Some pretty intense hype for Jasson Dominguez in light of the signing today. What does his trajectory look like once he starts getting into games next year?
Steve Adams
3:43
There was also intense hype for Kevin Maitan. Meanwhile, Jose Altuve got a $15K bonus when he signed as a free agent.

International free agency is even more of a crapshoot than the draft. I think it's a mistake to hype these kids up so much since they're so volatile and unpredictable.

Do you think it's possible the Cubs pick up Quintana's option and trade him? Resigning Hamels seems like the better bet if Alzolay is going to stick around the rotation as the number 5 guy.
Steve Adams
3:44
I'd think they would love to keep all three. It's not like anyone gets through a season with five starters, and Alzolay still hasn't solidified himself in the Majors or anything.

Nats buying? From who?
Steve Adams
3:46
Whoever has bullpen help available. Dodgers, Blue Jays, Tigers. At this point I do expect the Nats to try to add some pieces. As mentioned with regard to the Pirates, though, an awful month would change that.

Why do teams wait  till deadline to trade when trading now could make the difference  in outcome?
Steve Adams
3:49
Because making a trade right now would likely require meeting a larger asking price. If you're a seller and know that in three weeks there will be 4-5 more teams interested in your player, you can set the bar high right now. Sure it's a double-edged sword because there could be more sellers and a greater supply down the road as well, but it's hard to make a move when you don't even know the full context of the market.

Florial seemed untouchable in trade talks over the last few years. With the Yanks signing Dominguez, does Florial become trade bait?
Steve Adams
3:50
The two are nearly six years apart in age. Signing a 16-year-old has no bearing on the Yankees' willingness to trade Florial. The fact that he's having a miserable season in Tampa could, though.

Tanner Roark for Hunter Renfroe. Does this trade work or what needs to be done to fix it?
Steve Adams
3:50
Zero reason for the Padres to give up four years of Renfroe for 2 months of Roark

how much action will the Mets have this July?  Vargas,Frazier,Wheeler, Ramos, which is most likely to be moved

How are some guys able to consistently outperform their FIPs? I.e. Cole Hamels and Teheran
Steve Adams
3:55
Hamels hasn't outperformed his by THAT much, but he does consistently have an above-average strand rate. On a year-over-year basis that could be just noise, but when you're looking at a sample as large as his career, there's probably some degree of skill involved in that.

Teheran and a lot of fly-ball pitchers manage to outperform their FIPs in part because fly-balls in play are easier to convert into outs than grounders. FIP is expecting their BABIP to regress toward the league average, but fly-ball pitchers tend to have lower BABIPs in general. Teheran has career .268 mark, for instance.

Is Lucas Giolito a legit ace going forward?
Steve Adams

I'm buying the breakout.

Do you see Oakland making any moves this month? Their offense is top of the line, but they lack in pitching, in particular starters (with Montas out). There should be some good rentals they can grab, and let their young injured SPs heal up and start slow.
Steve Adams
3:56
I think they should and will be in the market for rotation help.

Any chance the Mets might trade "High" on Dominic Smith to an AL team in need of a LH bat and IB, like the White Sox?
Steve Adams
3:58
I could see that panning out, yeah. There's no way he's taking 1B from Alonso at this point. If he can convince the team he's a passable left fielder, maybe they'd keep both, but yeah flipping Smith to any team in need of a 1B (or DH) in exchange for a near-MLB asset makes some sense for the Mets.

What kind of contract will Gerrit Cole end up signing this coming offseason?
Steve Adams
4:01
He and Boras will go out looking for $200MM+, which isn't impossible to rule out even with the depressed FA prices. I'd call something like 6/180 more likely, though.
He'll be the same age Patrick Corbin was this past offseason when he got 6/140, and Cole is better (meant more as a compliment to Cole than a knock on Corbin -- both are very good)

Ian Kennedy to the Dodgers make sense?
Steve Adams
4:02
Any reliever to the Dodgers makes some degree of sense. Royals would need to pay down some of Kennedy's remaining contract. ($16MM this year and next)
no no no no
4:03
Also Alonso is already gone, I believe you meant Abreu.
Steve Adams
4:04
I was saying Dom Smith isn't taking 1B from Pete Alonso in NY

4:06
Mitch Keller, Will Craig & 1 more interesting piece for Thor, who hangs up
Steve Adams
4:06
Mitch Keller is basically MLB-ready right now, so I don't think Huntington (Pirates GM) would build a deal around him. Particularly not when Noah has been hurt and hasn't pitched all that well.
4:07
Will Craig is a tough fit for the Mets, too, since he's basically 1B only and they've got Alonso

Is Jessie Chavez a fit for the Dodgers?

How important are Boyd's starts from here to the deadline?  short of injury would anyone be swayed one way or the other?
Steve Adams
4:11
It depends on the manner of his struggles. He's been hurt by homers lately, but being semi-prone to homers has always been something people thought Boyd would struggle with. If he keeps racking up K's with minuscule walk totals, I don't think it'd hurt him much even if he continues to serve up some dingers.

If he suddenly starts walking/plunking guys in bunches and only strikes out 20 guys in 30 innings between now and July 31, that'd be more concerning

After Gerrit Cole, how would you rank next year's FA starting pitchers?
Steve Adams
4:13
More tightly bunched, but probably would go Bumgarner next up in terms of earning power, followed by Wheeler/Odorizzi (who should be close)
Astros just designated AJ Reed for assignment. Sometimes hanging onto all your prospects doesn't work.

Ok, I have to finish this up for the week. Thanks for chatting everyone. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve. Jeff will chat on Thursday afternoon. Have a good week!
