As for how it impacts the Reds ... they're separate markets. I suppose it's possible you'll have some teams waiting to make a final offer, knowing the Nats like one of the prospects they might otherwise surrender for Castillo, but as the deadline draws near, those situations will gain clarity. And if you have a chance to acquire Luis Castillo to bolster your playoff rotation, I don't think you hold off and miss that opportunity because maybe the Nats make a Soto splash, no.

Gallo to the Padres for Ray Kerr and Esteury Ruiz. Does that sound reasonable?
Steve Adams
11:45
Gallo to the Padres for cash or a PTBNL sounds more reasonable.

With another heavy SS market is there any chance Correa doesn't opt out and waits a year to cash in?
Steve Adams
11:47
There are two ways I can envision Correa passing on his opt-out:
1. He suffers a massive injury in the final week of the season or in the playoffs and knows he'll be out until July or something the following season.
2 The Twins extend him (which I don't expect)
Otherwise, he's opting out.

Would Tyler Naquin be a good acquisition to cover CF problems in Philly for the year. Would he come fairly cheap I suppose
Steve Adams
11:48
Naquin's a solid bat against righties and is an underrated asset that a team could pick up, but he can't hit lefties and is much better suited in a corner. I know the Phillies' options are limited, but he wouldn't be high on my list of everyday CF options

With all the Soto questions I'll angle my Mariners question differently. IF the Mariners trade top pitchers, out of Gilbert/Kirby/Hancock, who is the one who the Mariners shouldn't trade?
Steve Adams
11:49
Gilbert has overwhelmingly proved that he is a quality big league pitcher this year already (and last). He's far more untouchable than the other two, though I find Kirby's overall production so far and some of his secondary/underlying numbers really encouraging.

Soto winning the HRD, was his cherry on the top.  He now has WASH by the balls, and is forcing them to pay up to half a billion or trade him ASAP.   It's a win /win for Soto at this point .
Steve Adams
11:51
Again, I don't think they have to trade him ASAP. They could easily wait until the offseason to move him. And hell, maybe a new owner is willing to go beyond the 440 or shorten the deal to juice the AAV like Soto wants.

Winning the derby was a nice moment, but I don't think it forced the Nationals' hand in the manner you're describing.

I'm sure you're getting bombarded with Soto questions, but I have a legit one. For the Cards, even though it's not their style, does Jordan Walker, Matt Liberatore, Tyler O'Neill, Alec Burleson plus an A ball lottery ticket of their choosing get it done. This would essentially replace the major whole of the loss of Oscar Taveras that the Redbirds have been trying to plug for 6-7 yrs now.

11:52
Would Jack Flaherty, Tyler O’Neill, and Zach Thompson be a starting conversation for Soto?
Steve Adams
11:53
Yes, this chat is like 80% Soto questions, ha
On the Flaherty/O'Neill/Thompson thing, not a chance. Flaherty is hurt, O'Neill has the same amount of control as Soto. It's just not in the realm of plausibility.
11:55
Walker, on the other hand, is the type of legitimate headliner (well, co-headliner) the Nats would need, and Liberatore and Burleson are appealing names to add. I still think they'd need to add more marquee value, and I have to imagine the Nats would be more interested in Dylan Carlson and his 4 years of remaining control than O'Neill's remaining two
Angels
11:55
Minasian or arte to blame for Angels' struggles?
Steve Adams
11:56
It can be both, but the Angels are on like their fourth GM with the same type of problems they seem to have every year, and Moreno is the constant running through those teams -- not Perry.

Could Cole Irvin get traded? Feel like he should net a solid return unless teams think he’s benefiting from pitching in Oakland.  That start in Houston should be a strong point though.
Steve Adams
12:00
The home/road splits over the past two seasons -- especially in 2022 -- are pretty glaring, but I don't think that completely dries out interest. Most teams are going to view Irvin as a fourth/fifth starter who can soak up innings and keep them competitive in the regular season before shifting to a postseason bullpen role.

