Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 7/10/19
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams
4:10
Hope the All-Star spectacle has been enjoyable for all! Apologies on not chatting in my usual spot yesterday -- wasn't able to make it work, but we'll do a makeup today and return to normal scheduling (3pm ET / 2pm CT) next Tuesday!
Kaitlyn
4:11
Who was your pick for All-Star Game MVP?
Steve Adams
4:11
It's one game and most players get a max of 2 ABs or 2 IP. I've always found naming an MVP kind of laughable.
Doh!
4:11
Are the Marlins going to sign either of their first two 1st round picks?
Steve Adams
4:12
No indication that a deal won't come together. I've seen Marlins beat writers, national reporters and MLB draft specialists all say they expect both to sign.
Don Mossi
4:12
Yanks more likely to add Stroman or Bauer?
Steve Adams
4:12
I think Stroman, in general, is likelier to be traded so he'd get my vote.
Mike
4:13
Do you see Huntington doing anything to help with the pitching staff or is it the same old stuff in Pittsburgh?
Steve Adams
4:15
"same old stuff" isn't really a fair take less than 12 months after getting Archer and Kela. Both moves have panned out poorly to date, for different reasons, but they certainly didn't sit on their hands last summer.

I do think the Bucs will add some bullpen help and perhaps a starter, but they'll probably also sell off some MLB assets (Dickerson comes to mind)
Zaidi
4:15
Could I net 2 top-100 + other prospects if I packaged Bum and Smith in the same trade?
Steve Adams
4:17
Two guys in the back-end of that range maybe. But generally speaking, prospect rankings and perceptions within the industry are in such a state of constant flux that I'd say you're doing yourself a disservice if you're beholden to getting two guys who fall within a certain range on a list that's just a snapshot in time.

4:17
Do you think that the Mets will sell
Steve Adams
4:17
Yup
Redsfan
4:17
would you entertain trying to negotiate a three-year deal with Roark while he's still on your roster and before July 31?
Steve Adams
4:19
You're buying his age 33-35 seasons in that scenario, which is probably later in his career than they'd prefer to commit. Roark is a fine midrotation guy, but it's quite possible his negotiating power is at its apex right now. I wouldn't be offering that, no.

4:20
More likely to land Will Smith for the bullpen, Dodgers or Braves? What are the odds ATL tries to swing a deal to reunite with Mike Minor?
Steve Adams
4:22
Braves are outside the division so I'd give the nod to them. Either way, Zaidi (Giants' president) is negotiating with a guy he worked directly alongside just two years ago, which doesn't mean a ton but is anecdotally interesting.

Rangers can't move Minor right now when they're playing this well. If they drop nine straight or something, perhaps, but that doesn't seem at all likely to me.

Is AJ Reed a good addition to the White Sox?
Steve Adams
4:23
Sure. I was surprised a team with a worse record in a similar situation didn't pick him up. The Tigers are trotting John Hicks out there regularly. KC couldn't part with Duda? I like it for the Sox
Chris
4:23
Red Sox in on pitchers like Wheeler? I don't see it.
Steve Adams
4:24
"Pitchers like Wheeler" = talented, relatively young and affordable ... why wouldn't they be interested?
Marc
4:24
Do you think Theo might trade Bryant?
Steve Adams
4:24
Can't see virtually any scenario where that plays out, no
SF
4:25
Over/Under 6.5 Giants traded by August 1
Steve Adams
4:25
I'll take the under, but I had to stop and think about it! Ha
Vin Scully
4:25
Dodgers get which reliever?
Steve Adams
4:26
The Dodgers don't even know the answer to that! How can I?

I do expect them to look harder at lefties than righties. No reason to think they'll only get one bullpen arm, either.
Steve
4:26
What do the Twins do to fend off Cleveland?
Steve Adams
4:29
They're still up 5.5 games. Cleveland has been playing the Orioles, Tigers and Royals of late while MN has had a tougher schedule, three long extra-innings games and some injuries in the lineup (Cruz, Marwin, Rosario). They'll add some bullpen help and quite possibly a starter, but I think the panic in MN over Cleveland closing the gap is misplaced. They were never going to win the division by 15 games or something.

Not taking away from Cleveland's recent run of success, to be clear; just saying this type of thing was foreseeable and probably hasn't put the Twins' decisionmakers into panic mode

4:29
Would you trade Hunter Renfroe for Noah Syndegard and would that be a fair trade for both teams?
Steve Adams
4:30
I wouldn't trade Thor for Renfroe alone and doubt the Mets would either.
Scherzer
4:31
Would a package of Whitley and Tucker get it done?
Steve Adams
4:32
Nats are a wild card team right now. They're not selling.
And Scherzer was never likely to go even when there was talk of them maybe dealing Rendon or Doolittle when things were spiraling
Tex
4:33
Braves starters have only recorded one out, three times, in the eighth inning or later this entire year. Is this typical of most teams now?
Steve Adams
4:34
I don't have that data in front of me at the moment, but yeah, I don't think many teams have guys pitch into the 8th and 9th with ay degree of regularity anymore.
JB
4:34
Where does Russell Westbrook get traded to?
Steve Adams
4:34
"Timberwolves, obviously," said the MN resident and former Wolves season ticket holder who is generally clueless about NBA trades.
ATX Halo
4:34
Angels buyers or sellers at deadline?
Steve Adams
4:36
I just can't see them climbing back into this with how poorly things have gone. But I also don't think they have all that much of interest to sell. Maybe they're the type of team that acquires a cheap back-of-the-rotation arm (e.g. Cashner) and just hopes to go on a run. I don't think it'll be an overly active deadline for them.
