I think they should absolutely go for it. They won't, of course, but I'd support that.

I am confused. Will Mike Leake earn any money sitting out the season? Will he forfit his entre prorated salary?
Steve Adams
6:06
He will not be paid any of his prorated salary or accrue any service time -- as I wrote in yesterday's post on his decision.

He *will* still be owed the $5MM buyout on his 2021 option.

Does Kelenic see time for the Mariners in this shortened season?
Steve Adams
6:07
I would bet against it unless the Mariners are unexpectedly contending after a hot start.
Dominic
6:07
With no minor league season, should rosters expand to 30?
Steve Adams
6:07
Active rosters already did expand to 30 players
6:08
They'll go back down to 28 after 15 days and down to 26 after 29 days
Casey Mize
6:08
Am I on the Tigers Opening Day roster this season?
Steve Adams
6:08
Don't think so but wouldn't be surprised to see any of Mize, Manning or Skubal in the bigs at some point

Will we search for outfield help?
Steve Adams
6:11
Already have Carlson, O'Neill, Thomas, Miller, Dean, Williams as options in LF with Bader and Fowler in the other slots. And if they were going to add someone of note, I have to think they'd have done it in the offseason.

If their OF is bombing after four weeks, maybe they'll consider some changes -- but prior to the year I doubt it.

Is there any reason to think the next CBA won't be a complete dumpster fire?
Steve Adams
6:12
I dunno, this most recent wave of negotiations went pretty smoothl--
:(
I think it'll be a trainwreck
Brian Snitker
6:13
Who should I use as my primary DH?
Steve Adams
6:14
I'd imagine the Braves will rotate Markakis, Duvall, Acuna and Ozuna through the corners and DH, with Acuna in the field almost every day (and in the lineup itself daily, barring injury).

Most NL teams won't have one set DH.

6:14
odds someone hits .400 in shortened season? I mean, this is the year it could happen? Or maybe a starter with an ERA below 1.12 or a reliever who doesn’t allow a run all season?
Steve Adams
6:15
Maybe -- but it wouldn't go into the record books anyhow. Won't be enough ABs or IP to qualify in a 162-game season.

I kind of doubt the .400 anyway ... when was the last time someone was hitting even .375 a couple of months into the season?

Ian opting out. Universal DH. Timing right for Kemp. Can we expect revival @ Coors ?
Steve Adams
6:16
He's not even guaranteed a roster spot. Let's see how camp shakes out first.
Dave Roberts
6:17
Do any of my 2020 draft picks make their debut this season?
Steve Adams
6:17
I could see Max Meyer (Marlins) or Reid Detmers (Angels) coming up, yeah.
6:18
Maybe some of the pure relief guys (e.g. Cubs/Burl Carraway)
Kurt
6:18
When will the teams who did not announce all 60 of their player pool announce the rest of them?
Steve Adams
6:20
They'll trickle in gradually. There was a misconception at first -- here included -- that they needed to submit a full 60 this weekend. That's not the case and we tried to distance ourselves from that, but I do think a lot of fans were expecting that still.

They can add players throughout camp, and some teams will want to maintain flexibility for waiver claims, free-agent deals for guys who are released elsewhere, etc.
Bobby Jackson
6:21
The Braves have a strong young nucleus. Any chances they make a play on an elite free agent this offseason with their young guys locked up on “team friendly” contracts.
Steve Adams
6:24
Their preference under Anthopoulos to date has pretty clearly been to avoid major, long-term commitments. Hard to see them going too aggressive at the top of this year's upcoming class.

There will be some older guys in free agency after the 2021 season though -- Verlander, Greinke -- and I wouldn't be surprised to see teams like the Braves and Dodgers go hard at premium salary levels since those players' ages will limit the length of a deal.

Can a club begin the actual season with less than 60 players in its Player Pool?
Steve Adams
6:25
Sure. That'd free them up to make an in-season waiver claim without having to release/waive a player of their own.
Justin Verlander
6:25
Should I go back to Detroit when my contract is up and teach Mize, Manning and Skubal the ways of the force?
Steve Adams
6:26
I'm sure he'll just go to whichever contender he thinks will give him the best shot at another ring. That doesn't seem likely to be Detroit at that point, though. Not a knock on them -- just saying a lot would need to go right very quickly for Verlander to think they're a viable World Series contender.

If a player is moved from the active roster to the player pool do you they use up an option?
Steve Adams
6:27
Yes. Standard option rule apply. Similarly, if a club wants to send an out-of-options player down to the non-active roster/alternate training site, they'd need to go through the DFA/outright process.

What is the most un-breakable record in MLB history in your mind? Most breakable record?
