Why would I trade just Bryant? Shouldn't it be all or nothing with him, Rizzo, Baez, Davies and Pederson?
Steve Adams
3:02
I didn't mean to imply Bryant only would go. I think he's the likeliest of the "core" group. Pederson and Davies will absolutely be on the market, too, though Davies' value is pretty thin.
He's been durable, but he's going less than 5 IP per start with career-worst K% and BB%
He's last in the Majors in K-BB%
3:03
Not a great set of stats for a guy making $8.625MM

I'm kinda over it. Should I push all my chips in and go all in on this year?
Steve Adams
3:04
The A's should be busting their butts to acquire Nelson Cruz as we speak. Don't know that they are, but they should be.

Really, with their core guys getting so expensive in arbitration, this is the time for Oakland to make a strong push. You've got Olson, Chapman, Bassitt and Manaea all up for their final arb raises this winter. It's going to be an expensive class.
So, yeah, go for it now.
(Or just, you know, actually pay the guys and spend some money this winter, but we're talking about A's ownership, so...)

Seriously, I can't imagine the Tigers trading Schoop.  They are in a position to be competitive and you're not going to get much for him.
Steve Adams
3:05
I can see them holding him because the offers are light. I agree, he won't bring a ton in a trade.
Manny
3:06
If the Yanks decide to sell, who would you expect on the block?
Steve Adams
3:08
Zack Britton, because the luxury hit is pretty substantial. Chapman if they could find a taker (doubtful). I'm sure they'd listen on Gleyber, but it's hard to sell low on someone that talented. Gary Sanchez. All of the impending free agents. They'd get a good return for Chad Green probably.

Yankees fans seem to want a fire sale. I don't see it happening really. They'd be selling low across the board, which is sort of what happens when the whole team underperforms in unison.

which rule goes 7th inng double header or man on2nd in etra inng
Steve Adams
3:08
I expect both to be gone, based on Manfred's comments this week.

3:08
Will the Giants go after another impact bat? Pederson is a Farhan guy isn’t he?
Steve Adams
3:09
He played with Zaidi's Dodgers, yeah, but Pederson is hitting .230/.300/.418
He's a platoon outfielder who hasn't really hit right-handers much in 2021.

What do you see the reds doing at deadline. Also do you think Castallonos opts out after the season.
Steve Adams
3:10
Looking for affordable SS and RP upgrades. Yes to Castellanos opting out.

Starling Marte....staying or going?
Steve Adams
3:12
If Marte's asking price is really something like $48-50MM over three to four years, and the Marlins trade him anyway, then they were never serious about extending him in the first place.

I think they should extend him. I think it's likelier they trade him.

Me & Moreland for Nelson Cruz straight up?
Steve Adams
3:13
Twins wouldn't want Moreland back. Likelier the A's just DFA him. Though I suppose including him could be a financial counterweight of sorts.

I have a hard time imagining they'd part with Puk for a rental, even if the injuries have obviously dimmed his stock.

Which player traded will bring back the most value?
Steve Adams
3:15
Probably some cost-controlled young player that no one is even looking at or expecting to be traded. Zach Plesac or Cedric Mullins or someone. Nearly every deadline there's a late addition to the trade market that makes everyone kind of say, "Wait what?"

Has AA given out big extensions in the past, or would Freeman be a first?
Steve Adams
3:18
They took what was, at the time, a pretty big risk by extending Bautista in Toronto after his breakout was still a pretty small sample (five years, $65MM -- but again, that was more money at the time in 2012 or whenever it was than it is now). Ozuna doesn't really count as an extension, but he ultimately paid to keep him.

Freeman would be in a new tier as for as Anthopoulos extensions, though.

Hi Steve how many questions are in the queue usually?
Steve Adams
3:19
Several hundred? I don't have a count for questions but we've had more than 1000 readers asking during the chat.
Usually by the time the deadline rolls around we're up to like 2500+ people per chat, so sorry for the many, many questions I'm not getting to.

What are some moves the red Sox's can make to stay in contention?
Steve Adams
3:22
They have basically zero room with regard to the luxury tax, so it depends on whether they can convince a partner to take on all the money in a deal. They could use a rotation upgrade, some bullpen depth, second base/first base help.

If the front office can't get ownership approval to cross the tax line, I'd be trying to sell Richards' contract by attaching a prospect to him. New team could have two months to try to get him right and make an $8.5MM net decision on him if he turns it around. If not, they bought a decent prospect for a few million.

For a team like the Cardinals, Mariners, Twins, etc -- one of the ones who are flailing in '21 but hope to contend in '22 -- there are worse gambles to take.

Is it possible the Braves trade freeman
Steve Adams
3:22
I cannot see that happening.
Confused
3:23
Which Rockie will get the biggest trade return?
Steve Adams
3:24
It would be Marquez, but Bud Black said they already told the player himself he won't be traded. Hard to walk that back and then look at anyone in your clubhouse with a straight face (or any free agent you ever want to sign).

Story should get a bigger return than Gray, who'll get a bigger return than Cron.

Can you see any short term rentals that would help Toronto without costing them a top prospect?
Steve Adams
3:25
Sure. Most rentals won't cost a top prospect. Michael Pineda, Ian Kennedy, Raisel Iglesias, Jon Gray ... all these guys have value, but none are going to cost you Austin Martin or anything.
John Mozeliak
3:26
Do the cards go dumpster diving for guys like Jordan Lyles just to stay afloat (don't see any scenario of us making a run this year) or do we sell what we can (Kim?) and potentially make a big splash in the off-season with all of the bad contracts coming off the books? What scenario do you see playing out for the cardinals in the next 2-2.5 weeks?
