Godley and Dozier were on minor league deals. If the Orioles made them an MLB offer, I'm sure they'd take it. Puig is tougher to read; he's surely still looking MLB deal, probably has an asking price in mind and might prefer to sign with a contender.

Are the Mariners not getting enough credit for their pitching depth? They have a lot of talent plus bounce back candidates in walker and graveman
Steve Adams
3:35
Their rotation has tons of upside but virtually no certainty. I think it's generally portrayed pretty fairly.
jordan groshan
3:35
will he get a chance to play in mlb this year?
Steve Adams
3:35
Groshans has played 23 games in A-ball, and that's his only experience above Rookie ball. I can't imagine him getting to the Majors this season, no.
Martin

With Daniel Norris probably out for start of the season, is there any chance Casey Mize makes the opening rotation ?
Steve Adams
3:37
Boyd-Fulmer-Zimmermann-Nova-Turnbull will be the starting five to begin the year (health permitting)
Not necessarily in that order, either, just saying those five. (Though I'm sure Boyd will get the opener)

Looking back on previous years, 60 game stretches have been pretty insane. Out of all the teams you think will be in the bottom of their devisions, the Tigers, Giants, Marlins, Orioles, etc. Who do you think has a chance to surprise everyone with a crazy playoff push?
Steve Adams
3:39
I like the Marlins' young starters, but that's a pretty stacked division. Blue Jays aren't really at the bottom, but with all the young talent they have, they strike me as more plausible than most fourth/fifth place teams (stacked division caveat applies here as well).

Have there been any trade deadlines set for this upcoming season?
Steve Adams
3:39
Aug. 3

31***
sorry
August 31 -- just to be extra clear.

Why does Yusei Kikuchi have a rotation spot? His numbers are even more frightening if you factor out the complete game shutout he got lucky and threw that one time
Steve Adams
3:44
Because the Mariners signed him to a multi-year deal and believe in his stuff and raw ability more than the numbers he posted in a season where he was transitioning to a new country and pitching on a new routine, etc.

Also -- how are you discerning that he "got lucky" to shut out the Jays in Toronto? He had a dozen quality starts last year, including multiple games where he went 7 innings and allowed one run. The overall numbers aren't great, but it's not like he had one good start in 2020. And he was one of the best pitchers in Japan prior to that.
MadBum
3:44
Off the top of your head: is MadBum a HOFer?
Steve Adams
3:46
I think the postseason heroics will get him there, but I question whether he'll ever return to his pre-dirt-bike levels of performance, and that might ultimately weigh down the overall body of work.
CY Young
3:47
What if Michael Lorenzen pitches in all sixty games like he proposed on Twitter...2.50 ERA, pitching in every game, CY would have to go to a relief pitcher, right? Almost like Cabrera getting MVP with the triple crown
Steve Adams
3:49
He's not going to pitch every game. David Bell already said that won't happen, and even if he did ... what if Jacob deGrom throws 90 innings with a lower ERA, better strikeout numbers, etc.?

Cabrera winning MVP that year based solely on the Triple Crown was ridiculous. I hope voters have moved past that.
Mark Feinsand from MLB.com just reported Puig signing with Braves
Joe
3:52
Puig on the Braves solidifies their position at the top of the NL East, no?
Steve Adams
3:54
It doesn't hurt them, but he was basically a league-average bat last year. If he bounces back to being 15-20% better than league average, like he was in 2017-18, I'd buy that argument more. Still like the move for them. Lose Markakis, add an average-or-better bat to replace him in the OF rotation. Depth is good. Jersey sales are good. Good on the Braves

Don't answer silly questions like "When is the trade deadline"?  Google will give that.  Answer questions about things that we care about like why my former man (Michael Kopech) opted out and he is truly 'okay'.
Steve Adams
3:56
Michael Kopech didn't discuss his decision. I have no idea what his reasons are, but I respect his and any other player's decision to opt out. Is that a better use of my time than taking 10 seconds to answer when the deadline is?
Miggy
3:56
Wait, who should have won the MVP in 2012 instead of me? Trout had inferior offensive numbers across the board, excluding stolen bases.
Steve Adams
3:57
Defense and baserunning exist. (Trout also had a slightly better OBP, though that minor difference wasn't particularly glaring)
3:59
The whole argument "we haven't seen a Triple Crown winner in decades!" was nonsense. Like ... if Josh Hamilton had hit two more home runs, then Cabrera wasn't the MVP?

Can we have a poll on whether or not people think MadBum should or will make the hall?
Steve Adams

Is MadBum a Hall of Famer?

Yup (41.2% | 77 votes)

Nah (58.8% | 110 votes)

Twins announce Byron Buxton only has a sprain. He's day to day. Dodged a bullet there, it seems. He was carted off the field last night
Braves
4:01
What position would Puig play with the Braves? They currently have Acuna as the right fielder?
Steve Adams
4:02
Acuna can also play center. I'm sure they'll rotate OFs through the DH spot. They'll work it out.
Sept 1
4:03
Do the rosters expand to the originally new number of 28 on Sept 1 or do they stay at 26 when they get to there?
Steve Adams
4:03
30 man rosters to open the season
Drops to 28 after 15 days
Drops to 26 (and stays there) after 29 days

On BB reference the most similar players to MadBum are Johnny Cueto, Jose Rijo and John Tudor.  So - despite his amazing post-season record, I think he's probably just out.
Steve Adams
4:05
He's also only 30 (well, 31 next month). I think he'll end up at 50+ WAR with tons of postseason accolades and be an interesting case. Some people are commenting "You can't vote him in based on five games", but that undersells him.

He's appeared in 16 postseason games, 102 1/3 innings and has a 2.11 ERA.
That's pretty insane
And his relief appearance against the Royals on two days rest is one of the best playoff performances ever.
