Let's say the season is lost for the Twins, shocking I know. Short of rental pieces, what could they expect for near free agents? Berrios doesn't seem like he'll ever be a #1 starter

Berrios doesn't have to be a true #1, and he was never really expected to be that as a prospect. A lot of Twins fans seemed to believe that was the case -- I'm a Minnesota native and resident -- but go look at any scouting report from his days as a top prospect. "Legitimate ace" was never the expectation. Even for guys where that IS the expectation, that rarely comes to pass. Berrios is an above-average pitcher. A fine No. 2 or No. 3 starter on a good team. He'll make 10MM-ish next year, which is more than reasonable for that.

I don't think the Twins will trade anyone outside of rental players.

Are the Royals good enough to push for a wildcard? Their offense is good 1-4 but after that there’s not much. Bullpen is okay and starters are young. Is it gonna take time or are we looking at one piece away from contending?

Some team might sign him, especially if the NL adds the DH, but a .280 OBP isn't going to cut it once his homer rate drops; he's not going to keep going deep every 11-12 PAs with the Dodgers.
