Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams 8/11/21
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams
2:09
Another chat has begun.
2:10
Huzzah
That sounded sarcastic and was not intended to be, ha -- let's get rolling!
YankeeChris
2:10
Do you think the Yankees sign Anthony Rizzo long term?
Steve Adams
2:11
I don't think that's their top priority; I'd anticipate more that they pursue a shortstop, move Gleyber to 2B and play DJ at first base with more regularity.
PTBNL
2:11
Will the Tigers actually spend in free agency this offseason?
Steve Adams
2:14
It'd be pretty foolish for their owner to come out and hint at it but not do it. You open yourself up to quite a bit of backlash if you just sign a couple one-year relievers.

That said, Ilitch just said they might pursue "high-impact" players, which is a relative term. They could sign, I don't know, Mark Canha and Brandon Crawford or something, and say "these are high-impact guys for us"

Doesn't mean they're going to sign Corey Seager and bring Scherzer back to Detrout.
Detroit, even. Typing is hard.

What team do you think is poised to have the most interesting offseason (surprise signings, crazy trades, etc.)?
Steve Adams
2:18
Depends what type of crazy you mean. I think the A's are going to have to trade away some pretty big names because their arb class is so enormous and full of fairly high-profile names entering their final year (Olson, Chapman, Manaea, Bassitt). The Giants have a clean payroll outlook and want to win. Ditto the Blue Jays. Yankees/Red Sox will be active since they dipped back under the luxury tax. Tigers could throw some cash around.
Dennis
2:18
How do you think Vandy will handle what happened with Rocker? Will they cool off how much they use their top arms?
Steve Adams
2:19
Rocker is far from the first and will be far from the last pitcher to be used aggressively by a college or high school program.
Tyler
2:19
What do they Royals have to do in free agency to actually be competitive next year?
Steve Adams
2:20
Add some more pitching and some outfield help, I suppose, but a lot of the growth is going to have to come internally. They need Lynch, Kowar, Singer, Bubic, Mondesi, Dozier to start playing like the core guys the club has envisioned. Witt should be up in 2022, which will obviously help.
Doug
2:22
In the offseason would Hancock, Deloach, Then & Dunn net the Mariners German Marquez?
Steve Adams
2:23
I think most clubs would seriously entertain that for Marquez, in the Rockies' situation.

Of course, we're talking about the Rockies, so the realistic scenario is that they open the offseason by proclaiming themselves 2022 contenders and saying that Marquez is off limits so don't bother asking.
I don't think they'll trade him, because I think Dick Monfort somehow, against all odds, believes the Rockies are close to contending.

2:24
What are some of the albatross contracts that could be moved this offseason?
Steve Adams
2:26
I don't know that these all qualify as albatrosses (some do), but among the first names to come to mind: Eric Hosmer, Wil Myers, Patrick Corbin, Jason Heyward, Aaron Hicks, Justin Upton, Nick Ahmed

2:26
Is kimbrel a HOFer?
Steve Adams
2:27
When it's all said and done, I imagine he has a good chance of getting there, yeah.
Baseball fan
2:28
Do you see Javy Baez in a Cubs uniform again next season, or Mets keep him? Or another team?
Steve Adams
2:30
I doubt he goes back to the Cubs. Mets could keep him, but generally speaking it's wiser to take the field than one specific team. A lot of clubs are going to be looking for shortstop help: Yankees, Giants, Reds, Twins, Astros, Tigers, etc.
Wednesday
2:30
You know know it’s not Tuesday correct…HA
Steve Adams
2:31
Ha, I do! But I wasn't working yesterday morning/afternoon (hence Polishuk being on the site all day), so this week's chat falls on a Wednesday

2:31
Realistically (not the sugar coated version) when can the Orioles contend?
Steve Adams
2:31
2023 at the earliest but I'd bet more on 2024.
Adam Steves
2:32
How can Jason Heyward seriously be moved without giving up a first round pick and paying the entirety of the albatross salary?
Steve Adams
2:32
You can't trade picks (although maybe in the new CBA!)

You swap him for another bad contract, is the most likely answer.
Reds Chances
2:33
what % would you give Reds at making playoffs ? Do you think Nick C opts out or is he a Red next year ?
Steve Adams
2:34
FanGraphs has their chances at about 22%, which feels fine -- maybe a little light given the weak schedule, but they're 4.5 games back of a pair of very good NL West contenders and have some surging NL East clubs to contend with as well over in Philly and ATL.
2:35
I'd be shocked if Castellanos didn't opt out.
Pirate Fan in Misery
2:35
Is there really anything to be excited for as a Pirate fan?  Seems like there is no winning in the horizon.
Steve Adams
2:36
Ke'Bryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds are good, and the farm system is getting a lot better. But if you're looking for just immediate help in the win-loss column and/or a return to contending in the NL Central in the next year or two, then it's pretty bleak.
Allen
2:36
I’ll bet you 100 bucks giants win the west
Steve Adams
2:37
They have MLB's best record and a four-game lead with 49 games to play. I wouldn't take the bet since they're the odds-on favorite to win right now!
Rox apologist
2:38
I get that the Rockies have made a lot of stupid FA moves, and "94-win Dick" Monfort may well be high on something, but is the Rox trying to be contenders that much more outlandish than, say, the Royals or Tigers? Colorado has payroll flexibility, some very good controllable pieces (Marquez, Rodgers, McMahon), and some others apparently amenable to staying (Gray, Cron). Couldn't they add some under-the-radar FAs in the offseason (Chris Taylor or similar) and try to contend?
Steve Adams
2:39
The Royals and Tigers aren't looking up at three of the game's best teams ahead of them in the division. And the TIgers' farm system is stacked, plus they've spent upwards of $200MM on payroll in the past.
Re: Nats
2:40
What do you think Semien's market looks like this winter?
Steve Adams
2:41
There are 6-10 teams that could reasonably spend at shortstop, and Semien has positioned himself as one of the best of the bunch. I think he'll top $100MM over a five-year term by a good bit.
