Greetings all -- not a bonkers night here or anything. If only there was something to talk about.

do you think that the marlins have interest in Joey Bart?
Steve Adams
7:22
They absolutely do. Long-term help at catcher is a focal point for them at the deadline.

Please help this M's fan understand what we're doing here...
Steve Adams

I mean, I understand the part that sucks -- specifically the timing. Last night's win was huge, and you just took three of four from the A's, too. Momentum is trending up and this crashes it back down.

At the same time, from a total distance -- trading two months of Graveman, as good as he's been, for 4.5 years of Toro is huge. If the Mariners weren't contending at all, this move would be portrayed in a completely different light.

That doesn't lessen the sting, and it's brutal to hear that Graveman is doing his post-trade presser fighting back tears. But from a pure perspective of looking at the long-term value here, it's easy to like for the Mariners.
7:26
I say this as someone who's been a Toro believer for awhile, mind you.
7:27
I would imagine, too, that additional bullpen help is on the way for the M's in the coming days. But it's still brutal for fans and the clubhouse to look at things in such calculated fashion and try to separate from the human aspect of it all. How could you not have become attached to Graveman with how well he's pitched? I get it. It's hard.

Is Trea Turner to the M's realistic, or just wishful thinking? Do you think the M's will require a contract extension from Turner as part of the deal?
Steve Adams
7:28
Turner was pulled because he tested positive for Covid-19. I wouldn't assume he's being traded anywhere at this point.

Haven't heard anything at all about Boston, aside from Bloom saying they are building for the long run too. Are they willing to pay asking prices for big additions?
Steve Adams
7:30
They're one of the teams Jayson Stark tied to Scherzer a bit ago (that'll be up on the site momentarily -- would already have been were it not for the Graveman deal). I don't really see it, because they've worked so hard to get under the tax line though. More generally, I'd expect Chaim Bloom, Brian O'Halloran, etc. to look more for moves like the one Houston just made -- the type of deal that's hard to see coming, focuses on less-than-expected trade candidates with eminently reasonable price tags, etc.

I don't think they're just going to say "We got Kimbrel and Scherzer let's effin' go."

Can Michael Chavis for Anthony Rizzo get it done?
Steve Adams
7:31
I'd want a better return for Rizzo.
Who's on First
7:31
Is it wish full thinking or could the Padres actually move Eric Hosmer
Steve Adams
7:32
Can it be both? There's no contract in baseball that's entirely untradeable if you add enough around it and eat enough of the money. I wouldn't expect it, but is there something like a 5-10% chance? Sure.

Gore/Abrams/Hassel for Soto?
Steve Adams
7:33
I believe the reports that say the Nats are open to trading anyone but Soto. That'd make them think though, haha. Although Gore's stock is down a good bit from its peak by now.

Give me the framework of an offer the Indians accept for Jose
Steve Adams
7:35
I can't see any plausible scenario where the Indians deal Ramirez between now and Friday. I mean, sure you could pick a team and say, "OK if the Mariners sent them Kelenic, Julio Rodriguez, Logan Gilbert, Ty France, etc. etc." sure -- but I think the asking price on Ramirez would be beyond the scope of what any team would reasonably pay to acquire him.
Craig Kimbrel
7:36
Am I bringing back an Aroldis Chapman type return? 0.49 ERA 😏
Steve Adams
7:38
Broadly speaking, the Chapman return will go down as an outlier. Maybe we see another trade or two like it over the next 10 years, but the vast majority will be for much lesser returns. If you're hoping Kimbrel brings the Cubs CJ Abrams from San Diego or something, I think you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Scherzer apparently prefers to be on the west coast and LA, SD, and SF could all use him. Who wins the bidding war between the 3?
Steve Adams
7:39
Sounds like he more prefers to be with a team that has a good chance to win now and could extend him. The Giants are the best fit of that trio, for me. (Blue Jays work nicely, too.)

Love the Chafin pick up, but don’t I need to do more?
Steve Adams
7:39
Yeah, but there's still 2+ days for the A's to make further additions.
Chafin won't be their only one.

7:40
Any chance that the Angels end up swinging a major deal for a starting pitcher who is controllable beyond this year?  A German Marquez or someone like that?
Steve Adams
7:40
Rockies won't trade Marquez, but to your bigger-picture question, I can see them trying something like that, yes. And they have the outfield talent to use a Jo Adell or Brandon Marsh as a pretty interesting centerpiece. (Doesn't have to be one of them, just using them as an example)
Dylan
7:40
Do the Rockies actually keep Story or Gray?
Steve Adams
7:41
Gray seems like a lock to go. Story, I can see, because he's not hitting well, the SS demand isn't huge (at least not among teams who could plausibly take on his salary), etc. I think it's likelier he's moved, but I don't think the whole "they COULD keep him thing" is complete smoke.
Bad contravts
7:42
All I see are bad long term contracts. The Padres apparently want to dump hosmer. Has there been a mega contract that actually gave the team equal performance value? And don't tell my Harper.
Steve Adams
7:42
We were just talking about Max Scherzer, right?
(Also, yeah, Harper and Machado deals are fine -- so far)
7:43
The Hosmer contract looked ridiculous the moment he signed it, though. I don't think that's always the case.
Hawk Harrelson
7:43
Do you really think that the White Sox  are going to sit on their hands and not pick up anyone by trade deadline ?
Steve Adams
7:44
I don't think that at all. I fully expect them to get a bullpen arm of note, and think they're a good fit for a number of infield targets out there.

Adolfo and Stiever for Kimbrel
Steve Adams
7:44
I know I said Kimbrel isn't bringing back a Chapman haul, but he should bring a lot more than that.

7:45
The chances of the Padres moving Hosmer is about the same as dumping my bad contract with Heyward
Steve Adams
7:45
Eh, the Hosmer contract isn't as bad. It was front-loaded, so he's "only" earning $13MM per year the final three seasons.
