It's a massive haul and yet another reminder that other clubs don't really give a crap about a pitcher's ERA when trading for him. Quintana in 2017 and Archer in 2018... cheap control is enormously valuable
Jays
3:37
Got junk for Happ. Trading top talent not great move.
Steve Adams
3:39
The only people I know who think the Jays "got junk" for Happ are bitter Jays fans that have been calling for the heads of Atkins and Shapiro since they were hired. I loved that they pulled 4 years of Drury for 2 months of Happ.
3:40
On a related note: Curtis Granderson cleared revocable waivers -- add him to the top of the Aug. trade candidate rankings accordingly.
We all keep personalized trade rankings right? Right.
DiPoto
3:40
Please tell me Erasmo is not my solution for the rotation
Steve Adams
3:41
Short-term, it seems that way. But it's Jerry Dipoto -- he's not going to sit back for two and a half weeks and assume things are good. He'll be trying to make something happen on the trade market.

Any chance Choo is traded before the deadline?
Steve Adams
3:41
I don't see anyone wanting anything to do with that contract unless the Rangers pay it down to something like $5MM/yr

Odds Jose Abreu gets dealt before September 1?
Steve Adams
3:44
Minimal. I always hate putting "odds" or "percentages" on these things because there's no real way to do so. Placing "odds" on where someone is going to sign is beyond gimmicky and nonsensical to me. I'd be extremely surprised if he's moved -- if you want to call that under 10%, we can go with that I suppose.

He hit poorly in June and July, White Sox have been reluctant to move him in the past, there's a limited market for 1B/DH, etc.
Troy
3:44
Has Mike Shildt done enough to keep the gig?
Steve Adams
3:45
Feel like they're going to overhaul things pretty substantially
Andrew McCutchen
3:45
Steve, will I be traded within the next 10 days, or will I stay in SF.
Steve Adams
3:46
The Giants' front office has continually said it has no plans to sell, yet rumors regarding Bumgarner persisted until the deadline and now McCutchen talk is continuing into August. Short of a 15-game losing streak, I don't think the Giants will move any notable veterans.
Archer Deal
3:46
Why were Pirates so aggressive in adding to a team that is barely in the race?
Steve Adams
3:46
Deal was as much about 2019 and beyond as it was 2018

How about a compromise for the shift. Each team gets 3. Makes it a real strategy and opens door wider for second guessing. Thoughts?
Steve Adams
3:49
Limiting the shift is nonsense to me. There's no designated rules about where a player is supposed to stand. The whole concept of "first baseman," "second baseman," "shortstop," "right fielder" etc. was trying to evenly distribute players to make the ball less likely to fall in for a hit. We have better data to help that now -- of course teams are going to use it. Shifts have been prevalent for years. Ted Williams was shifted seven decades ago. Pulling the infield in, playing a no-doubles defense late in games -- all examples of shifts.

Does Moose return to the Brewers next year?
Steve Adams
3:50
I didn't think he was a good fit there this year and doubt he'll be viewed as one next season. I think he'll sign somewhere with a more clear need at 3B. Shaw to 2B seems like a bandaid solution.
Natitude
3:51
How do the Nats look long term? Will they compete with ATL and PHI over the next several years even without Harper?
Steve Adams
3:52
I certainly expect them to. Soto looks like a budding monster, and they have Robles ready to step into the outfield next season. Still have Scherzer and Strasburg locked up, and while Stras is injury prone he's a huge value when healthy. Turner is a star, Rendon is around for another season, and once their current stars begin to leave (Rendon, Harper, etc.) they'll have more resources to address the holes created.
The Cash Man
3:52
Given my affinity for pitchers who started here and moved (Robertson, Kahnle, Kontos), any chance we're going after Andrew Miller this offseason?
Steve Adams
3:53
Miller didn't start in NY, and I don't think the fact that the Yankees wound up with Kontos as a filler option has anything to do with his origins in the Yankee organization (nor did the additions of Robertson and Kahnle last year).

I can see the Yankees pursuing Miller, sure, but it's because he's a talented arm and a possible buzzsaw at the back of that 'pen -- not because he's a former Yankee.
Guy Jackson
3:55
Will Hader ever get a chance to start?
Steve Adams
3:56
Perhaps, but you can't expect him to carry over this type of dominance into the rotation. Working in longer stints and facing hitters two, three times per outing will invariably diminish his results. Plus, there were plenty of questions about his ability to start dating back to his prospect days. I'd say keep him where he is, but the organization may be too tempted to see if he can sustain 80% of this in a rotation role.

I am so sick and tired of people moaning, groaning, and complaining about the shift. If guys can't go to the opposite field, that is their fault.
Steve Adams
3:59
I don't agree with that. "Going to the opposite field" and "just dropping a bunt down the 3B line!" were easier things to do when every pitcher in the game wasn't throwing 97 with an above-average or plus breaking pitch. Teams are more conscious of pitching to hitters' weaknesses now, as well.

The game is going to change, though. That's always been true. And people will always find something to hate about the new philosophies because they don't mesh with their own nostalgic preferences of what baseball "should" be. That, too, will always be true.

Will we get anything in a trade for Valencia?
Steve Adams
3:59
Could snag some low-level warm body but it wouldn't be much. I'm sure they shopped him around leading up to July 31.
Matt Carpenter
4:01
Do I win the MVP if my team makes the playoffs?
Steve Adams
4:02
Doubt it. He'll get votes, but a marginal lead in WAR (which would require a huge finish) might not be enough for voters to overlook how terrible he was early in the season. Guys like Arenado and Freeman have been more consistent, while pitchers like Scherzer and deGrom will get some attention even if their teams don't make the postseason.

Yates and Stammen to Dodgers for Verdugo and a minor league pitcher?
Steve Adams
4:04
None of those players would clear waivers. Padres would be able to claim Verdugo based on their record, but Yates and Stammen aren't getting to the Dodgers
Plus, Dodgers just wouldn't give Verdugo for Yates and Stammen
Ed McWilliams
4:04
I think "the MVP has to be on a playoff team" is stupid. Should just be whomever the best player is
Steve Adams
4:07
Agreed wholeheartedly. The whole notion of twisting the meaning of "value" is preposterous. If you were going to have a draft to build a best-possible roster at the end of the season based on the 2018 results and told the person drafting first, "Here are the seasons everyone had. Who would you take?"

They're going to take the best player. Period. Not the "best guy on a team who reached October." And they're going to take that best player because he's the most valuable.

Does Bieber have the stuff to be an ace?
Steve Adams
4:07
Don't think so. More premium control than premium stuff, but he looks like a nice mid-rotation piece.