But, he has four years of club control remaining beyond 2022 and isn't even arb-eligible until the 2023-24 offseason. That'll drum up interest in him, for sure.

With 4+ years, the A's needing SOMEONE to pitch and other teams probably valuing him at a lesser rate than Oakland does, I don't think he's especially likely to go.

Do you think any underwater contracts get unloaded at the deadline?
Steve Adams
12:02
The Padres will move someone. I doubt they find a Hosmer taker, but moving the final half of Myers' final year maybe is more plausible. I don't know if Blake Snell counts as "underwater," because I think teams would love the opportunity to fix him (without giving up much in return), but he's another name.

I don't think you'll get Heyward, Strasburg, etc. jettisoned, but there are always a few deals designed just to shed some dollars and open some luxury room.
Dbacks
12:03
Are they are dark horse candidate for Castillo or Montas? Obviously they’re not making the playoffs this year, but they have a lot of good young position players
Steve Adams
12:04
I wouldn't say "never" in these instances, but it's rare for a team that has no viable path to the playoffs to acquire an expensive trade target like this when he only has one season of club control remaining beyond the current one. The D-backs would be acquiring Montas/Castillo knowing he doesn't move the needle this year, but they'd be beating out contenders who are offering substantially more than either pitcher would cost in the offseason, when only one season of remaining control was being auctioned off.
12:05
There aren't a ton of arms available who are controllable into 2024, but that type of scenario would be more appealing for the Diamondbacks.

12:05
Does a Thor acquisition make any sense for the Twins this month?
Steve Adams
12:05
Sure, but it makes sense for a lot of other teams, too.
12:06
Twins might make more financial sense than a few other potential suitors, as they're nowhere near the luxury threshold so all it costs them is actual dollars
(Plus prospects, but I was speaking purely of the financial side of things there)
Cubbie Blues
12:06
Please tell me why Heyward is still on the team?  Just taking playing time from others who should get a look.
Steve Adams
12:07
I would imagine stubborn hope that they can get someone to take a chunk of the contract in some creative scenario, but yeah, it's hard to really justify it. I'd have cut him by now and taken the loss.

Shouldn’t the Rays be a very viable landing spot for Castillo? He’s affordable even for them, they have lots of prospect depth, he’s a righty power pitcher who would be a weapon vs. the Yankees.
Steve Adams
12:08
I agree with all of that, yeah. But again, there are like 15 teams who'll want Castillo, Montas, Syndergaard, etc. etc. Basically every contender and pseudo-contender will need starting pitching, and the Rays probably feel more comfortable in their ability to find solutions in house than others.
12:09
(As they should -- look what they've done so far)
Roddy Z
12:11
Should the Astros acquire another bat, such as a 1B or  corner outfield type? Gurriel isn’t hitting much and Brantley might be out longer than most expect. Who might be a good fit?
Steve Adams
12:13
Yeah, I agree with my colleague Anthony Franco that 1B should be an area of focus, even with Yuli meaning so much to the org. Josh Bell, Garrett Cooper, Trey Mancini... I don't know that any one makes more sense than the other. At the end of the day it's just about deepening the lineup. I guess with Mancini or Cooper you'd feel a little better about their ability to kind of fake it in the OF (relative to Bell)
CJ Cron
12:13
There's rumor about me being floated around...
Steve Adams
12:14
I haven't seen anything on the Rockies moving Cron, but they absolutely should be open to it.

They won't, because that's not how the organization operates, but if you can get a legitimate return for a guy you signed to a minor league deal and extended for two years on what now looks like a steal.... good on you, Rox.

They seem steadfastly committed to the idea that they have the core of a contender in Denver, though.
12:15
I disagree, but I also love that they buck the trend and continue to go for it. Wish more teams would go this route and actually try rather than seemingly hunting for excuses to rebuild
