Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams 7/5/22

Swanson has been an absolute monster out of the 'pen. The Mariners also control him through 2025, so there's no reason for them to trade him, even if they make a tough call about the 2022 season and move some shorter-term guys.

Is it time to put the All-Star game out of its misery?  At this stage, it's pretty much the Pro Bowl, despite MLB's attempts to give it some meaning.
Steve Adams
12:47
It makes them money. That's all MLB cares about with regard to the ASG.

If Montas makes his next scheduled GS and the stuff is showing normal does his trade value fully rebound?
Steve Adams
12:48
Might have some teams who are a little more wary after one solid rebound start, but if he looks good for the next two, three, four starts (however long they hold off on a deal), I imagine that trepidation will begin to fade.

Maybe if you didn't type out paragraphs for every answer , we could get more questions in, you inefficient dolt

There is no way the Pirates are trading Reynolds if they are serious about contending in 2024. They can't both trade Reynolds and contend in 2024, right? Maybe the same is true for the Orioles and Mullins? If they trade these guys, they are throwing away the build/rebuild. I don't see it. These guys could be Altuve pieces for future contenders.
Steve Adams
12:52
That also presumes both teams are able to extend those guys, and their window to extend them for the cheap Altuve type of extension (at least Altuve's first one) have already sailed.

You could just as easily argue that trading a Reynolds or Mullins right now would next them MLB-ready help that'd be controllable through the 2029 season -- potentially multiple pieces. It all depends on the return. It's foolhardy to firmly say "There's no way we'd move Bryan Reynolds, so don't bother making an offer." That's why pretty much all front offices are at least open to listening on any one player.

Do I opt-out at years end? What estimated figures would I be offered?
Steve Adams
12:56
Depends when he returns from the IL and how he looks upon doing so. I'm generally wary that he'll keep up the numbers he'd been posting,, as the walk rate was sky-high and the swinging-strike rate/chase rates don't really align with his 31% strikeout rate.

But, if he returns and continues to punch out nearly a third of his hitters while bringing his walk rate under 10%, yeah -- why not opt out and see if there's better than a year and $5.5MM out there? Worst case scenario is probably you come out a million or so behind, whereas the upside is far, far greater.

Why do teams wait until the day of the deadline to finally make moves. I enjoy it but like, the Cardinals should've traded for a starter by now...
Steve Adams
12:59
Most teams want to have as much information as possible so they're not sacrificing long-term value to improve and then, four weeks down the road, selling for less than they gave up in the first place. Today's front offices are pretty patient and process-driven, and they're not going to react to a string of bad bullpen performances or a couple of untimely but minor injuries.

Conversely, if you're selling, you want as many bidders as possible, and oftentimes teams don't make up their mind to really get aggressive in their efforts to add until the deadline arrives

come the all-star break, how far back in the wild card do the Giants need to be to consider selling? 6 GB? I imagine Rodon would be a pretty hot commodity. Joc too

I doubt the Giants will make any calls like that even by the All-Star break. More like 3-4 days before the deadline.

White Sox sellers?
Steve Adams
1:01
They'd need to be buried a lot further than 5.5 games in the division.
